We visit the old pinakothek quite often, we switch between the new pinakothek and the modern one. This one is my personal favourite.

Must visit
Okt 2019
The Alte Pinakothek is a must-visit in Munich. Many Italian and Flemish artists are exhibited here and on Sunday the ticket costs only 1 Euro.
The neighborhood is plenty of bars and and parks where to chill.

Breathtaking
Jul 2020
My other half suggested we visit here for the day so the little one stayed in bed and we visited on our own. It's about a fifteen to twenty minute stroll from the train station. The museum is vast with artworks on two levels. I thin we paid about 14 Euros for the two of us and like with other museums we had to leave our bags in the lockers, for which there is a 1 Euro returnable deposit.

We started on the first floor by walking of a long steep flight of stairs. The artworks went from the fifteenth up to the eighteenth century and contained lots of Italian works as well as art by Rembrandt, Van Dyke and Rubens, who works were wide and varied. I think this is the largest Rubens collection outside his native country. There were also other items by Raphael and Breugel. the collection is vast and you need to take it all in as you walk round. The rooms have all the doors removed so you can just walk through, and each room has lots of central seating so lovers can sit and admire the stunning works as they move round.

After completing the upstairs we went to the cafe for a spot of lunch and had coffee and cake. I had Lavender cake and mum had a slice of lemon tart. The portions were substantial and cost about 15 Euros in total. All the tables in the cafe were respecting social distancing and the staff all has masks on, as did all the other staff on duty throughout the museum. After lunch we visited the smaller collection on the ground floor of eighteenth and nineteenth century works. this contained works by Monet, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, Gainsborough, Klimt, Rodin and an original of Van Gogh's Sunflowers. Each painting was priceless. I could have sat all day and admired this collection, beautiful is an understatement.

We were here for hours, the Rubens collection is magnificent on its own. Anyone with an interest in European art needs to visit this place. Entrance is cheap, the art is substantial and the collections are amazing. Tourists to Munich must not pass this up an opportunity to visit this place.

Wonderful collection

Impressive collection, from Boucher to Rembrandt. Rubens's Last Judgement alone worth the price of admission. Highly recommend getting a guided tour, especially if you have kids/teenagers with you. Like everywhere in Munich at the moment, masks are required inside.

Treated like an outlaw

All was well until a staff member approached my wife and pointed out the size of her purse (after being in the museum for a couple hours). I told him, in German, my wife does not speak German. He only spoke much louder in German causing other patrons to stare.
I'll have to try speaking louder when someone does not understand the language I am speaking.

Do take the Audio Guide. It helps explain each painting and each room as you step back into history. The paintings are stunning. Totally in awe of the talent 'way back then'. I closed the place!

Spectacular Collection
Jan 2020
The Alte Pinakothek contains an extensive collection of artwork from the 15th through 18th Centuries. features many artists from Germany and the Low Countries, including Rubens, Rembrandt, Durer, Bosch, Holbein, and other very well known painters.

As of January 2020, the Neue Pinakothek, which houses great 19th and 20th Century art, was closed for maintenance, so a selection of works from that Museum was also in the Alte. The great Impressionist and Post-Impressionists were well represented. After the Neue opens, I recommend that you go there as well.

All in all, a world-class Museum.

Beautiful art to some extent overwhelming
Jan 2020 • Keluarga
A fascinating and very large collection of paintings from around 14C to 19C. Multitude of masterpieces and you can spend hours there. The challenge is that it is a real large collection, so there are just so many paintings of the same motif and after a while I lost the appetite for paintings of Madonna and child and Christ on the cross, let alone the dosens of paintings by Rubens (has he really painted all these + the hundreds you find by him in other museums around the world??). Go for the good stuff and in managed doses.

Why do people pose next to the paintings
Jan 2020
It never ceases to amaze me how many people look at the paintings of the great masters, instead of feeling the artist work. Just enjoy it and put the phone down.

An unprofessional and biased employees attack towards my family visit
Des 2019
The Alte Pinakothek (DIE PINAKOTHEKEN) itself and the staffs have disappointed me and my family deeply and unforgivably because:
- One of the most educational and prestigious art museum in Germany + the world didn’t have the most regular rules and conditions of informing visitors to step behind the border lines of artworks on the wall.
- Don’t have the border or signs to keep visitors away from paintings and artworks
- Unintentionally warned me and my sisters to step behind the artworks while other guests stood beside us were standing closely to them and discussing, admiring the works of arts.
- Staff warned us multiple times not to stand near towards the artwork because of alarm triggers but there were not a single sound had alarmed the securities.
- 3 staffs stood nearby the entrance hall (1st floor) did not have the service or the attitude of welcoming me and my sisters.
- Staff gave us stern and unwelcoming look to me and my sisters.
- We went back to the reception, one of the receptionists listened to our requests on filing a complaint and replied: “Sorry I don’t understand English.” And yet turned back to her colleague side and introduce new customers in English.
- The only person that was helpful was the security man on the ground floor.
- We went outside and posted our complaints on their Facebook page and community group (Alte Pinakothek), yet they deleted me and my sisters posts without our consent or approval online.
- Then, their museum manager privately messaged my sister not to file serious complaint due to his “calm holiday” season is coming and wishes us not to make a big scene online as their business and staff members will be severely damaged by our official complaints and reports online.

Sorry and not sorry, I do not tolerate rude, unprofessional on their own jobs and uneducated behavior of people existed right in front of my eyes at any time or seasons of the year. Especially this: your employee/ staff were HARASSING and ATTACKING my sisters and I while we’re enjoying the trip in your museum. Also, your reasoning on “sometimes employees are not having a good day” makes it worse, you’ve pushed your own words and professionalism into a lazy and trashy job, and to your own unprofessional “sometimes they’re not having a good day” employee! More importantly, I will not ever tolerate RACISM, DISRESPECTFUL or BIASED behavior of any people whom I’ve encountered.

We’re very disappointed and ashamed of you, ALTE PINAKOTHEK MUNICH!
SHAME ON YOU. Period.

***More details and receipts/ screenshots/ museum manager’s reply/ proofs of this incident (approved by my family) will be reposted below here and in Google Review, Facebook, Twitter and TripAdvisor.***
