The foremost example of the Great Wall of China in the North-East, Hushan is a short, mountainous, well-restored section of the non-contiguous wall north of Dandong. It’s an interesting short up and down scenic walk, the highlight for me is the excellent views deep into acres and acres of predominantly farm land of the (on appearances) people-scarce North Korean countryside.

just a short bus trip from Beijing CBD is the great wall of China. A wonder by all meanings of the word. Weather you appreciate History, Architecture or culture the great wall will simply wow and overwhelm you. Its larger that it looks on photos, higher and physically more challenging to climb that videos or photos can ever show. the market place at the bottom with food, artifacts and memorabilia's is a wonder o its own. You can never claim to have seen China if you never visited the great wall.

So much easier to walk than the Beijing sector as cleverly renovated. No crowns Lovely scenery and we were privileged to see a beautifully dressed couple posing for photographs

Having only been previously to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall near Beijing, it was interesting to visit a very different and remote part of this greatest of walls in the world. Refreshing also to experience a section of 长城 that was NOT overflowing with zillions of climbing tourists which made it necessary to have to keep dodging people on the steps. There were large numbers at the Tiger Mountain Wall but not like in Mutianyu or Juyong Pass in Beijing. The only part of the walk that became a slight bottleneck was two-thirds of the way up to the summit where we had to queue up to climb a set of very steep and narrow stairs. As I expected, some of the wall’s floor surface was in better condition than others, but it was all still perfectly walkable. From the highest lookout point there are commanding views across the border into the wide, unpopulated fields of North Korea. The descent down from the summit is mostly very steep. At the foot of the stairs on the eastern (border) side is a raised battlement area containing the relics of a couple of mounted guns that are several centuries past their use-by date. The end-point of the Hushan Wall walk has two refreshment stations for you to buy a cool drink after a hot summer day’s exertions climbing the wall. Distance views of the Wall’s peak from the road on the northern-western side of the site provide good photo opportunities.

1. How to get there.
As you come out from Dandong railway station. Make a left turn, you will find a white building, that is Dandong bus station. Purchase ticket to Kuandian(宽甸) Direction. Get off at stop Hu Shan Tou(虎山头). You can't miss the entrance.

2. What you can see.
The great wall is not the original great wall. People rebuilt it. I mean, there used to be a great wall here, but not this one.If you come to admire the ancient Chinese defense facilities, try the great walls in Beijing. You will see the north Korea from the very top, the scenery is especially good in Aug and Sep. You will see the NK farmers working.

3. Bonus.
At the bus stop there is a ticket office selling ferry tickets to North Korea inner river. They will give you a free ride to the pier and send you back to the entrance of the great wall once you finish your trip(call them by the phone number they give you ). CNY 30-40.Through this trip, technically speaking, you enter the North Korea!
However,it is not trespass. The trick is there are two large islands belonging to NK, those island used to be China's, but China gave them to NK for the sake of CN-NK friendship in 1960s or 1970s. I don't like that but my preference does not make any difference.

Anyway, they took our islands! They used to be ours!!! Although someone made a really stupid donation in the past. They have no reason to refuse us sailing along the channel of the two islands, in these case, once you sail along the channel, by definition ,you enter NK. You will see NK Barracks, Apts for political prisoners, farms ect.
In summer, the NK resident will sail to your ferry selling eggs and wines.

This walk was very long and hard but worth the great view and the view of North Korea. The breeze was very nice. We got a privet driver so we didn’t have to wait for a long time for one.
We could see outposts from North Korea from the view.

We booked a cab driver here at RMB 60 an hour. It is about half an hour of coastal scenic drive here from the city. My husband paid half price for entrance fee as he is 63 years old. We paid RMB 10 for the tram ride both ways as we were told that it is quite a distance to get to the entrance if we managed to complete the climb.
The initial part is gradual and as the weather was very fine that day, we decided to push on even though it is steep at some parts. There are many steps but we just did it at our own pace. We felt a sense of achievement when we finally completed the walk. We took about 1 hr 15 mins with much resting and photo taking. We were glad and thankful to catch the transport back to the starting point. There is a small road near there which leads to the "one foot across" which is the closest point to North Korea. However there are fences on both sides. Funnily, I managed to access my whatsapp at some point up in the Great Wall.

The highlight of the Dandong trip was the visit to the Hushan section of the Great Wall located just 20km out of town. Ten years ago, I was the only visitor at this wall (although it was on a weekday in low season) and I got dropped off at what looked like a random location along the highway. No doubt about being dropped off at the right location this time as a huge gate that looks like a theme park entrance has been put up. The ticket price had increased six-fold and the ticket sellers sneakily sold us a 10 yuan electric cart ticket that only drove us about 500 meters to the Wall entrance (for the steep couple of kilometers of hike ahead). Despite being a holiday weekend, the Hushan section hardly had any visitors and we had no problem getting good photos during our walk along the wall. While shorter than most other sections near Beijing, Hushan has by far the most steep section which was quite the workout. The Wall also parallels the North Korean border and we got a nice bird’s eye view of Sinuiju from the top tower (although most of it was an empty field except for a small village).

Visiting the Great Wall at Dandong was a really impressive excursion. Especially the nearby Border to North Korea makes this trip special to me. Hiking on top of the Great Wall and climbing up to the top is quite exhausting but worthy. If you have enough time you may walk back along the North Korean Borderline. Thereafter my recommendation would be, to have boat tour at the The Yalu River.

This section of the Great Wall is not ancient or even very old but it's quite beautiful in every season -- even winter. Don't get stuck out there at night or in winter. We asked a taxi to wait for us but he said, No, don't worry, there are other taxis. There are no taxis at night in winter. We asked the staff at the entrance to call us a taxi but they said, No, walk to the bus stop. We waited at the bus stop but no bus or taxi came. We heard dogs barking, maybe wolves in the distance, thought of the tiger scene from The Interview. Finally a nice old guy driving a tuktuk or frog, as they say in Chinese, rescued us. Riding in the back was cold but he let us sit on his motorcycle gloves to keep warm and he drove that thing with no gloves. What a heroic guy!
