I hate to say I came here and saw La cantatrice chauve almost sixty years ago, then the same thirty years ago, then this week again. They haven’t aged! It’s the same wonderful absurdist play by Eugène Ionesco. The actors were very professional. The set could have been more evocative of a British drawing room, but was adequate.
The play lasts only one hour, followed by La leçon, which was already sold out, maybe because the performance we went to had English subtitles (Wednesdays only).
The staff is helpful and amusing.
Before and after the show one can enjoy rue de la Huchette and the surrounding streets that are a lot of fun.

My main reason for visiting this place was this Amazing show ( The Bald Soprano ) and I’m really happy about it. Don’t hesitate to go.
And special thanks to the kind and helpful staffs.

We saw La Cantatrice Chauve here a few weeks ago. I had seen it when i was in college and wanted my wife to see it. The theatre itself is small and seating rather cramped so this one hour play is just the right amount of time. The play itself was great - it has been going strong for about 60 years in the same theatre (albeit not with the same actors :) ).

Since the 1950's, generations of actors at Theatre La Huchette have been presenting the same double bill of Ionesco's THE BALD SOPRANO and THE LESSON on a regular schedule, without fail.

The stylistic journey you will take when you visit this tiny jewel box on rue de la Huchette will land you somewhere in the visionary imagination of Ionesco's absurdist drama and a historical artifact that is fascinating to behold.

The company are vital, committed and virtuosic in their rendering of the two short dramas. Especially commanding is the gentleman we saw play the teacher in THE LESSON. I couldn't locate his name, but he is ancient and vital, world weary and sparkling all at once. His mastery of Ionesco's text is an acting master class in itself.

If you are interested in the history of 20th century drama, you owe it to yourself to see this double bill. It is rare, delightful and something to savor in our world of passing fads.

Bravo to the whole company!

This charming little theatre was just across the narrow street from out hotel in Rue de la Huchette. Each night there were 3 different short performances but I only had time to go to one, La Cantatrice Chauve. The intimacy of the theatre made one feel that one was actually part of the scene. The performances were in french but the air of comedy of this particular piece of theatre was universal. I suspect that even a non french speaker with an would enjoy it. I loved it.

Tiny theatre at walking distance from Notre-Dame-de-Paris preseting the Bald Soprano (la Cantatrice chauve) since 1957. You will laugh and be amazed by the actor's talent.

Tiny and very popular place for theater lovers of all ages. Full every night with cosmopolitan french-speakers. Cosy atmosphere. Script is clever and disconcerting, easy to loose onself in these absurd dialogues... Refreshing experience. Staging is excellent. Same programme every night. Great activity to do when visiting paris with teenagers who are learning the language.

Cute little theater with a dead-on production of the Bald Soprano (La Cantatrice Chauve). Even if you don't speak French but simply know the play in English you'll laugh yourself silly. You've probably seen in the other reviews that it's been playing here since 1957 but it hasn't gotten tired at all. My daughter was laughing so loud that the actors turned to her when they did their bows. Perfect performance.

I love this little theater and have gone back more than a dozen times over the years. It's really kind of amazing, especially if you have any appreciation for the absurd. They have been staging the same two Ionesco plays: The Bald Soprano and The Lesson since 1957. While the cast obviously changes over time, virtually nothing else does, so it's oddly comforting to see over and over and over again. Performed only in French I don't think it even matters that much if you don't understand a lot of the language, the absurdity of human nature will shine through anyway. (And it's easy enough to read through an English translation before you go so you will have the general idea in mind.) It's often crowded, especially in the summer months, and the seats are not reserved, so go a little early, join the throng that bustles around the front door and then enjoy the hilarious performances.
