Having once stopped here before a mere 10 minutes before closing time, we never got a chance to see round the small museum dedicated to a Scottish twentieth century literary colossus. We resolved to return and did so yesterday. We were so pleasantly greeted by the young lady member of staff that the whole thing got off to the best of possible starts. We began with a short video presentation about James Leslie Mitchell, aka Lewis Grassic Gibbon, which set the scene and prepared us for the tour round the small exhibition. Mitchell was in many ways a troubled soul and so the angst suffered by Chris Guthrie, heroine of the Scots Quair trilogy was more then autobiographical. Her struggles of the past rural way of life against the developing modern city/industrial imperative, her academic intellect versus the simpler ways of the country folk into whom she had been born and an almost obsessive sense of place reflected the inner battles faced by MItchell. This is admirably brought out in the film and in the attractive well laid-out display showing timelines, biographical detail and displaying artefacts some personal and others of the time. After the visit we settled into a lengthy chat with our hostess who showed huge knowledgeable enthusiasm for the museum and the man in whose honour it had been set up. Sadly we didn't avail ourselves of an food or drink but the menu looked tempting. We bought a couple of bits from the shop which meant we didn't have to pay the £2.75 entry fees, but a stop at this excellent little place set in the heart of the beautiful Mearns is a must!

Interesting small museum with some nice gifts and a wonderful tearoom. Amazing freshly baked apple and cinnamon scones. Great coffee too. Local crafts eg. turned wooden bowls for sale; some books and local honey.

We live locally and have been a few times now, since there has been a change of management of the cafe. My sister is disabled so we go out for snacks and coffees a lot! This is now one of our favourite places to go. The staff are so welcoming and friendly it is a pleasure to visit! Add to this the delicious soup, savoury scones, cakes etc and you couldn’t get better. They have a winning combination! We hope that locals and tourists support them, particularly at this time of COVID. Hand sanitisers, tables far apart and masks worn .... you couldn’t be safer!

Nice quiet location, easy parking. Well laid out to meet with covid measures. Good selection of home bakes, soups, paninis and scones were fresh and tasty (apple and cinammon). Can purchase some locally produced crafts and also selection of books to purchase.

Warmly welcomed to this lovely little centre. Very interesting museum, and the friendly curator had lots of interesting information and anecdotes, as well as helpful suggestions of other things to do and see in the local area. The cafe was great, and the home baking was wonderful. Looking forward to visiting again when we are in the area.

A great place in a beautiful location, well worth the drive from Aberdeen.
Great food and service and at a very reasonable price.
Covid safe; they are extremely well organised, doing everything required in a very relaxing, special place.

Thank you

Very friendly staff and delicious huge homemade scones in the cafe. The museum was small but lovely and quaint. My favourite part was taking a short walk down to the graveyard to visit his gravestone, in the shape of an open book. This was suggested by the lady in the cafe and takes you past what was once the local school.

I recently took my girlfriend to this centre. She is a monkey enthusiast and I thought this gibbon centre would be the ideal way to propose. Get her to meet a gibbon whigh I would first entrust with the ring. Then when she entered the enclosure the gibon would swing over holding the ring and perch on my shoulder as I knelt down. It would then extend it's monkey hand and reveal the ring.
However, to my massive disappointment when we arrived we saw no enclosure. I thought May be the gibbons where just very well trained and lived in the centre or were free range gibbons. We paid the entry fee and only after did I discover that there were in fact no gibbons in this "gibbon" centre! This is blatant false advertising!
We broke up shortly after this when I funnily found a real gibbon centre but the monkey did not follow my plan of action, swallowed the ring and kept the money I paid it to help with my proposal. It later got a promotion to London zoo, which is an utter farce if you ask me, and I still hadn't gotten my ring back when he left.
Long story short I would not visit this attraction again, but the cafe does do good sandwiches.

Often seen the brown ‘Grassic Gibbon’ sign on our travels. Took the kids. Disappointed. No monkeys...
