This was our second visit to Hardy's cottage, we visited in June 2019. Although we loved this cottage and its gardens there was something missing this time. When we visited in 2019 the wonderful father and daughter guides, Alan and Hetty were in period costume with Hetty in the kitchen cooking small treats for visitors to enjoy and Alan in the living room telling you of the history of the family and the cottage and its gardens . Alan and Hetty were there this time but Hetty in the kitchen just telling us about how it would have functioned and other interesting facts about the cottage and its inhabitants(Hetty would love to get back into costume and cooking, come on National Trust reinstate this ) Alan still gave us a wonderful insight into Hardy's life and writings and the history of the cottage and surroundings along with local areas used in Hardy's writing. Go on to visit Max Gate just a few miles away to gain an insight to Hardy's later life. Both well worth a visit

This is very much rural Dorset, cottage in the woods, pretty garden, next to an orchard with bee hives. I can imagine a sunny day in June was probably as picturesque as it gets. This is the residence of Hardy's parents and his birthplace and is the first bookend of his life story, Max Gate the other bookend.

Early arrivals for pre-booked slots are asked to wait outside the garden on one of the benches in the orchard.

When we were at Max Gate we overheard arrangements being made for a guest with mobility concerns to visit this site. If you have any difficulty with an up and down woodland path then consider accessing the property via the road or dropping off before parking.

Hardy's cottage is the family home where Hardy was raised and where he lived for some of his life. Itis quite small but nonetheless interesting. It provides a different view comepared to the normal exhibitions, or his more well known house at Max Gate.
Be aware that the signed access path from the visitor centre is quite hard going (although very pretty). If you have ANY mobility problems, walk down the lane that runs past the visitor centre as you approach from the car park

Following the sign from the car park takes you on a rambling walk through the woods around the house, which gives a feel of Hardy's early life, but takes ten to fifteen minutes and would be miserable on a wet day. It's easier and quicker to exit the car park and turn right behind the visitors' centre and walk up the lane.
On arrival we were checked in and were then given an engaging description of Hardy's parents and grandparents, how the house came to be built and how it was altered and added to through the years and about the family history. It was also fascinating to learn how the land around the house was used for produce and for the business.
We then went into the house and the guide asked if we would like to sit down and hear some stories. We expected these would be about the family and the house. What we mostly got, though, was a rambling description of a railway journey Thomas Hardy might or might not have made, a description of a local pub and of a local church whose stained glass windows were blown out during WW2 and replaced with engraved glass and were questioned about why we weren't visiting there rather than the cottage. This may have been intended as some sort of irony but was, frankly, tedious.
Another guide, who was waiting in the kitchen, was very animated and informative about life in the house and about the annexe that Thomas Hardy's grandmother occupied. It was a pity that this young woman wasn't the main guide for the house.

I'd advise leaving at least a couple of hours for this visit, to give yourself time to explore the house and grounds thoroughly, but consider who's giving the talk inside before sitting down.

A wonderful place to visit. Need to order tickets on line before going. Parking and visitor center is a short walk away from the cottage. Word of caution, signs to the visitor center are a bit confusing. We were late for our tour time slot, but they took us on the next tour. The walk between the center and cottage is a nice path through the woods. Everyone was so friendly. Had a great conversation with the man at the garden gate entrance to the cottage grounds. The tour guide was awesome, lots of information and stories about the cottage and Thomas Hardy. The cottage is small, but nice and the garden and grounds are beautiful. Highly recommend a visit!

In advance of our visit checked the National Trust website for the cottage. Note that to view the cottage with a tour your visit needs to be pre-booked and your name is ticked off at the garden gate on arrival. Unfortunately car parking also needs to be paid for - car park owned by Dorset Council.

We arrived early on Sunday morning. Everywhere was peaceful and quite empty with it being Platinum Jubilee weekend. The walk through the woods can be quite challenging in places with hills, particularly if with a wheelchair. It is lovely walk listening to the birds. The cottage sits in the corner of a stunning garden full of flowers, the smell of the wood fire burning fills the air. Such a pretty place - peaceful and idyllic, full of history.

This is the cottage in which the future writer Thomas Hardy was born. He is not to be confused with the gay sailor of apocryphal Kiss Me Hardy repute. Nor one half of a 20th century American comedy duo, one half of which was both in the U.K. it’s surrounded by a rambling slightly overgrown garden, the house itself open by appointment and under National Trust stewardship. Worth approaching from the car park, up a hill, through a forest, down a steep footpath before returning for a lunch of Cornish pasty and baked beans or goat’s cheese salad amidst collected folio editions of the great man’s works and the inevitable trivial Knick-knackery so common is n so-called tourist attractions. But also some locally distilled gin.

Fabulous trip back in time and in writer's source of inspiration. One starts to see what's in his books via "the time and place" magic prism - with aha moments and new angles for realisation

My better half and her best friend have wanted to visit the cottage for years. The guide was great with obvious love of books and poems by Thomas Hardy. We enjoyed looking around the cottage and could see the garden has a "micro climate" as several plants were weeks ahead of our own gardens. Had delicious toasties and coffee in the cafe. One slight problem is 2 of us have a mobility problem and found the trek through the woods nearly too much. We were only made aware of the gravel short cut when we got to the cottage.
