A site to explore a very short walk from the main high street of Dorchester.
Information boards, a free space to explore the history of where the town began.
Interesting visit.

This is an in-situ archaeological site of a Roman townhouse. The best preserved elements are the floor mosaics. There's lots features at the ground level that are visible and with the help of the information boards, easy to identify and interpret. The layout of the house has also been preserved, which makes the visit extra special as it make it easier to visualise what kind of home this was.

We were lucky to get a guided tour of the house which brought it much to life, from the story of it's excavation to the bad decision of one caretaker in the 60s of pick axed up the mosaics to the sad memorial stones of the children buried on site.
Well worth a visit beautiful mosaics, easy access good sign boards.

Hidden away behind County Hall is this super little freebie, yes free! The remains of a Roman town house have been beautifully presented here, with good information boards around as well as information, both visual and audio, on the covered part itself. You can’t go into the covered part without prior arrangement but it is easy to peer through the glass and see the mosaics and all the information is designed to be seen/heard from the outside.
The mosaics are in various degrees of preservation but you can still get a real feel for their original look, and two of the rooms have hypocausts.
If you have children studying the Romans at school you should definitely bring them.
Definitely worth the short walk!

Very impressed with the site and a beautiful layout with lots of explanation, drawings of the recreated site and easy access around the ruins. Mosaics are on view but protected behind glass however the various rooms are open to the sky including hypocausts and the old Roman well. No charge to visit the site. So great to see the site open yet protected in a way that respects the history.

Close to the County Hall, a Roman townhouse has been excavated, and a modern covering building erected. It is in a hollow, reflecting the lower street level then. For the use of school groups, a stone raked seating has been constructed, which I thought very useful. There are information panels around the site, and the remains of some mosaics, and of the hypercaust. It was interesting to see the only remaining town house excavation in Britain, and as another reviewer has said, you would expect more to be made of it than is. It was free to visit, which was nice.

The best kept secret in Dorchester. An actual Roman Town house hidden away. You can visit this attraction for free and spend 30 mins investigating the site. Interesting mosaics and layout.

Possibly not helped by a cold, grey October day, but I found this potential treasure a disappointment. It is only a short distance from the town centre, but it is not particularly well signposted; you would have thought that it was something to be proud of.
Although there are explanatory panels giving an overview, there are no panels on the site itself, which is a big missed opportunity. Also, I could only get one of the four lights to work that are intended to show up the mosaics.
And whoever authorised the building of the Council Offices on the rest of this historic site should be shot.

A little off the beaten track but well worth a visit.  The mosaics are quite spectacular given their age.  They have done a good job protecting the site with a new roof over it but really needed to have more photos areas where you can take a photo without getting a load of reflections from the glass.  A few more information boards around the site would have been useful, the ones up at the entrance were very good but you can’t remember all of that as you are walking round
