A wonderful spice store in the Marais
Sep 2018
This store has a great variety of spices and is very friendly and organized. When we left the owner gave us each a bag of dried apples which were delicious.

Herbs, spices, and the best mix of olives you'll ever find
Okt 2016
This little place is a gem, and I always go at least once per trip. Great place for herbs, and the proprietors' mix or "melange" spice bags make wonderful gifts of layered spices for meat, fish, poultry, or salads. Foodies know this place -- the owners are a no-nonsense couple. It's a tight little spot, so not somewhere you want to be if your hands are full of parcels and shopping bags!

What a fantastic shop, everything you could possibly want in the way of spices, we bought dried peaches, ancienne sardines, curry paste and a few other things, yes some things were a little expensive but it wasn't too bad, enjoy the experience and take in the smells,it is fantastic.

Great pepper here
Jul 2016 • Sendiri
It is true: the prices, even over the course of a year, have augmented to make it really prohibitive. But, if you need good madagascar pepper, this is the one and only place to find it. Now it is 12 euros for a small sachet. Their other peppers are also expensive, but, sigh, they are good. You can easily rack up a ridiculously expensive trip here, so just be careful what you choose. You get most every spice you need -- or things like pancake mix and fresh empanadas. The couple that runs it knows quality goods, so take it all with a grain of salt...

Stupid prices, service variable, Quality OK,.
Apr 2016 • Pasangan
Walking by we noticed this shop that looked like a bit of a bazar come high end bulk barn, with admittedly good choice and quality of spices, nuts (roasted and fresh), dried and candied fruit (figs, pineapple). Narrow, deep shop with open bags showing attractive, colorful merchandise on either side. Eye catching, a bit exotic. The prices though, are stupidly high, and the service variable depending on who is serving: if it is Madame - service is good, if Monsieur - forget it!. I bought 125 grams of fresh pistachios, and 145 grams of roasted, salted cashews - price? €14 (about USD16). With prices like that the only possible value here is historical - but wait! Monsieur had a kiniption fit seeing a lady take a picture - no explanation, he left the shop in a huff and directed the Madame to serve the perpetrator. Touchy, touchy! Come for the throwback (contempt is complimentary), take a picture (when he is not looking), and keep your money.

It's over

I used to visit this shop every time I came to Paris. It is never been an unexpesive place, but the owners seem to have gone crazy now. And the quality follows an inverse direction: it goes down while the prices go up. There isn't anything there that you cannot find (30 to 50 per cent less expensive) in other shops in Paris. Pity: an era is finished.

Heaven on earth.

I visited here on a cold, rainy day. It was like entering the gates of paradise! It was a little busy. I found two items I could not live without, and took a few pictures as i stood wide-eyed, gawking at the beautiful displays. I waited my turn and asked the owner if he could recommend a selection of pepper to take home with me. He showed me a gorgeous set in their signature glass tubes and I added it to my pile. I continued shopping as he had some other customers to attend to, and was receiving a shipment. I had a book with me which had beautiful full colour pictures of his shop, and a lovely write up, so I showed him and asked him to sign it, which he did with much grace. I asked about a special blend I'd heard of that they do for a famous Paris restaurant and his sister disappeared into the back and within a few minutes brought it out for me. She then disappeared again and brought me another bag of her "special" blend, full of herbs and flower petals, which she insisted was a gift to me. It was a work of art! I thanked her profusely and she left, to return once again with another blend, and gave it to her brother, who told me that was also a gift to me from his sister. She disappeared quickly, even before I could thank her properly. He took the time to tell us about his father and how he opened the shop after the war and that nothing has been changed since. I found it utterly charming, and the selection of spices I came away with will bring back so many beautiful memories of this Paris trip. I don't speak French, but could not have been made more welcome.

The good times are gone...

I used to like to visit this shop, but this was my last trip. It was always quirky, and the elderly owners have always been appropriately cranky - and this was one of the reasons I liked to shop here - but times have changed, and not for the better. Last week, I stopped by and entered the little side room, as I have done for many years. I was rudely told to "exit the area immediately", and was told that no one has been allowed to enter this room for at least 3 years. This is not true, and never has been in my 20 years of shopping here. As I speak French, I discussed this with the owner, but to no avail. I figured they must have their reasons, and continued shopping. Besides this little change, I noticed a change for the worse in the merchandise - both selection and price. Izrael has never been inexpensive, but the prices have skyrocketed - especially in regard to dried fruits, nuts, that sort of thing. In addition, now they are carrying "American-ized" storage tins, trays, cups - whereas before, there was a good selection of French advertising ware - La Vache Qui Rit, Souchard, Lu, etc. I was saddened to see this, and would not be surprised if the place changes hands in the near future. Excellent quality dried fruit and nuts may be purchased at Le Grand Epicerie at Bon Marche, and also at Galeries Lafayette Gourmet. Very good quality is available at any open-air food market in Paris. As for the tins, cups, etc - La Vaissellerie carries a good stock. All the other potions, oils, liquors can be found just about anywhere, these days - there's no reason to pay extra for the dust. Sorry, Izrael, it was fun while it lasted...
