the bus loads of people that you would normally expect there (and you can see on the view point platforms that they facilitate busloads) were not there, hence we had a very quiet and extremely great holiday in true nature in Yuanyang rice terraces. quite difficult to get to at the moment(december 2020) , but manageable. we took train from Kunming to Jianshui - 10:30 bus to Xinjie and another minibus to our hotel. arrived in the early afternoon.

This review is more specifically about guided tours/hikes with Jacky. We did an amazing personalized hike through the rice terrace fields with Jacky. He speaks fluent English and will personalize your visit according to what you want. We wanted a good long hike with great photography and he definitely delivered. Spending the day on a guided tour with Jacky was very interesting. On the one hand, he has traveled all over the world and knows a lot about international culture, and on the other hand, you can definitely feel the love he has for his culture and his land. As we walked through the local towns and rice fields, we learned about local customs, religious beliefs, food, languages, clothing customs, and much more. Jacky seemed to know a lot of the locals and it was charming to walk through the villages as he greeted and chatted with them. At some point, we got stuck in rain, and he helped us find shelter at a kind elderly man's summer cabin in the middle of the rice fields. We ended up spending a good hour out of the rain with this 90 year old man, his dog and his chickens, and we kept warm by the fire as he smoked his big bamboo pipe (quite common in the region). It was a very charming and authentic experience. We also learned about local plants (he would get us to sniff different herbs and explained how the locals used them in food and medicine). Keep in mind that the villages in Yuanyang differ a lot culturally from the rest of Yunnan and China, and having lived in China for 2 years, it was really nice to learn about the cultural diversity present in Yuanyang. We had one full day to spend in Pugaolao and we left feeling like we had seen and lived it all after our guided tour with Jacky. Jacky was recommended to us by our hotel (we did not stay at his guesthouse). I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend him as a guide, even if you stay somewhere else in Pugaolao or in another neighboring town. His guided tour was worth every penny and more!

There was a very marked path that was safe to walk along. Amazing views of the sunset - photographers heaven! The little shop sold beer so even better to watch the sun go down with a beer!

We had to wake early in the morning and leave at dark to reach this place and didn't regret at all to catch breathtaking sunrise scenery of the first light reflecting on paddy field water with the background of thick mist.

Although getting there was a long process, this is definitely one of those “once in a lifetime” experiences. No photos do this place justice, and it’s just mind boggling how all these terraces were built thousands of years ago with only primitive tools.
Due to the place being a bit out of the way, tourist numbers were still manageable. So unlike many of our other experiences in China.
The locals are also very friendly, and whilst there are some tourist trinket stalls, you don’t feel pressured into buying anything.
Would also highly recommend a visit to the Shengcun market. First “real” market I’ve been to in China that is both interesting AND non-touristy. But you’ll have to check with the locals what days the market runs. The local tribes use a different calendar system.

The hills are cut into terraces, fill them with rainwater, and plant paddy (rice). As simple as that, for the last 600 years perhaps. The gigantic man made landscape is a marvel. As scenic as it can get, especially at sunrise and sunsets, when the coloured clouds and sun is also reflected from the water filled terraces; the sight offers great opportunities to the avid photographers or even amateurs. The landscape changes throughout the year, from the beginning of planting season where the terraces are water filled, then to the fields of green of the young rice plants growing up, and finally ripening to golden hues at harvest. Pick the right season for your travels to enjoy the different coloured landscapes.

Enjoy the sunrise view of Duoyishu Rice Terraces in the morning, the sunset view of Laohuzui Rice Terraces in the afternoon. The sunset and sunrise views are the highlights tour of Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces.

The roce terraces are marvellous and picture perfect.
One wonders how they managed to built this?
Hard labour and long hours, it deserves respect!

