Not the prettiest stadium
Sep 2019
I went to a match between Girondins and PSG. The match itself was really good and intense. I had the possibility to see Neymar and Mbappe which made me quite happy. The stadium is well connected with the tram station which makes it easy to get there. Ligue 1 matches are never sold out so you can easily get some tickets directly at the stadium. Recommendable for everybody who loves to watch football

Beautiful and friendly stadion!

Build in 2015, this really nice stadion had been built. Lovely view from every corner to the field. All been painted with - so really “fresh”. Big walk arounds with a lot of different foodstores. Parking around normally great (6.000 plages), but when we visited the stadion they blocked the mainroad.

Wonderful stadium - more should go

Built for the 2016 European Championships, the Stade Matmut Atlantique is now the permanent home of French Ligue 1 side Girondins de Bordeaux, a side arguably most famous outside France for being where Zinedine Zidane made his name, but more locally are known as one of French football's more successful club sides.

Located rather outwith Bordeaux's city centre, but easily accessible in around 30 mins or so by tram line C, the Matmut Atlantique is very much part of the new wave of designer stadiums that seem to be taking over continental football.

Designed with a very striking exterior, with a series of thin, white beams coming down from the roof, the ground is easily one of the most eye-catching I've visited on my travels around Europe.

Arriving on matchday, you'll be greeted by a small row of official stalls, some selling food, some club merchandise, some tickets and some with videogames for kids. There is also a large screen which shows any other live games so you can keep up to speed with what else is happening in Ligue 1.

As much as these sections can come across as cheesy, I actually quite enjoyed Bordeaux's efforts. There's been a bit of work put in without taking it too far, and I applaud that. There is a ticket office and an official club store located at the stadium (which only opens in matchdays) however this is poorly signposted, and I didn't even discover this until after I'd left.

As such, I bought my ticket from the little stall I mentioned earlier, which only took credit card payment. These are not sold in the Bordeaux club store on Rue St. Catherine oddly. If you are there days in advance you can pick them up at the store at the training ground, which is outwith the city, but this only opens Monday to Friday.

Once you enter the actual stadium you are greeted by the normal food stall, marginally over-priced for food and drink in any other mainland European city, but for France actually quite decently priced, offering a competent selection of rolls, chips, crisps and drinks, including beer.

Arguably the most surprising part of the concourse is that just after the food stalls there is a 'kid zone' where I imagine their mascot Bengi hangs out, but also contains a small games arcade(!) - this is definitely a first for me. On a more practical note, the concourse also has a section where wheelchair users can park and actually receive a pretty good view of the game, so marks for that!

Inside the actual ground, I've got to say I was very impressed with the Matmut Atlantique. Somewhat oddly, given that their shirt is predominantly a shade of dark navy they have dubbed 'Marine' the entire stadium is cast in brilliant white, with the exception of the odd seat in a very light grey. As much as I like a team's seats to match their colours, this is genuinely makes for a unique and eye-catching aesthetic, so I'll let it slide.

Seats are almost abnormally large and comfortable, and everything is very clean and well maintained. There are 2 large scoreboards mounted on the roof above both goals which broadcast tv feed of the game, albeit the majority of the seats actually offer an excellent view. Despite having a 'boxy' British style exterior, the inner actually has fully curved ends which make for good vantage points pretty much everywhere you can sit.

Indeed, probably the only disappointing aspect of the actual matchday experience for me is how underwhelming the crowd was. This is no slight on those who were there, Bordeaux naturally have a fanatical group of Ultras behind one goal who give it their all to create an atmosphere, but a stadium with a capacity just over 42,000 to cater to a city with a population of around 250,000 shouldn't be over half empty, particularly when you take into account ease of access and the fact Bordeaux aren't actually a bad team. Also worth noting this was a warm Saturday night I visited and not a rainy midweek tie.

While Bordeaux isn't exactly the opposite end of the country from Paris and the glamour of PSG, at just over 2 hours on a train it isn't exactly on its doorstep either. I can't help but think, given the amount of tourists the city attracts, that selling tickets from the central club store, and even advertising this fact, might do their attendance some good.

As mentioned, unfortunately nothing at the stadium is open on non-matchdays, which is a shame. Also quite unusual for a brand new stadium not to come equipped with some form of trophy room or stadium tour.

While I may have done a bit of moaning about the Matmut Atlantique, the truth is I actually really liked it as a stadium, and would absolutely recommend it for a visit. The funny thing is that this actually makes me want to see the club better themselves and actually get more crowds and money in. I do hope Bordeaux manage to get a good string of results together and hopefully get more people in to enjoy this rather excellent stadium.

Very new and modern stadium, with several food stalls available. Very big, with ample and free parking. Kids areas inside and outside, as per the local team it depends from the season...

Easy to travel to on the tram route C. Well organised at the event and very clean throughout the stadium including the toilet facilities. Prices for food and drink were not inflated

Beautiful new stadium

The stadium is only a couple years old and it’s really beautiful. It’s big enough to hold a lot of people and yet small enough that every seat is really very good. It’s very nicely designed inside and the outside is spectacular design as well.

Easy transport to the game provided

We were lucky enough to catch a game when we visited Bordeaux and found sitting in the Kop a very interesting experience. Special shuttles are put on that meet up with the red tramline making it very easy to get to and from the game on public transport. Good security at the venue and met some friendly locals. Just a shame the local team suffered a loss that day.

Great modern easy accessible stadium - GnR
Jun 2018 • Teman
The Matmut is a very modern, new built stadium in northern city suburbs. It's very easy accessible from downtown by tram, about a 30 min ride on it's last stop.
We were there for a spectacular Guns n Roses 3,5 hrs show. Everything was well organized, from entrance to refreshment counters. Many clean toilletes.
The only thing I would advise is to avoid the eastern platform for summer afternoon/evening events as the sun is burning directly from the west.

Amazing stadium - Guns n Roses

Really good stadium for the gig, would suggest you either park outside the stadium or get a cab. It was packed to get out and we walked a couple of miles before grabbing a cab as the roads were Grid locked. The venue itself is very good and big. Plenty of toilets.

Great stadium for Guns n Roses but very poorly organised
Jun 2018 • Keluarga
Great concert venue that is easily accessible. Located close to several hotels plus lots of parking options outside the stadium if they decide to close the roads thus not allowing you access to your chosen hotel 5 mins walk to the stadium. Lots of bars inside to get a drink and something to eat but only 2 open for a 3 hour concert in 34 degree heat. People passing out in the heat and not being able to get water isn’t on. Very poor organisation in an otherwise great venue.
