Incredible Alpine Experience in Nevada
Jun 2021
Great Basin does an amazing job of allowing you to experience an alpine setting in our own country. You don't have to go to Switzerland or even hike great heights. The NPS has a road that will allow you to drive to 9,800 feet. From there it is a short 2.7 mile 400 vertical foot hike on the Alpine Lakes Loop to see an incredible forest, breath taking meadows, a snow covered rocky peak and two beautiful alpine lakes. This was the first hike my wife and I made in the park and it total set the tone for an amazing experience. Yes the scenery at the top and the lakes was beautiful but enjoy the lush green creeks and the mountain meadows. It was a little tough adjusting to the altitude but this is one of the least vertical in the alpine area. Also we had an incredible experience here with dear hiking in the late afternoon.

Finally, a small tip which may add distance but not elevation. Park at your first lot and start the Wheeler Peak trail as it is level to Stella Lake. From there you can go to Teresa Lake but you will need to return the same way as the Loop will not take you back to the peak parking area.

Beautiful Peaceful

This is a beautiful hike. There is a climb near the beginning which was a bit rough but we took it slowly and just enjoyed where we were. Trail is very clearly marked with orange tags on trees. We walked pass the streams that already had ice on them. Saw a group of wild turkeys sunning themselves. The lakes themselves are nothing great. We were not expecting to,love this park this much but it really is an amazing, beautiful place. It’s out of the way but that’s what makes it so great you almost have the park to yourself.

Lake Stella

Great Basin has no entrance fee. It's a great park to visit away from the crowds. The Alpine Loop Trail takes you by Lake Stella. It is so beautiful. The climb is a slow ascent on an easy to follow path past streams and little waterfalls. Bring bug spray. The flies bite. We had a wonderful time because we brought bug spray :).

We were using Great Basin national park as a stopover but it deserves more than that. This hike had some fantastic scenery and the park is great.

We saw both Stella & Teresa Lakes and distant view of the Glacier on the hike.

The hike lasted about 2 hours and was not too difficult. We walked through some beautiful meadows before seeing Stella lake. Then continued on to Teresa Lake. We got to view a long distance view of the Glacier in the distance.

Pretty Lakes

We added the Alpine Lakes Loop Hike onto the end of our Bristlecone Pine Hike and Glacier Hike. It made the total hike about 6.5 miles and took us 4.5 hours. We ate lunch at Teresa Lake. Watch for wild turkeys and deer on this portion of the hike.

Beautiful but challenging
Jul 2018 • Keluarga
Normally I wouldn't say a three-mile hike would be rough but this is at 10,000 feet and that takes it out of you.

The trail is well defined but rough at times. My younger son and teenage daughter both tripped on a rock or tree root. A bit better attention would have helped prevent that.

The lakes aren't all that spectacular but the hike takes you into nature and we did come across deer.

Take plenty of water and keep an eye on the weather. It can change quickly.

Great Scenery the Whole Time

This was a beautiful hike and not too challenging for kids. The lakes are really clear and the weather even in July was perfect, around 70 degrees.

Two beautiful alpine lakes
Jul 2018 • Sendiri
I did not do the complete loop, but hiked separately to the two lakes. I hiked to Teresa lake from the Bristlecone trailhead, and to Stella lake from the Wheeler Peak trailhead. Both hikes were enjoyable, especially the Wheeler Peak trail when it goes through a grove of quaking aspens. The setting of the two lakes is beautiful being surrounded by high mountains. And the water is calm and clear.

This is another enjoyable hike to do in Great Basin National Park.

Alpine Lakes in Nevada - Doesn't get any better
Jun 2018 • Teman
My wife (68) and I (66) have been camping at Great Basin NP for over 20 years nearly every year and sometimes twice a year. The Bristlecone hike is a must do but so is the loop to the alpine lakes which you can take from either direction - that is, from Stella Lake and then around and back to the Wheeler CG or from the Bristlecone trail to the lakes and then back to the Wheeler CG. If you are going to summit Wheeler the best place to start is from the trailhead off the Scenic Drive but if you are in the campground already you can get the summit trail from any of the Bristlecone or alpine loop trails also.
