We enjoyed a long meandering walk through the 5th and 13th and stopped here for a rest to sit on the bench and talk a while. Notable because the Bievre used to flow here, the Gobbelins are close by, and Paris' first skyscraper (ugly!) sits next door. Nice neighborhood park

Nice park in an area that is located further south and therefore has fewer tourists. A lot of children playing, but also a garden for growing things, as well as an calmer area for strolling, relaxing and reading.

It is a very nice park to stroll in and especially good for those with children due to the playground area. I think it will also be a nice place to have picnics. I've been there twice and both times it was not crowded at all.

Roses are about to bloom in this neighborhood park! Lovely to enter down a staircase to this peaceful spot where there's something for everyone: sit in the sun or shade, read or people watch, bring the kids to the playground, or buy a snack. Big enough to get a view of a tree-lined path, but it feels cozy. Enjoy the calm!

Took an early morning stroll and discovered this park by chance. Quiet and well used by locals, it offers a tranquil space as well as an outdoor gym, children's play areas and spaces where Thai chi etc take place. A lovely little park and well worth the visit if you are close by.

The Square René Le Gall is a large park in the 13th arrondissement. Even though it is in a busy neighborhood, it is hidden from passersby on the well-traveled Avenue des Gobelins. I was staying in the neighborhood but had no idea this large green space existed close-by until a friend took me there. The square was once called the Jardin des Gobelins because in the 1600s it was a vegetable garden attached to the Gobelins Tapestry factory. In 1938, a neoclassical garden was designed by architect Jean-Charles Moreux, and it was renamed Square René Le Gall in memory of a 43-year-old councilman of the 13th arrondissement. He was shot and killed in March, 1942, by the Germans for his involvement with the French Resistance during WWII.

The original, classical garden design had four gazebos and a rose garden in a geometric pattern with an obelisk in the middle. At the time, it was the center of the square, but with ongoing expansion, the square is now eight acres in all and has a children’s playground and landscaping additions as recent as 2012. The garden is carefully tended, with manicured hedges and bushes, which give a formal feeling to this part of the square.

One of the square’s unusual features is a staircase entrance whose wall is decorated with stones and fossils sculpted in mosaic-like masks by Maurice Garnier. It is a very grandiose structure with stairs from the upper level down to the garden level. The whole garden is located on an underground river, La Bièvre, which eventually empties into the Seine River. The park’s location on a former riverbed may be the reason for the descent from street level. Not far from the staircase is a huge, very old chestnut tree, and in the background behind the rose garden is the skyscraper, le Tour Albert. I later found out that le Tour Albert was the first residential skyscraper in Paris, built between 1958 and 1960.

There are 4 entries to the square. The 2 entries nearest the Métro Les Gobelins are on rue Emile-Deslandres and rue Berbier-du-Mets, both entrances a surprisingly short walk from the métro by way of rue des Gobelins and then rue Gustave Geffroy. The main entrance is on rue Croulebarbe and another entry point is on rue des Cordelières, but the rose garden and stone staircase are nearest to the Gobelins métro. The park is open during the summer from 9:00AM - 9:00 PM. The hours are somewhat shortened during the rest of the year.

This is a charming park with both a classical garden and forest-like mature trees, so it suits different tastes. It is unlike any other Parisian park I’ve seen and is worth a visit to see its unique features if not to linger awhile and enjoy the scenery.
