This building is surprisingly big. It is located right beside the Walls, overlooking Bogside. That is culturally very significant. The building is architecturally magnificent, well, at least on the 2 main sides

Weren't inside this building but it looks grand from the outside. Saw it on the city walls walk. Very interesting.

The Apprentice Boys is a society which parades around Derry twice a year and publicly burns an effigy of a guy thought to have betrayed the city hundreds of years ago.

A well maintained and curated museum, imparting one of two sides of a history often distorted by the media. Interesting exhibits and video displays. Quite a chilling story.

The Siege Museum is a hidden treasure trove of history!

As you walk around the famous walls you come across the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall and just up the street beside is the Siege Museum. Just £4 entrance fee and we got to spend quite some time learning about the history of the siege, the personal history and role of the apprentices and the tradition of opening and closing the gates every year. There is also a lot of artefacts relating to the First World War.

I would definitely recommend that you include this little gem in your itinerary!

Another historic place on the wall

As you walk around Londonderry on the wall, there are a lot of historic buildings, memorials - this one is the Apprentice Boys Hall and is dedicated to 13 apprentices who, in 1688, locked the gates of the city to keep out the Jacobites.
This actual building dates from 1877 and 1937 and looks very grim on a dark rainy day. It now houses the Siege Museum.

You will pass this on your walk around the walls of the City. It is where apprentices from England lived and worked and at one time famously blocked the gates of the City from threatening Catholic invaders. It is the home of the Siege Museum documenting that famous Siege that the Apprentice boys held off with their shouts of "No Surrender!" a cry that is still used by Loyalist supporters of rule by England of Northern Ireland.

Elegant Building By The City Walls

Beautiful Building which tells the story of the Siege of Derry in 1688 and how the apprentice boys closed the doors of the city rather than admit the approaching Catholic forces.
In more troubles times it was one of nany symbols of division and bigotry, thankfully now it is an interesting piece of history.
