Rather blows you away. Small country town with a monumental show off palazzo built by a cardinal - you can see how the Reformation came along! It looks imposing from outside, a conventional square palazzo, but inside is even grander with an ingenious circular courtyard. The views are stunning. The ‘offering’ is slightly austere, you buy a ticket and wander off, with most of the place to yourself, and room after room. There are no National Trust style displays with volunteers to explain things. A few signs in Italian and English, but hard to imagine the rooms in their prime. What was also striking was the uniformity across the house, as it the house was closed up shortly after it was completed in the 16th century and never touched since.

Sadly the gardens were closed when I visited, but the house was well worth a visit.

An incredibly beautiful and magnifically preserved villa from the 16th century as well as breath taking fountains in the gardens.
The garden house can only be visited one morning a month if you want to.
Price was 12€ per person. Definitely worth it.

I can’t say much for the villa… we did go through it, it was a beautiful renaissance villa. But also the 10th on our trip. The reason for our visit was the gardens and they did not disappoint. These gorgeous sculpted gardens with flowing waterfalls was like escaping into another world! I would recommend visiting the villa to anyone who goes to Tuscany.

A beautiful renaissance palace, quite well maintained. Nice frescos, unique circular courtyard. A big garden with fountains(not working nowadays).

This would be unbelievably impressive and stand out even in Rome, but Caprarola? Well, that’s Italy. A huge building with marvelous rooms ( even the stairwell ) filled with endless frescoes and lovely ceilings, perhaps more than in any other city I have seen and that includes many, many cities in Italian. We spent at least two hours here ( and would have spent more, but we were already behind schedule ) and took hundreds of pictures. We often stood transfixed at the scale and amazingly the quality at that scale. There are buildings that are huge with huge amounts of frescoes, etc., but the quality of what you see is mediocre. It can still be fun, but what you see at the Villa Farnese is simply astounding. After the building, we went to the park and even my wife who has heart problems and MS had to see it. It was really great, particularly the buildings at the top. It was so good that we were going to add a second visit at the end of this trip, but we pooped out and that’s a shame. There are places you can see a second time. This is a place you can see over and over. Go and you will undoubtedly agree.

If you're in the vicinity of Caprarola (or indeed anywhere near Viterbo), definitely worth a visit. The main attraction in the main building is the frescoes, not just in the rooms (and up the wonderful spiral staircase), but also the large courtyard. Once you've had your fill of frescoes, head out into the big gardens, with an array of fountains leading up the hill to a second (closed) building. Much to our surprise (as Brits) there is no cafe or catering of any kind onsite (so take your own water).
If you're visiting from Viterbo or somewhere else nearby, the drive to Caprarola is also part of the pleasure, with beautiful landscapes and other hillside towns on the way.

We were able to park right next to the palace but were already in the overflow car park although I have no idea where everyone else was as we only saw one other couple in the almost three hours that we were there. The palace is in a superb location with quite incredible views and well outside the hustle of Rome for a busy cardinal!

I had heard of Farnese but didn't know any detail - Alessandro Farnese, who had most of the work done on the palace - was made a cardinal at 14 and ended his long career as Vice Chancellor. He used his position to amass wealth on a staggering scale and his income was 1% of the entire GDP of Catholic Europe in the sixteenth century. On the plus side though he was a notable patron of the arts and sciences and an antiquarian as well as being a doting father.

The palace stayed in the Farnese family from 1521 until 1731 when the Bourbons of Naples inherited it. in 1941 it was appropriated by the state and has been publicly owned since then.

Entrance was €5 each, cash only of course, and we were then given free reign to explore. I'm not usually into these kinds of buildings but the art work and design of this place was stunning. Probably not surprising considering the resources but wealth and taste don't always go together. The map room was certainly my favourite, a world map and then continental maps, based on the latest scientific knowledge at the time.

The design of the palace was based on a planned fortress so it was hexagonal in shape with a circular courtyard. The route through was excellent with detailed explanations in every room and we just took our time wandering through. The staircase was particularly amazing but very difficult to photograph without a tripod. After a couple of hours we exited the building into the gardens.

The first part of the garden was a formal box hedge design and we didn't spend long there but the High Garden consisted of a 5-10 minute walk through beech forest before reaching another ornate building. Anywhere else this building would have been impressive on its own but here it was just a summerhouse. There was long water feature and more hedges along with lots of classical statues. As we were walking back we saw other visitors for the first time!

This is a stunning building with magnificent architecture, fascinating frescos and beautiful gardens. It was built and decorated by some of the greatest artists of the renaissance for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. It is a bit sad the way it is kept, especially the gardens. Yet it is absolutely worth a visit

What an incredible Palazzo. When you walk up to the Palace, you would never guess how amazing the inside is. Frescoes in every room on walls and ceilings. The hexagon outside hides a round piazza in the inside. very unusual and wonderful to see.
The amount of frescoes are nearly to many to take them all in. The room with the maps of all the continents of the world is impressive.
If you have the chance to go and visit the gardens with the wonderful fountains and waterworks, you really should.

I've wanted to visit this exquisite Palazzo for as long as I can remember however it was never convenient for me on past trips but this time I was determined. I left Bracciano as the sun was coming up and the insanely heavy fog caused me to pull over for a bit because I couldn't see 3 meters in front of me and with the curves of the roads, I figured better safe than dead. The parking at the Scuderie just adjacent to the Palazzo was open and parking was easy. I was the first to arrive right at opening and that gave me the opportunity to take the photos I had planned on. By far the most glorious staircase I have ever seen in my life. The gardens were open which was an added bonus. Some of the most beautiful frescoes too.
