Abbey Blanche has now been closed to public access due to safety concerns with the structure and grounds.

This location is now closed to the public due to concerns over safety of the building and grounds. Occasionally exhibits are shown in on of the halls adjacent to the main building. These however tend to be only advertised locally

Privileged visit to former Cistertian Abbey

After many years of driving past the deserted abbey and wondering what lay inside, we were lucky to spot an advert from the Office de Tourisme, Mortain offering occasional guided tours this summer.
This tour is not for the faint hearted who have no knowledge of monastic life and a poor grasp of French. You will see the cloisters, the abbey church and the chapter house but the bulk of the visit is a very erudite talk by the guide about the history of the buildings and the people who occupied them, with significant asides into Norman history and the genaeology of the rulers of this part of the world.
If you are an avid reader of Brother Cadfael and have a reasonable interest in church architecture (and reasonable French) you will enjoy this!

An eerie place and quite deserted but a a reminder of great times gone by. Combine with a visit to the Grande Cascade.

It looks closed and deserted but park in the main courtyard and wander round and you have found a gem.

Very strange place but worth a look if you are passing

All in working order with the roof in place, which is unusual. I'd like to know more about it, but a rather odd but nice place

grand old buildings with plenty of history

We often visit this abbey and try to keep it alive by visiting it. It is such a shame that it is not being maintained and is gradually falling into disrepair, as it is an important part of the history and spiritual heritage of the area. If you want to extend your visit, you can explore the woodland and old walled garden round the back of the abbey and climb up the hill to the statue of Our Lady at the top. Be careful not to fall off any of the steep drops at the edge of the cliff!

Beautiful but sad!

We have visited the Abbaye several times and each time we see something new. Yes, as a previous reviewer has said, it is sad, dusty, dirty with cobwebs, but as the photos show, there is beauty in the sadness. We love the peace and quiet of the building, the architecture and the story it tells. The building linked to the Abbaye has seen numerous uses from manufacturing, as accommodation, and a hospital.
We hope at some time in the future it will be treated to the love it deserves.
