Memorials to Irish freedom fighters
Jun 2023
The Free Derry Corner is at the end of Fahan Street in Bogside. From Butcher's Gate it is a 5 minute downhill walk to see several memorials and signs located on this corner of the street and in the grassy median. The memorials commemorate those who died in the Hunger Strike of 1981 and for those in the IRA who have died for the idea of a Republic. Take 20 minutes to view these memorials. The Bloody Sunday memorial contains a large concrete letter H which stands for the part of the prison where the 10 hunger strikers were kept. Each one who died in 1981 has a photo mounted and their date of death with a statement about what goal they hoped to achieve by the hunger strike. There was no information if the Irish prisoners achieved this goal for others (to be treated like political prisoners) as surely they all died. There was also no information about why they had been imprisoned - their actual crimes - just that they fought for Irish freedom as a nation. Another more substanial black marble memorial gave the names, inscribed in gold, of those who had died while fighting in the IRA or on a hunger stirke. These memorials were surrounded by large wall art murals on the exterior end walls of houses nearby and showed what it was like during Bloody Sunday for the Irish in Bogside. Quite a few of these murals faced the British garrison keeping watch, above, in the Royal Bastion on the city's walls, until 2006 and can be viewed when one walks the walls between Bishop's Gate and Magazine Gate. To counter the Free Derry sign, there was a sign inside Londonderry's walls with the slogan, "Londonderry West Bank Loyalists still under siege; no surrender."

This is the beginning of the area of continuing dispute, just not violent right now. The New IRA is active and protestants still feel uncomfortable in this area.

We went on a tour of the city walls, shopped on the Diamond and crossed the Peace bridge all in a few hours

First time back to (London)Derry after over 50 years, when the Troubles were at their height. We visited the Free Derry corner on Easter Saturday and Easter was always a time for the Easter Rising to be commemorated in Derry. We were informed that the first Easter commemoration in three years was taking place that weekend.

There is a raw, sad and embittered feel as the victims at Bloody Sunday, or the Bogside Massacre of 1972, the 1981 Irish hunger strikers, are all commemorated in monuments, murals, flags and emblems. The leaders of the Civil Rights also have their murals and, on the day we visited, a remembrance was held, for a teenager who was shot as he walked in the in the nearly Westland Street area. The Bogside is like a microcosm of conflict and strife all over the world, where people hang on to their troubled history to avoid a recurrence and produce a better future.

It is a very moving place for people who know the history; from the various nearby murals, to the famed "Entering Free Derry" wall, to the monument to the prisoners from H Block, to the Bloody Sunday Massacre Monument.
There is such an overwhelming feeling in the area that I can't truly put into words.

This is an interesting area where you can see plenty of the murals as well as the famous wall and a couple of monuments. You don't need to spend a lot of time here but if you are interested in the murals wander further into the estate to see more. Also visit the Museum of Free Derry for an understanding of what happened in those streets.

Good to walk around here and see the wall Murals in the area. Lots of history here. Close to the Bloody Sunday Memorial also.

Interesting area enjoyed taking in the murals and reflecting on their place in history.
Gives an insight to some of the causes of the Troubles. The desire for civil rights and equality.
Well worth taking in whilst in Derry.
Easy enough to drive up to the area and park close by and wander round.

This is one of many art muruals across derry. Great to see it and learn about the history around it, there are guided tours available but we just went down and looked and read about it ourselves.

Depressing area with the people wallowing in the past and their 'Free Derry' the city is free and in general a very nice place but this part of the city is depressing... the people need to look forward not always backwards and wallowing in their one sided view of history. Rest of the city is lovely and feels more european with lovely cafes etc
