Beautiful Flowers but best to hike down.
Jun 2021
On our last day we decided to try some of the lower elevation hikes. The trade off is it is easier to breathe but it is hotter. We started at the lowest point of Upper Lehman, 0.4 miles below the trailhead, not realizing that there was a parking lot for hiker's cars at the trailhead. We walked about a mile up the trail and then turned around as we had not planned to go back to the top of the mountain. We had wanted to just enjoyed the lower elevations of the park

It is steep and unfortunately we stopped just short of reaching the creek. However, in mid June, this is the most amazing hike with a trail covered in flowers. My wife had some allergy problems but we both said it was a beautiful hike. The pictures will not due the flowers justice as they were blooming all over.

Despite the incredible flowers, this is a heck of hike without the typical elevation scenery. If you wanted to 3,000 vertical feet, I'd recommend Wheeler Peak over this. The only way I would recommend the entire hike is to go down from Wheeler to Upper Lehman with a car at the bottom.

Lower Lehman CG to Bristlecone Pine Grove
Agt 2018 • Keluarga
My family of four (including 10 & 13 year olds) hiked this trail roundtrip from Lower Lehman CG to Bristlecone Pine grove due to the fact that our RV was over the 24 foot limit allowed on the Wheeler Peak drive. It is a strenuous and beautiful hike that is lightly traveled. The elevation gain was approximately 2,700 feet 13-14 miles or so. Wear solid hiking shoes as the trail is rocky and rough and leave early/mid-morning to ensure a timely return to the campground. Overall, this was a great hike in relative solitude to a beautiful destination!

CG to CG - great hike but strenuous

Wife & I have done several times. Usually from Wheeler CG to Upper Lehman CG and let me tell you that is a b**** of a hike I would recommend doing the opposite and hiking from Upper Lehman CG to Wheeler and back or get someone to pick you up. It is a great hike but nearly 7 miles w/ a 2,000 elevation gain. You travel through a variety of ecological habitats following Lehman Creek for some of the way. The area closer to Lehman Creek CG is pretty open and hot; a lot of the hike from Wheeler CG down to Upper Lehman is in tree cover.

An early snow storm closed the Wheeler Peak road and access to the Bristlecone Pine Trail so we took the Lehman Creek Trail and are happy we did. It follows the stream and crosses an old mining ditch. Unbelievable how difficult it must have been to dig that ditch by hand as the ground is very rocky. That's a point we would like to make about the trail. It's rocky and we were happy to have changed from athletic shoes to our hiking boots. This is also a good trail where one or two hiking polls come in handy. It's pretty much up hill all the way and in the two miles we hiked one way we probably gained 750' to the 9000' level. We took lots of rest stops though a couple younger hikers went by us showing good endurance. Along the entire trail were aspens up to a foot in diameter - stunning beauty. Huge hillside stacked rock formations were unique. At the trail end (3.5 mi) is a campground making it a good objective for campers. We did this as a day trip but there is much here to see should one want to hike to the top of Wheeler Peak (13,063') and see the oldest Bristle cone Pines. One of the primary attractions are Lehman Caves. We didn't have time for this but it is popular and you need reservations. Call ahead.
