Visited mainly as the final resting place of William the Conqueror, this abbey church is one of the finest examples of Norman Romanesque architecture in France. Its imposing footprint takes up most of the center of Caen, a city itself brimming with fine churches. The interior offers a unique example of Gothic flourishes superimposed on the old Norman structure, resulting in a soaring nave at once imposing and light. It's worth grabbing an in-house guidebook to fully appreciate the many touches not immediately visible.

This church, originally the mens' abbey, whereas the womens is located across town, is famously William the Conqueror's final resting place. Worth seeing the tomb inscription and the church itself. The church is attached to the Caen museum, so you enter through the building next door first, normally, pay a small fee then enter the church. You could technically enter the church for free from the exterior, but the museum allows you to see part of the interior courtyard, which was used as a shelter when Allied forces finally liberated Caen, it also shows the suffering of the locals and what they endured before and during liberation but how resilient they were/are.

A nice stop to see a major part of history.

The Saint Etienne Church rises within the Men Abbey in downtown Caen. Its striking two towers are visible from almost all over the city. Beware the entrance is on the opposite side of the towers.
The Church was consecrated in 1077, being a classic Romanesque Norman edifice housing the tomb of William the Conqueror. But, do not make the tomb your final stop inside - walk to the other end towards the towers, where a series of plaques describes the Church as a shelter during WWII air bombardment, when most of the inhabitants became homeless.

On our short stop-over in the city of Caen we had the opportunity to have a quick visit of this church who has a nice garde in front of it. Anyhow the Saint-Etienne church of Caen, who was formerly the abbey of the Men's – so not to be confused with the nearby Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church - was built after the conquest of England by William Normandy. Consecrated in the year 1077 by Archbishop Jean d'Ivry, the church of Saint-Etienne de Caen, which houses the tomb of William the Conqueror, has been classified as a historical monument since the year 1840.

We learned about this wonderful historic church after getting totally ripped off for 7 Euros on the terrible tour of Abbaye des Hommes. The church is large and majestic with soaring twin towers and many colorful stained glass windows. Inside the church is the tomb of William the Conqueror who conquered England in 1066. Outside the church are the colorful and spacious gardens of Abbaye des Hommes and are FREE, as is the church itself. Thus, skip the 7 Euro tour of the abbey and view the church and grounds for free.

It had been years since I had visited and I was glad I stopped in again. I was reminded of the significance and connection of this church to Caen’s history during the time of William the Conquerer as well as during WWII.

This is where you can find the tomb of William the Conquerer. Not a huge church. Worth visiting if there's time.

It is across the street from Abbey of Saint-Etienne also known as Abbaye aux Hommes. This church had been abandoned several times during the past centuries. Its condition does not allow it open to the public.
