A memorial to the Canadians supported by British tanks in the taking of the Gothic Line. I stayed in a seaside town called Riccione. That was my home base for a week if touring Canadian battlefields. There are numerous Commonwealth War Graves in the area. The largest is at Coriano Ridge.

My father, an American GI, fought with the 5th Army, going through the Gothic Line. We were excited in visiting the area, walking in Dad’s footsteps so to speak. We hired a Gothic Line expert for the day. He took us to dugouts along the Line. It was a strong defensive line, but the Allies broke through. My dad was wounded and captured in the fighting. For those with an interest, this is a worthwhile visit.

If you know your history you should know the importance of this site. Quite impressive view makes you understand why the Germans had this defense line and why the Allied Forces fought so fiercely to reach and finally break it.

The memorial is easy to find: follow Strada di Montechiaro until it meets Strada per Pozzo and then turn left towards Tavullia. Follow the Strada per Pozzo around a 90 degree turn and you'll find the memorial, ringed by very tall cypress trees, on the left hand side.
We visited after paying our respects to an uncle at the Montecchio War Cemetery about 4km away. The cemetery is quite well publicized thanks to the excellent websites run by the Commonwealth Graves Commission and Veterans Affairs Canada but we learned about the memorial rather by accident. It's well worth taking the time to visit. It's incredibly well-maintained and provides a panoramic vantage point for understanding why the Gothic Line was so strategic and difficult to penetrate. The plaques and interpretive panels explain the battle. As Canadians, it was a very strange feeling to be driving through the Italian countryside and all of a sudden see a little roadside park ringed with red and white Canadian flags waving in the breeze. It's so moving to see how the sacrifices made by those soldiers are remembered and respected to this day. Well done Tavullia!
According to a story on page 9 of the Sep. 8, 1997 edition of the Toronto Star, this memorial was dedicated on Sep. 7, 1997. 80 Canadian veterans and a crowd of 300 local people attended the ceremony, along with Canadian Defence Minister Art Eggleton. Local townspeople raised the equivalent of a hundred thousand Canadian dollars to build the memorial. It honours the Canadian soldiers who fought to break the German Gothic Line in August and September 1944. For a year, the Allies, often led by Canadians, had been driving from Sicily up the calf of the Italian boot. It was mountain country, marked by east-west ridges. This particular ridge was part of the Gothic Line. The Canadians were told to break the line, take the ridge, and drive the Germans north. They did.

Hi Tommy
My father was with the Perth Regiment (Canada) and fought in Italy - Gothic Line. His name, Roy Saunders, is listed on the Q204 Memorial. It is a life goal for me to see this memorial and I'm hoping to do so May 2018. How did you go about finding an English-speaking WWII history guide to take you to this memorial? We will be on a bus tour that will stay 2 nights in San Martino in Campo and I would like to take a day to visit the memorial. According to Goggle Maps it is a 2 hour drive from San Martino in Campo to Tavullia. We would need someone to drive us from San Martino in Campo and back again. Any information that you could provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lynda

We did not go on the May 2018 trip that I mentioned. Since I sent the question, I have found the perfect organized bus tour with GoAhead Tours that is offering in 2019 a Canadian WWII History: The Italian Campaign tour. I'm so excited to go on this tour as one of the destinations is the Q204 Memorial. They are offering this tour as it is the 75 anniversary of Italian Campaign.
Thanks for answering my question anyway.
Lynda
