We had dinner on Denman and it really had a neighbourhood feel, unlike the commercial vibe of the more well-known Robson St. We felt safe and will definitely return next time we’re in town.

Discovering Denman Street (Village) after winding up a Stanley Park adventure, we consider ourselves fortunate to immerse ourselves in yesterday's 70's counter-culture 50 years later. It has blossomed into a foodie's mecca. The world is not all meat and potatoes, after all. Smell the wafting scents of those exotic spices issuing forth from ethnic shops!

Remember, once upon a time a "lobster" bug was considered poor man's food (maybe "slum"gullion?) and today, it tops the restaurant list for the most desirable and highest priced of options. Keep an open mind and try to push outside your comfort zone. The world is much bigger and it even has room for the novices.

We like Denman Street and next year, when we return, we will sample as many international ethnic eateries as we possibly can. And will make a concerted effort to seek out and photograph all the marvelous murals that are defining the character of Denman Village.

This is a happening street. Many small and quaint restaurants offer foods from various countries including Italy, Japan, Greece, Iran etc. Plus you can get your regular quick serve places.
Walk down to Beach Avenue and admire the Pacific Ocean while you listen to street performance. Also a great area to rent and ride bicycles.

I admit slight surprise at seeing Denman Street listed as an “attraction” on TripAdvisor. As a corridor and part of Vancouver’s West End, it’s a fine street and neighbourhood, but it really isn’t that noteworthy in terms of “something to do.” As others have pointed out, this area is home to a multicultural slumgullion of restaurants, a few boutique shops and bike rentals (just gotta say it!) . . . there really isn’t much more to it.

Beyond the stew of different eateries, most tend to view Denman Street as a mere adjunct to the much more popular English Bay OR as the place to rent a bike before embarking on an adventure through Stanley Park and the Vancouver Seawall. Granted, geography plays a big role in this view, but so too do social attitudes. Many of us have been consciously (or unconsciously) taught to look towards the bigger attractions elsewhere or to see Denman within the context of the larger West End. When we do that, Denman tends to become nothing more than a footnote. We might tip our cap to a Russian or Indian restaurant, but the social culture gets downplayed and ignored. I’m guilty of this; I still largely see Denman as unremarkable, despite the fact that it actually has a number of remarkable establishments along its route. Indeed, when this happens, Denman Street’s identity gets obscured.

Now, while I acknowledge that Denman Street is more than a means of getting from A to C, I won’t go as far as “Inside Vancouver” and declare Denman a “destination worth exploring on its own” because, in my view, it isn’t. It has a number of great eateries, and is recognized as the West End’s busiest artery (thanks, Denman Place Mall!), but it ultimately lacks the atmosphere of a Robson Street or a Granville Street. In short, Denman definitely isn’t Vancouver’s answer to Las Vegas, as one person wrote (that doesn’t say much about Vegas!). Nevertheless, because it is so close to other major attractions, you might want to check it out for a brief moment or two. If not, well, I won’t blame you ;)

This is just another street full of stores of various kinds wanting to take your money. Vancouver pretends its special but it isn't.

Visited Stanley Park & Capilano Suspension Bridge, then took a stroll on Denman St. There are a lot of restaurants & bike rentals to choose from, except gift shops. Ended up going to ‘G2 Canada in Chinatown. You will definitely beat the high end prices & they have quite of a selection!

This is the commercial strip for the far end of the West End, serving English Bay and the apartments along the park. Lots of places to eat and drink coffee. Some shopping.

This unit of Starbucks is conveniently located at English Bay (a world famous bathing beach in the West End neighborhood of Vancouver). Both the staff and patrons appear to be very polite and friendly. I can imagine that during the summer months it would be near impossible to find seating in this coffee house.

This street does have shops, restaurants, and bike rentals - all those things you may wish to stock up on before starting a sea wall hike, or simply a long walk. But, it doesn't have a flavour or atmosphere to make it being considered a neighbourhood on its own.
Don't go out of your way to visit this street, but if you are in the neighbourhood.......
