A brilliant, eccentrically curated, beautifully presented insight into the industrial revolution. Best visited on a live steam day

Visited on one of their steam days and were lucky enough to arrive just as the owner, Rowan Francis, was about to give a guided tour. His enthusiasm is infectious. It is incredible that these large machines, which used to power British industry, have landed up in a small village in Norfolk.
Make sure that you go on a steam up day and be shown round by Dr Francis who explains how each machine works.
Don't miss it!

Went there on a Saturday when it was in steam, you will need to look up these times on their web site, You will need to use a satnav to get there, but it is well worth the effort. A wide variety of workings stationary engines and aminiature traction enginek shop display was given by a very entertaining demonstrator who explained the intricacies of the machine clearly.

Discovered this gem today. The museum is now a Trust and has some impressive steam engines used in industry. It includes one from Tower Bridge in London. Seeing the engines in motion is a must - but even not in motion the Museum pays homage to industrial engines which have been saved. Well worth it.

A unexpected find. We visited on a tour day which is a must. The guide was perfect, giving funny insites into how he acquired the machines. You got to see them in action and there where no questions he couldent answer. The facilitys were clean. And the onsite cafe had amazing homemade food from chocolate cake to elderflower cordial which was loverly. If your near by you must pop in.

I was lucky enough to be in Norfolk when the museum was having one of its in steam days. For any one who is interested in steam and industrial heritage this must be one of if not the best museum in the uk. It is run by enthusiasts, the ones I spoke to were extremely knowledgeable and more than willing to indulge me by answering my questions. The buildings are well lit and the information boards provide enough information to whet one's appetite sufficiently to want more knowledge of the exhibits. If you're in Norfolk make the effort and go to Forncett I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

The steam museum is very good with many exhibits in steam, a good commentary by the owner and information for people who wish to know more about how steam engines work and what they were used for.
The owners can also provide accomodation on a B&B basis in beautiful surroundings. Breakfast being served in a large conservatory with a heated floor.

We came to the museum on a non-steaning day expecting to spend an hour here before visiting another museum. The museum happened to be in steam due to maintenance being carried out on one of the engines which was a nice surprise. We had a tour around the engines with one of the volunteers and another showed us the steam powered workshop. Ended up spending most of the day here, chatting to the volunteers and looking at the engines. A great place to visit, greatly recommended.

A tiny little museum tucked away in rural Norfolk this place is a must see if you're in any way interested in the history of steam and/or the Industrial Revolution!

Among other things there's one of the original 'Cross Compound' engines used to open Tower Bridge in London AND the Victorian Engineers Workshop is the hub of the museum!

Dr Rowan Francis presents wonderful tours with very interesting anecdotes about how he collected these magnificent engines!

A retired anaesthetist & consultant, Dr Francis has spent a lifetime building his collection (including taking a job overseas to pay for one of his engines!)

There really is something for everyone here-ideal for a Sunday afternoon especially if the weather is rubbish! It's very very warm in there!

There is plenty of parking

Excellent facilities, lovely staff and very reasonably priced
£8.00 adults, £7.00 senior citizens & accompanied kids free!

There is ice cream and other refreshments available such as hot pork rolls, cheese toasties, all kinds of homemade cake, hot beverages and locally produced elderflower cordial!

A definite win win museum-if possible go to 'Steam-up' Sundays (May-October) or Heritage days rather than 'static days' so you can see these wonderful engines in action!

As a Yank, I visited the British Isles for 5 weeks in the fall of 2016, seeing many museums, areas, and engines involved in the great industrial revolution. One of my best visits was a hidden gem in the countryside, namely the Forncett Industrial Steam Museum. Believe me, I have seen engines from around the world, but this museum excels!
The many steam engines were running on live steam...yes, that is great, but one must understand the melding of these wonderful 'beasts' with the purpose, love, and drive that their 'father', Dr. Rowan Francis shows. When giving the tour, one feels the pride Dr. Rowan exudes as he tells the history and operation of the many engines. The tour is not a 'let's get this over with' tour, but has real soul. The engines are well maintained, and are easily viewable by all. The explanations are heard well, as a portable PA system is used. I was made to feel very welcome, and enjoyed myself immensely. For those who are not that crazy about steam engines, I feel they would enjoy a visit here. Unlike some museums, this is well lit for taking pictures and movies.
The only drawback, is I did not have a rental car, but the taxi fare from Norwich was not exorbitant. Gene K.
