My husband and I enjoyed learning about Ensenada and Baja Norte history on our visit here. They helpfully provided booklets of the display signs translated into english that we could carry with us throughout them museum. There were several families also moving through the displays with us and the kids really seemed to enjoy it! Does not take long to move through each of the displays, probably about an hour. There are also lovely gardens to stroll through. In the same building is a beautiful old bar with intricate floor tiling and very friendly bartenders! Would recommend as a fun, informative stop during your time in Ensenada

Walk for the Cruise port - go straight to main street - turn right and go across street to large white ornate building entrance is near the middle - Cultural Center. Pay small fee to get in. Lots of stairs up and down and work your way through the Museum.

Very interesting to see and understand a little about the history of Ensenda and the area.

Worth your time to see.

While exploring Ensenada for the first time, I saw a marker for this museum on Google maps and my wife and I made a pin GB of trying to find it. After walking around for a while, we went in a side gate after passing the open air theatre (under construction). We walked around the beautiful garden and observed the statues, plants, and plaques that talked about historical figures of Ensenada (in Spanish). We left and walked around the front of the building to discover this wonderful museum. The man at the desk spoke no English but, after passing a very low admission fee, have us a binder with information I English on the exhibits. Nearly all of the signs for each display was in Spanish and English.
I am so excited we visited. There are a series of Baja missions we weren't aware of. We got to learn so much about the history of Ensenada and its people. I can't believe they're as me to offer so much I this museum with such a low admission cost. There are MANY rooms and stations in the museum.
I do wish my Spanish was a bit better. The gentleman at the desk had stories and anecdotes about the building he wanted to tell me but I missed a lot of what he had to say because I struggled with interpretation. All the same, it was fantastic experience. The trinkets sold in the gift shop are great.

This history museum that is a short stroll (/2 block) from the cruise pier tells the story of Ensenada from the original Indians- (beads, baskets, pots) , through the missionaries (religious objects), to the current archeological digs in the area (a new photo exhibit of cave art). The 2 awesome Chinese stone lions at the front gate suggest the Chinese influence in the past and present. The stucco white exterior belies the dark, crammed interior. This is my second visit and have found that at least one room had changed in 2 years. There is a small gift shop at the entry staffed often by volunteers and a minimal entrance fee.

This little museum doesn't a very good job of presenting the history of Ensenada and the region. The exhibits are not elaborate, but the documentation is very strong and there's an English translation accompanying the Spanish narrative.

We were presented an English guide (notebook) when we entered and found it to be useful in guiding our tour through the museum.

We were visiting midday during the week, so it was not crowded and we could stroll through, reading the descriptions of the artifacts and taking our leisurely time.

We really enjoyed this little museum about the history of Ensenada. Had some nice exhibits & a gift shop. The man who checked us in was very friendly too:-) I think it was a couple dollars donation per person. Definitely a nice safe alternative to shopping or the bars. We had shopped in the morning, then had lunch on the boat, then walked to the museum:-)

The photos posted by others are of the first half of this wonderful little museum, just a half block off the main drag. Excellent displays and descriptions of the paleontology and anthropology of Baja California, including huge mammoth bones, lots of spear points and arrows, and baskets, dioramas, and explanations in Spanish and English. We enjoyed that half, which is more carefully curated than the second half, but we loved the jail cells in the other half, which are still a work in progress (which somehow made them even more charming). You will need to use a flashlight (most people have one on their cell phones) to inspect some of the old jail cells, which, in a few, display artwork by the resident inmates from years ago. The museum must cater to school groups as well as tourists, because one cell is unexpectedly and delightfully filled with dozens of transformer action figures, something to bring a smile to any visitor's face. A couple of the cells contain old photographs, and some old letters, still being curated at the time of our visit. Really, if you can take a half hour away from the craziness of the shops and bars and street vendors, we think you will love this free museum. Note that some of the reviews have this museum confused with the one at the old casino at the other end of town. The two are totally different.

If you're from southern California, you'll notice many similarities in the history of the region. It was a not crowded and most things were printed in both English and Spanish.

The museum walks you through the history of Baja from prehistory to the native people to the arrival and live under the missionaries. It's just $2 US to get in and worth the hour it takes. Most signs are bilingual Spanish/English.
The gardens outside of the museum are worth a visit as well. There are well maintained and have a nice little cactus and succulent collection.
