After having visited Weatfen over 25 years, this is our favourite nature reserve of all. According to their own information board, Wheaten is a special, in its own way, as Mount Everest, due to the longest series of nature observations. It's always quiet and peaceful and amazing all 12 months of the year. Note that some paths can flood, so use the map and don't use closed paths.

Spent a couple of hours walking round the reserve, absolute bliss. A perfect escape from the crazy covid-19 world we are living in at the present. What is essential though are wellies, difficult without them at Wheatfen this time of year. Spent some time in the woods looking for fungi then walked around the rest of the reserve. If you love nature this is a place to visit.

Wheatfen is a hidden gem SE of Norwich. It is not widely advertised nor signposted - we found it on marked walk leaflets. It is sited off a narrow and loose-surfaced country lane - well off the beaten track.
Lovely Broadland setting with views of water, reeds, flowers, trees, marshland, river.
We met the "local royalty" too - the "youngest Ellis" introduced herself and gave a short conversation on the reserve.
We only had time to see half of the reserve - it is worth a 2-3 hour visit.
Paths are well marked out but can be very wet in places - bring your wellies!
Some paths lead to the riverside with views of passing boats.

Was great to finally visit a place I heard so much about from Ted Ellis on tv and at school when I was young. I should have gone years ago. A variety of paths means you can pick a distance to suit your ability. Much is boardwalk and raised paths above marsh and so much wildlife and flora and fauna. I went when there was a spring high tide and one or two places the boardwalk had a couple of inches of water so maybe worth checking tides before you go. Was still.possible to get round dry on shorter paths. This is a lasting tribute to the Ellis family and is unspoilt and well managed. Will be back again soon.

Nightmare to find,no signs anywhere on route and sat navs took us to wrong place.
Once in car park still no signs to start and walked the wrong way through the woods.
Once on reserve no signs on walkway easily get a bit confused on direction .
Lovely setting though not sure with the hassle to find it.

Not visited here for many years & can't imagine why I've left it so long. It is such a beautiful, unspoilt place, so rare nowadays. There are plenty of different walks offering views across Wheatfen broad & through the woods. The walks are well marked & many offering circular options. Some have board walks so ok for people with limited mobility. We visited after a lengthy wet spell & was rather boggy under foot but a pair of wellies meant most paths could still be used. A real hidden gem that I hope remains the way it is for many years to come.

Went with grown up children and grandchildren and they all really enjoyed it so suitable for all age groups. It was very quiet and peaceful. Although the car park was nearly full it is such a big place that we only saw 4 other people whilst we were there. The free map was very helpful and stopped us getting lost and gave us lots of info on the way round.

This was a beautiful reserve to visit. Owned by the Ted Ellis Trust, this Nature reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the last tidal marshes of the Yare valley. It has a circular walk right around the reserve and has a mix of open fen, reed beds small broads and deep waters. There is one hide absolutely full of historic photos of the reserve all if which are a pleasure to observe. There is a map available on site which has a key to 12 points of interest as you make your way around. There is a large car park, Dogs are not allowed and access is a bit limited to walking only. It really is a little gem of a place and takes about an hour to walk around.

This is a nice little nature reserve to walk around. However, the hide is a bit far back from the view and is entirely open so it isn't really good for sitting to watch the wildlife. There are not many places to view the wildlife from either so from that view point there are some better places to go to watch the wildlife in the area.

We were the only visitors so everywhere was quiet and peaceful, thereby allowing us to enjoy the stunning natural history of this nature reserve. There are numerous birds to be seen, together with masses of flora. The reserve is not suitable for unruly children who could easily fall into the many waterways and boggy areas. Our only disappointment was that we did not mange to see a swallowtail butterfly. A wonderful memorial to the late Ted Ellis.

There is a wheelchair accessible boardwalk which extends to a thatched bird hide and a pontoon in one of the dykes where it is possible to get lowered into boats (although I don't know if this happens anymore, need to check with the Ted Ellis Trust or Wheatfen's warden about this). The boardwalk is maybe 300m long, built in the 80s I understand (a challenge met by good old Anneka Rice!). Most of the rest of the marsh is left natural but in the dry phases, you might be able to venture slightly "off piste" too. It's a tiny charity with limited funds so I'm afraid there may never be the funding for further alterations.
