The caves were just so cool! Much larger than expected. The tour lasted an hour and the guide was very knowledgeable. I learned a lot about stalagmite/stalactite formation which really rocks (sorry).
I survived in shorts and t-shirt, though those of us who are not Canadian may want to dress up :)

Impressive natural cave. 500 steps down so 500 up.
Excellent guide, sorry don't know his name who was open to questions in Italian and English.

About a 30 minute drive from Trieste is the Grotta Gigante. This is a truly unique, amazing, massive cave that photos don’t do justice to. Be aware that there are 500 steps down and then up. If one is fit, this is not a problem as the guides stop periodically going down and try not to hurry you going back up. If you have some issues with your feet, knees, or shortness of breath, etc. then it might be better to take a trip instead to Postojna Cave in Slovenia which has a train to take visitors around. In terms of impressive size, Grotta Gigante is well worth the visit if you can do the steps. From entrance into the cave to exit, the whole visit lasts just a little over an hour.

Amazing size and interesting. One hour tour well paced so 500 steps down and back up comfortable. Guide speaks on Italian then plays English audio which was fine for us.

Took the bus from the town centre" short walk to the caves. Don't be put off by the number of steps. The cavern is massive. The guide explained all the features with clarity and allowed plenty of time for slow walkers and photo taking. Worth it.

This huge cave is beautiful, uniquely large due to its location in the Karst and created by a river that used to run through it. There are hourly tours in Italian with brief summaries in English. The cost is 12 euros, though this is another one of those attractions that is free if you have the FVG card, which makes economic sense if you are staying several days in the region. You will go down more than 500 steps, the cave is well lit, the stairs and handrails are in good condition. The cave is constantly cool, a refreshing break on a hot day. You can get here by local bus from Trieste, the journey provides lovely views of the countryside and sea.

Incredible is the word that comes to mind when I think of this cave..definitly reccomend a trip to visit, especially during the summertime where you can feel the coolness of the cave compared to the outside temeratures. This is Nature at it's finest work. A great place to take kids too!

You can only view via hourly guided tour in Italian and English. So the guide speaks in Italian for about 20-25 minutes and then gives an explanation in English 2-3 minutes. Hmmm, so come prepared with questions if you want more detailed information and not the quick basic in English. You will feel rushed thru, spent majority of the time stepping rather than admiring. It is a rush tour, and not cheap 12 euro pp.

Grotta Gigante is the world's largest accessible cave and the
second largest natural chamber in the world. It could contain
the dome of St Peter's. I was amazed by its size. Tours take
place at hourly intervals lead by well informed guides. Be
warned that the cave is 11C all year round so it will feel cold
in hot weather. Also be prepared to walk down 500 steps and
walk up another 500. There are vast numbers of stalactites
and stalagmites forming weird, strange shapes.
At the centre of the cave there are two plastic tubes
containing wires, which hang from the top of the cave.
They are the equipment installed in the cave to accurately
measure seismic shifts undisturbed by surface noise and
air currents.
I strongly recommend visiting the cave for an experience
you will not forget. It was without doubt the highlight of
my stay in this part of Italy.

buongiorno a tutti,
mia figlia ha 4 anni ed è abituata a camminare anche in montagna.
Pensate possa essere alla portata di bambini di quest'età o è meglio aspettare?
