A museum that is well worth a visit!

I couldn't recommend a visit to shire hall more! I had an insightful and invaluable experience when exploring the cells and court house, whilst learning about true stories of crime, punishment and justice (or injustice) in Dorset. Additionally, the current Agatha Christie exhibition is worth a visit for any fellow true crime fanatics, as I throughly enjoyed learning more about the author. Finally, the cafe is a brilliant way to end the visit. I assure you won't be disappointed with excellent selection of cakes, sandwiches, brunch option and classics (there is something for everyone!). Thank you to all the friendly and knowledgable staff who contributed to experience. I hope to be back soon!

Atmospheric & Bigger Than You Think!

I attended a Most Haunted Experience ghost hunt here and was amazed at what I found. From the outside the building doesn't look all that big, but it's hiding plenty of secrets. A fantastic old court room, plus tunnels and old jail cells below. It was a very enjoyable experience to get the chance to explore the building at night.

We all really enjoyed our visit,very interesting,my son loved the court room putting on the different hats and putting on the judges outfit! Think he thought he was judge rinder!

The museum was such a lovely experience! All the staff were super lovely and helpful and the courthouse was very interesting. The best bit was the audio tour was free and really added to the experience!

Tales of the unexpected

Considering I had recently done jury service visiting this museum was really pertinent. The stories behind the various convicts was so interesting and shows how the process of justice has changed over time. I enjoyed this museum so much I went for two days in a row. I also hiahly recommend the cafe which does reasonably priced and very tasty lunches.

Great Breakfast with Santa

Have visited this Museum with school trips and found all staff to be very efficient and able to share knowledge well with children. Today we visited with our grandchildren for 'Breakfast with Santa' and we were all extremely impressed. The staff everywhere were so welcoming and helpful at all times, everything was well prepared for our visit with place names (gift bags) for the children on our table and the table itself was spacious and very clean, inviting and seasonally festive. The service at our table was as good as I have ever experienced, the food well cooked and presented, drinks were plentiful with a good choice for both adults and children.
Santa and his Elf greeted the children instantly on arrival which was nice, they came around our table a couple of times to check all was well and to bring the children a small gift and we had a great photo session with them on the way out.
Absolutely fabulous experience for adults and children of ALL ages. We could not recommend this activity highly enough and will be booking again next year, thanks to all the staff for making these grandparents and granchildren very happy !

we hadn't reliised this museum had been opened but glad we did as it is very moving. I took the audio guide for the trial of Martha Brown, my husband had Harry, mmarthas story is particularly tragic but depicts how justice was perceived in victorian times. staff were helpful, we had coffee in the cafe which was good, especially the cakes! as we had a young grandson with us and bought annual tickets we will return on our own so we can linger longer. The museum is well set out, not to be confused with the Dorset museum further down the street which opens earlier at 9 am The price is average for a museum of that size these days.

Excellent and emotionally engaging Shire Hall Museum

Second visit to this excellent museum and it was just as good as the first. Informative panels chart the history and the atmosphere of the original building contributes to an experience that lingers for days afterwards. Felt very safe moving through, too. Excellent cafe as well, with a superb choice of fairly priced and delicious food. Am looking forward to using my ticket again in the coming year.
