Tucked into a middle-class neighborhood by some apartments and a day-care center, one arrives at the camp. Excellent and comprehensive audio guide but also everything is in English. I have been teaching the war for over two decades, but I did not know about the experiences of Italian POWs. As always, there is so much documentation, that one cannot absorb it all at once, but the information is grim while also engaging. Definitely worth the effort to visit; turn onto the road directly across from...Burger King.

I don't think a visit to Berlin would be complete without going to the Documentation Centre. Allow a minimum of two hours or more to get through all the history of how Hitler came to power and the consequences of it all. Can be overwhelming so don't listen to everything on the headset or you will not get through the centre.

The History of Italian Military Interneesd 1943-1945. This is a Documentation Centre on Nazi Forced Labour. Nazi Germany and Facist Italy were initially allies in World War 11 but when they withdrew as allies about 650,000 Italian sldiers were taken as prisoners and not given a very good time and about 50,000 died as they were forced to work under harsh conditions and life of hunger, illness and violence. It is free and no admission charges.

This museum is so informative, I learned a lot of things that I was never told about the war. A lot of personal experiences are shared, in a very open and honest way. I spent two afternoons there.

an excellent FREE museum based in old buildings for forced labourers during the nazi reign. lots of info. (so a fair bit of time required) with free headsets and easilly numbered to use. there were hundreds and hundreds of these forced labour blocks around Berlin but this is the last left in good order. the headset tour even takes you out side the fenced in area to a few other near by locations - i recommend this if this sort of history is your cup of tea. This is a side wich is only interesting if you are also interested in one of the darker chapters off German history. I found it a very interesting side to visit. The way off exhibition takes you trough the way the people lived here. Also the interviews with survivors brings in a very big extra element to understand how the live went in a german work camp. Also the stories over the life after brought a extra light on the subject . It not a nice story but a honest told one.

Thank you very much, for your review and most of all for your visit here at the museum. You are right, it's not a nice story we tell, but we believe that the story has to be told to be not forgotten.

So the subject matter can't be described as fabulous, but the way it is presented is fantastic, one of the best museums I have been to. It is certainly a museum to go to, to get an impression of how Berliners were acting like through during the war and the atrocities committed by "ordinary" Germans on fellow europeans...some of the Germans are still alive today. Some are still making money from those terrible organisations. Also the museum is free, with brilliant language audio guide!

This museum and documentation center is a former forced labour camp from the 1940s. It's hosted in the barracks used to lodge the prisoners, which adds to the experience of understanding how it felt to be a part of this evil experiment. There are a few exhbitions with different topics, that are interactive, modern and done in an interesting way. Make sure to take an audioguide, which immensely adds to the experience. It takes you through all exhibitions within the camp and also on a short tour around it, including the description of the surroundings of the camp and its impact on the type of labour done by the prisoners. The visit including the audioguide is free of charge.

In a residential area, easily found from S Bahn. Spent an interesting time going around the huts. Look out for cards in hotel.

I visited here on Christmas Day. It was easy to find, about a 10 minute walk from the S bahn station and the walk was well signposted.
The man working that day was really helpful, informative and friendly.
The exhibitions were in English as well as German and there was also a free audio guide. The exhibitions were multi media and I found the personal experiences of people interesting. I really enjoyed visiting here and found it an interesting place to visit. English books are also available to buy.
I would definitely recommend visiting here and I will visit again when I return to Berlin.

Hi all, how long would you recommend for a visit for someone who likes to see everything and listen to all the audioguide material for all locations (all the barracks and also outside)?
Dokumentationszentrum NS-Zwangarbeit
Berlin, Jerman
Hello Craig, If you'd really listened to all the material and take the longer neighbourhood round, we'd recommend at least three hours. Guests usually need about one and a half our in the the exhibition.
Please take in mind, that the "Barrack 13" is not open for visits. Depending on when you plan your visit, it could be an idea to connect to a publich guided tour, which is going inside the 13. These tours are every first and third Sunday a month, at 3 p.m. Nevertheless, just ask our staff at the exhibition. Sometimes, we can find other solutions.
Have a safe trip, Juliane

Hello, I'm hoping you have information about my father Nicholas Johannas Wittenberg from Amsterdam who worked in Berlin camps from 1942 -1945. I am aware of records of his time in Berlin but the details I don't know. I wonder if you have his records and if you could tell me which camps he was assigned to and whether any work history documents exist. I wish to write about his story, I would like to visit too.
Thank you

Dear Mr. Wittenberg,
There are unfortunately no simple files of people being forced laborers in Berlin. We suggest to get first in touch with the archive of the International Tracing Services Bad Arolsen which you easily could do online (we are not able to put links in here)
They will most likely know, where your father had to work and live in Berlin. As a dutch man it might be, he was not living in a camp as western Europeans were allowed to live in private homes as well. We then will be able to tell you more about the circumstances he had to live in if we know the company and place of living. Unfortunately it is very complicated for relatives and us to do research on forced laborers. What we also would suggest is, to get in touch with the NIOD in Amsterdam, they might be able to tell under which circumstances Nicholas had to go to Germany. We very much hope, you will find some answers and kindly ask to keep us informed.
With best regards,
the staff of the Nazi Forced Labor Documentation Centre

I am trying to plan my trip to Berlin and I will be short on time the day of my arrival and the 2nd day I have already picked out places to visit. I want to see all three of these places but I am going not going to be able to see all 3. Can someone give me some direction on what would be a must for history buff like myself.
