Amazing architecture on quai de l'Ile near by the fish market.
Well curated, and great for photographers to discover the various angles to shot the staircase.

The house is build around a octogonal courtyard, allowing natural light through to all 5 floors from 2 directions. It was build in the 18th century, and is one of the few old houses to have survived the bombings of the 2nd world war. Some rooms still have the original plaster decorations, and are quite pretty. All rooms are pretty small. One is given a think book with information of the items on display, but since the book was written quite a few have found a different place and others have disappeared, so a bit frustrating to find information. The house is dedicated to living circumstances of a rich family in the 18th century, as well as shipping and trading. There is one room dedicated to slavery and the efforts by some Frenchmen to get it abolished.

This little museum is a true experience. A wonderful dip into the history of shipping, seagoing traders and architecture of the past. Not only the building is amazing, but also the decoration, furniture and the setting of family life in the old days. Really worth wil to visit if you like an hour of spending in a time capsule.

This five-story town house built around a central light shaft dates back to the late 18th century and is now a museum, retracing on a very realistic way the life of a family of merchants.

Decent museum. We were given an English guide to read on most of the artifacts. They are not in the order they are presented in the rooms so it can be hard to find them in the book. Truthfully, they’re not that interesting anyway. I don’t believe any of them are original. The only reason I’d go to the museum is to see the architecture. It’s a very unique polygonal design with a large central open air skylight flooding all of the floors in light from within. The room layouts on the floors make it easy to understand that the family that built this house was wealthy and influential in Le Havre. If you’re interested in architecture, I’d recommend this museum. Otherwise it may be slightly frustrating to gain any insight into daily life of the inhabitants and the artifacts aren’t overly interesting.

Dear Sir, Every single item exhibited in our museum is an authentic period piece and so is the building of the "Maison de l’Armateur". The fact that our museum belongs to the Musée de France organization makes it impossible for us to present any objects that is not an original piece belonging to the same period as the overall exhibition. Therefore all the objects that you saw in our Maison de l’Armateur are all dated back between the 1600's and the beginning of the 1800's. The quality of their restauration and preservation could have lead you to believe otherwise but the whole exhibition is made of authentic and original pieces. I invite you to come back. Maybe this new information will change your mind!

This late 18th century house was designed by an architect for himself. It is centered on a tall octagonal light well topped by a skylight, flanked by intimate spaces and one stairwell leading to five floors. The museum is richly furnished with objects of the period, but the best attraction is really the building itself. The attendant at the desk asked my language and then presented me with a large volume of photos and captions of the rooms and objects covering the whole museum and its collection in English; an outstanding effort to accommodate foreign visitors. An unusual aspect of the collections is an emphasis on hot-air balloons, with objects relating to them or depicting them throughout, including a magnificent clock in the form of a hot-air balloon. Truly a worthwhile visit.

A very interesting five storeys mansion. The rooms are laid out around a central octogonal light-well. Nice furniture and a lot of objects concerning air balloons

This house barely survived the end of WWII but has a last been restored so that the shipowner's trade and life can be laid open to the modern public. But this comes only with the skill of the volunteer guide who lead us through the building, explaining with great skill and knowledge how the family had grown with trade then based with economic sanctions. Well worth a couple of hours and a repeat visit.

The Musée Maison d'Armateur is a wonderful place but doesn't yet really hit the bell sweetly. There is no doubt that this museum has been a long-term restoration of love by the city, although the restoration didn't really start until the 1990s. To be fair, it needs a real quick boost of cash to finish the restoration properly with a proper mini-auditorium, and a better quality labelling.
Currently, the house - almost unique in its construction - has been decorated and then filled with a picture of rather odd artefacts. Yet there is no real historical legitimacy to many of the objects and the lighting quality varies. The museum is trying to be all things to all people, and possibly failing.

There is the opportunity to tell many of Le Havre's histories, and to be honest we felt that Le Havre doesn't really appreciate its own history, its own special place in the story of Europe's maritime heritage. Spaces in this museum could easily begin over to telling more of these stories.

But even so, the Musée Maison d'Armateur (The Museum of the Shipowner's House) is a wonderful, special pace.
