We visited the abbey (and the attached Museum) during one of the usual guided tours on Sunday afternoon, integrating the (few) knowledge we already had with the informed and brilliant explanation of our guide. Here are the conclusions I was able to reach.
Nonantola, founded in the remote 752 AD, is one of the great abbeys of the European Middle Ages (it will come to count more than 800 monks at the beginning of the 9th century; a record number). Above all, its role emerges with the Emperor Charlemagne and his successors, who also attribute important political-diplomatic roles to the abbey. Furthermore, the abbey becomes the cornerstone of the "Romea Nonantolana" route, which connects Germany to Italy. Only at the end of the 11th century did the abbey lose importance, due to the growing powers of the neighboring municipalities, Modena and Bologna.
The extraordinary archive remains witness to this importance, as it preserves, among other things, 4,500 parchments, of which (an exceptional feature) as many as 131 prior to the year 1000. Instead, the products of the scriptorium have been dispersed; of the 259 volumes certainly attributable to the abbey, only 3 remain in it.
All these documents are available to scholars, and are partly visible to the public in the adjacent, very interesting museum.
Today, the convent has substantially disappeared, as well as essential parts of it such as the chapter room, the refectory and the scriptorium; we can only rely on the church to try to imagine the layout of the abbey in the first centuries of its life. Moreover, the abbey was also heavily modified in the Baroque period, then restored in the twentieth century; some photos in the Nonantola museum show the difference - for example, in the facade - between the “before” and the “after”.
However, they are authentic: the Romanesque portal, the apses, the structure of the internal naves and the admirable, monumental crypt, one of the largest in Europe.
On the whole we can however affirm that the architectural and artistic value of this abbey, although considerable, is inferior to its historical importance in the pre-communal Middle Ages; which - as we have tried to show - is truly leading.

We visited the cathedral on our honeymoon.

It has been partly destroyed in the earthquake. The cathedral is therefor under resturation and empty. You can still enter, and seeing a cathedral this way was awesome and I will never again experience that again!

There is also a museum that is very worth while to visit.

We were lucky in being able to visit the abbey right before it closed for restoration, after the damages it suffered from the earthquake in 2012. The church went through a courageous restoration in the early 1900s, which stripped out all the baroque additions from the 1600s and brought back the splendid simplicity of the original Romanesque structure. The attached museum has some remarkable parchments from the 1100s and other art pieces from churches even more severely damaged from the earthquake - all notes are in Italian, only three boards give a summary in English. Depending from the time of day, the staff (volunteers) can be available to kindly give you a partial tour. It is certainly worth a visit if you are in the area (a fascinating insight in the rivalry between the Holy Roman Empire and the Papacy in the High Middle Ages, all described in Italian), however check their web sire for opening times (closed at lunch time) and the status of the restoration (the church could be closed perhaps for a couple of years).

In the year one thousand was built this church one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in Europe. The beautiful church and the beautiful garden on the rear aisles are worth a trip to the medieval town of Nonantola. The fortified tower houses an interesting museum with one of the most interesting stories documented: the Partecipanza, perhaps the only ancient form of common property use of agricultural land still exists today, born by a grant from the Abbot of Nonantola the population in exchange for construction of the fortified walls of the Abbey.
