Incredible Views all around
Jun 2021
Great views even if you don't reach the summit. My wife and enjoyed this hike although neither of us made the summit. It is 4.3 mile, 3,000 vertical foot hike that ends on top of Wheeler Peak. The entire trip is between 10,000-13,000 feet in elevation so the air is thin. My wife made 2.7 miles and nearly 11,000 feet just shy of the tree line. I went just past 3.7 miles and around 12,000 feet. The views along the ridge above the tree line were amazing. That was as high as this Floridian has hiked and every ten feet I seemed to need to catch my breath.

While the views from the ridge were amazing, I have to say the hike up was some of the most incredible alpine scenery. Whether walking through Aspen forest or meadows that provide amazing view, this is a great trail. I fully recommend that you hike and only go as high as you feel your body will allow you. Finally, even at these elevations you simply never know what kind of wildlife you will encounter. On the way back down, I had a chance encounter with a Great Basin Rattlesnake. It was more scared of me than I of it. I asked the rangers to help me identify because I had never seen these markings before and the rangers said it was incredibly rare to encounter a snake at that altitude. Still I have the pictures to prove it.

Worth Every Step

We got lucky and there was very little wind at the top. Did several other hikes in the park to get acclimated since we come from sea level. At age 67 I was not sure how I would fair but we left early and keep a steady pace and found that the hike was not as bad as anticipated.

The Summit Trail goes for about a mile over to Stella Lake. Just before Stella Lake, .10 miles, the trail starts to go UP!!! From the Summit Trail Trailhead, it is 4.2 miles to Wheeler Peak. It is a challenge and was our first "13er". Wheeler Peak is the second highest peak in the state of NV at 13,044 feet. The trailhead is at 10,003 feet with an overall gain of 3,041 feet to the summit. You can see the curvature of the earth from the summit. It is a very interesting and diverse environment. From the desert floor, you have a mountain range shooting up to over 13,000 feet!!!

Our first time on the Summit Trail was for the Full Moon Hike to Stella Lake. The trail was not bad. The second hike was using the same trail and then continuing on to Wheeler Peak. About a mile after Stella Lake, the trail becomes brutal...you are above tree line and the altitude goes up quite quickly from about 10,000 feet. To over 23,000 feet. You are exposed to all the elements and it becomes more rocky. If you do it, take plenty of water, snacks, and start early as it takes a good portion of the day!

Nice trail for first 2 miles but becomes brutal up to the summit. Well worth the pain for the spectacular view!
