The office did not open until 9.30 which was a bit of nuisance but once opened they were helpful with plenty of brochures and guides.

Vichy is one town in France which is open on Sundays. Unfortunately, the tourism office is closed. We couldn't get much help from anyone as people hardly speak English. This office is located in the old Vichy close to Sources Des Vichy.

Walks around Vichy

Does not do justice to Vichy

Sadly Vichy is poorly served by this tourist office. Vichy is a lovely town which punches well above its weight in the amenities and attractions which it offers, and it deserves better promotion. There is a paucity of information on display.

In the entrance hall / vestibule there are three racks of leaflets and small brochures. There is no labelling or organisation of the information. Leaflets about attractions in Vichy, the surrounding area, elsewhere in the department of Allier and the wider region are all muddled together. For someone who was unfamiliar with the geography of the area, it would be difficult to make effective plans.

The main hall of the tourist office is large and rather sterile. As well as the counter for tourist information, it houses some tourist items for sale and the Opéra ticket office. However there is no tourist information on display, apart from the books for sale. Everything has to be requested at the information desk.

Each year there is a brochure published ‘La Saison à Vichy’ with details of events in Vichy itself and the surrounding towns. However you would never know this without prior knowledge, because it is kept behind the counter in a box or cupboard and has to be requested. It is then handed over like a piece of illicit contraband. Likewise the much newer glossy magazine ‘Vichy Destinations’. I have never been able to work out the reason for this, unless it is a cost saving measure.

I have been coming to the Vichy area for a long time, and when the tourist office was refurbished several years’ ago I had high hopes that the service would be improved. Alas, it is no better.

Something I do recommend are the themed guided walks in the afternoon. I have taken a couple of them and they are worth doing if you understand French.
