Stunning stronghold

It's a complex of considerable size and with some spectacular builldings. It was built in the middle of the eleventh century by William the Conqueror. The Castle was transformed as far as its use is concerned: it first became a royal fortresse, afterwords a headquarters for conscripts. This prestigious past can be discovered from the restored ramparts overlooking the palace of the Dukes of Normandy and the remains of the keep; it is revealed in the visit to the monuments sheltered behind the walls. The stated keep was built under the aegis of Henri I, king of England, son of the said Williamn the Conqueror. It was a massive construction whose original interior isn't very well known. It's believed however that it consisted of three floors, the entrance being in the second one. At present, after the damages it endured during the French revolution, it has about just half the height it used to have. The Palaces of William the Conqueror was another of the buildings being part of the Caen Castle. It was an imposing building which consisted of a reception hall, private apartments and a chapel. Nowadays almost nothing of that splendor building remains. The rampart is a solid and robust construction. There are altogether in the Castle more than 500 metres of rampart, thus bordering an area of nearly 500 square meters. On that basis, it can be affirmed that the Caen fortress is one of the biggest in Europe. From the rampart one can contemplate a fabulous view over the Castle and over the city. La Salle de l'Échiquier (Hall of the Exchequer) was also built by order of Henry I at the beginning of the twelfth century. It's a very interesting building, particularly due to the fact that it's one of the lasts remnants of the civil romanesque style in Normandy. That hall is really a splendid building. It was used for solemn court sessions, banquets, law assizes and other ceremonial activities. Besides, the hall was also a place for service and accommodation for the lord's entourage and his guard. The church of St. George is a nice little temple in gothic style, it becoming flamboyant in some of the church elements. The stained-glass windows are very well designed, they being different from each other both as regards both their size and their ornate. The Caen Castle is thus a marvellous place to visit in Caen. Walking on its flat surface from one building to the other is a healthy, relaxing as well as cultural exercice. One can effectively observe very interesting works in that place and contemplate fantastic panorama views. That's why its visit is a must while in the mentioned city.

Much to be seen inside the fort with its ramparts, museum of fine arts, Normandie museum, and other sites. However, keep in mind it's undergoing major renovations and construction work right now so it's a big mess when it rains as the ground has been torn up there are rocks, gravel, dust, and mud everywhere.

My son wanted to see a real castle and this did not disappoint! Any true fan of medieval history will love this place. It was worth the day trip- especially when we added a lunch in the old part of town (just a couple of blocks away).

Great expectations, greatly disappointed! Inside the castle it is just one big building site with piles of rubble and dirt. Great view of the old town from the castle walls, otherwise not worrh the trouble to visit. Luckily entry is free!

Walking visit at Historic City Centrum of Caen, France. At middle of old towns there always churhs etc, but at Caen historical monuments & really old buildings like Chateau de Caen, from 1000's built according orders of famous William the Conqueror, then refurbished several times during several hundred of years,,, and after WW2, totally and remarkable re-buildings (after heavily bombed by allied forces). Today you can walk through but many museums and guided tours inside are payable. Near exists also 2 separate abbeys (boys - girls) for Hommes and Daimes,, massive buildings also.

This castle in the center of town is well worth the time to explore. If you are in the area for the World War 2 sights, this is a refreshing change of pace. Park in the garage underneath and walk the ramparts of this castle built by William the Conqueror. It's amazingly large and free to explore. There are a few explanatory plaques, but mostly you must use your imagination to see what an architectural feat it was to build such a place centuries ago. Views of the area from the top are good and there are also two art museums on site.

This large castle, built c. 1060 by William the Conqueror is located in the center of Caen and now-days serves as a museum. There is a massive gatehouse through which one enters the sprawling grounds, entry is free. Narrow walkways lead to the top of ramparts from which we enjoyed splendid view of the city.

This stunning castle was home to William the Conquerer, in our opinion a must visit when in Caen, entrance is free, which is a bonus, and on our day of visiting, it was also free day for the two museums within it walls, another bonus.

There is parking within the walls, however, to get a full appreciation, of this massive structure, entering through saint peters gate is the best.

We especially loved walking/climbing the ramparts.

Lots of castles in France, why bother to see this one, you say? Firstly, this is the castle of William the Conqueror, last successful invader of England. Secondly, records indicate construction started circa 1060, making it much older than most castles I've seen to date. Lastly, it is FREE to wander around and get up close to examine the construction and note how well preserved the remaining parts are. Enjoy the views of town while you're at it.
If you are not downtown, is easily accessible by tram.
