Fall in love with Brittany and the Britons, France and both the Breton languages and learn to love the sea
Okt 2017
At 14, my parents had the excellent idea to send me for one month to Paris in a family with young people roughly my age, to become really fluent in French, a language I has started to learn at school at the age of 7. The family was recommended by the director of my school, a priest and one of the oldest sons of the French family had just started to study theology. What nobody had told us was that the family spent their holidays in a very old family house on the minuscule island of Bréhat. The older brother drove me from Paris in his 2Cv to the little fisherman’s village of Paimpol, from where we took the « ferry », an old fisherman’s boat, to tiny Bréhat, where at the time only 2 farmers were allowed to have a tractor, and they secured ‘public transport’ when the ferry arrived, during wintertime only 80 natives lived on the island. We had arrived early in the morning and my new brother took me to inspect a 18 feet wooden boat which he inherited from his uncle a local fisherman. It was low tide and then the island had at least quadrupled in sizé the difference of the water level at high time is 12 meters. So most of the time the little boats, were standing on dry land and the window of high tide, when the boats could move either by rowing or under sail was small, my bro took me for the first time sailing on the Atlantic for about an hour’ since that day I do love the sea, while knowing to respect her, because she is a very dangerous and capricious lover, After supper bro suggested to walk on the only path to the end of the island to enjoy sunset, It was high tide, so I came at a spot where when you kneeled on the path, you could touch the sea at each side of the path, suite extraordinary experience, I continued walking and when moving upwards, making a little turn, I saw to my utmost astonishment exactly what the artist who took this picture saw. At the right you see the path I just mentioned and then the rocks and a tiny lighthouse. I remember my emotion as if it was yesterday. I can even smell the sea, hear the wind blowing and the sound of the waver breaking against the rocks. When I saw this pictures in the suggestions to write a comment, I didn’t have to read the title, nor the place and immidiately started writing this review. When Bro sent me there without telling wat to expect, he gave me one of the most brilliant gifts I ever received, the artist who took the picture will forgive me to share with you something a picture cannot show, at least, I never saw one, but during a short while, depending on the sun (given the shades I think this picture was taken in the morning, the sun coming in from the east ans what I want to share is a phenomenon that is best visible at sunset, the other elements are excellent, the sky is blue with little to no clouds and the sea is calm an dark blue, in my situation the ephemerides were ideal : the rocks dress up in delicate pink, it is breathtaking and unforgettable. I went to the light House and set down until night. Back in the tiny village I was told the name of the lighthouse « Phare du Paon »w I would go for a Peacock rather than a Phaisent, although both translations are correct and are both subspecies os the same category. I must have asked almost all permanent locals, but never got a concluding answer wether it was « Paon » because of the Red Rocks « roches rouges » changed so beautifully their colours, but I always stayed with Peacock because of the change of colour, the fact that it could be dangerous to approach, but most of all for the poetic aspect. If ever you are in the area, nowadays preferably in May’/June or September, and take your time to enjoy this exceptional beauty. PS pers : PYQ si par miracle tu lis ceci, fais moi signe stp, merci!

Ile de Brehat is a gem that has developed in a relatively well known spot nowadays

A few advices:
* Rent bike on site, do not book via internet unless it is really the high season
* a bio bakery is near the “phare du paon”, bread is awesome
* take you time but start early to get your picnic near the phare du Paon

Enjoy!

Walking through the island to the phare du paon is a very enjoyable experience: it is about 3-4 km from the docks, but you walk through the village, fields, flowers along the path, meadows and arrive at the lighthouse where you can picnic. Beautiful view of the coast with the huge rocks. Make sure you have water with you if it is a sunny day. You can also rent a bicycle if you don't want to walk all the way there.

I and my son after lunch in Bourg walk the straight forward trail across Sud Ile to the bridge across the causeway to Nord Ile and onward past many delightful houses and vistas. Finally arriving at the lighthouse carefully crossing the storm damaged causeway, the lighthouse is locked up but the views are superb and worth the walk or cycle too it!

Our third visit to the island and we decided to walk to the farthest lighthouse. Well worth it for the stunning views. The weather was fantastic.

The lighthouse as such is not very special and can not be visited. The tour to the lighthouse or only part of it is the main attraction of this beautiful colorful island.

Many people who take the ferry over just walk to one of the many restaurants and then return. The more adventurous walk to the tiny bridge that connects to the less-populated northern island and walk to this lighthouse. The islands are simply beautiful and the walk is a delight. So getting to the lighthouse is definitely worthwhile. If you're into cycling, you can bike almost to the foot of the lighthouse along car-free roads. Truly a mini-paradise.

If you are cycling the island on a daytrip, this is worth the visit. On foot, I wouldn't bother. There are several other more nearby places.

Peacock Lighthouse does NOT describe this lighthouse well. It is not beautiful and is not open to the public. It is at the [northmost] end of the island atop an outcropping of massive rocks, with a reinforced rock decking at the base of the lighthouse. The road leading to the lighthouse has almost been completely washed away by the ocean.

All that is trivial to an opportunity to walk the north isle and all its wild beauty with the end destination being to stand at the island's tip and look out at England across La Manche, or the islands northeast -- Guernsey and Jersey. The Phare du Paon, like all the sights on Ile-de-Brehat should be experienced.

You should plan 4 hours for a walk from the docks and return.