Based on me going to Duoyishu, Bada and some others along the road. Laohuzui was still closed and inaccessible in April 2019
Nothing can predict whether the sunrise or sunset will be perfect for photos. Basically I saw two sunrises without clouds and one sunset with clouds but no colours. The mirror effect you see on the photos will still be there don't worry but it'll be grey on black sort of colours. You might catch some reflexions of the sun but only a very faint pink or purple colour.
During the day you might not have the blue mirror effect though, it apparently depends on the sky. When I was there in April the sky was blue but the blue mirror effect wasn't there. My driver said it just wasn't the best sky for that.
In terms of travel from Kunming: I had a private driver, we stopped in Jianshui along the way and yes, it takes forever. Even with a driver you should account for an average of 6h. The first half is freeway but the second is only mountain roads and since china is in constant construction, you'll have very slow trucks along the way, which will slow you down. So don't expect to only drive for 5h.
There is nothing to see on the freeway on the way there. All the cities are ugly, even those in the mountains. you'll have to wait to be there to see the nice typical villages. For those who like sleeping on the bus,no FOMO, you can sleep all the way.
The rice terraces set-up is basically in a valley with all the small villages where you're likely to stay being spread out every few km up the mountain. The road makes some sort of massive U shape with the terraces in the middle of the U.
For sunrise and sunset I recommend you be there about 30min in advance. No need to be there 1h in advance. The buses were coming in within 30min of the sunrise / sunset when i was there in April. Once they arrive though, it's every man for himself so secure some space.
I had a driver so I did not try the bus that goes around.
Some of the rice terraces are very well set-up with cafes, restaurants etc.
Take your drone but be aware it's drone central, you might have up to 6 drones in the air at the same time, and many locals don't respect the safety rules so be careful when you fly and don't forget to get your drone registered otherwise you won't be able to fly further than 30m high and 50m far, which basically won't give you anything interesting. It can also be quite windy up there.
a lot of website lists the best seasons as being up to March but in late April there was still water in most of the terraces and no snow (it was actually 30+ degrees celcius in the mountain and 40 degrees down the valley)

This was the first stop on our Yunnan tour and it was an amazing start!
!!! If you are coming from Kunming you can dare to take the overnight bus 7 PM. Though be warned it ends at 2 AM in yunyang xinjie town. You may need a good command of Chinese to handle stay over in the bus till morning. We were lucky that the driver let us sleep over in the bus. But don't count on it. !!!
Came early morning from the town where all busses end (yunyang xinjie) and took the wan for 60 kuai to the village of Pugao Laozhai Village, Duoyishu county. There, our host from FLowers Residence waited for us to take us to the hostel. He even wanted to take our bags.
After putting our bags in the beautiful lobby, getting acquainted with hostel cats and having a morning beer we were ready to shoot the sunrise.
Altogether spent there 3 nights and it was gorgeous. The peace and tranquility. Real holiday relax. Note that we arrived after the season. Most restaurants were closed and hotels empty.
You can hire a wan to take you around the different view and terraces. We paid 300 RMB for half a day driving around with a 1h hike and a sunset view.
You can also just walk alone and enjoy the discovery. If you are fit it will be no big problem for you. Make sure you have enough food and water with you. If you get lost, keep the name card of your hostel and phone number ready so the locals can call them.
ENJOY THE BEAUTY

What is the chances that the rice fields would be filled with water by end of November, 2018? Thanks

They have multiple harvest year round so I guess there will be enough terrasses filled with water. Have fun!

Depending on what you want to see. If you want to see the rice terrace with water in it, then Oct is NOT the time. If you just want to see rice terraces, then you can go anytime

there are more moments of planting and harvesting the rice all year around but in general april/may (not to hot) and sept/oct are very good.

Most of the guesthouses have zircon. Shouldn't be a problem looking for one with zircon rooms.

How difficult is it to get around this area for an older tourist? Is there a lot of climbing required over steep terrain to get good views?

The thing is that the scope of walking depends entirely on you. You want to walk, you walk... You just want to see - you hire a local guide, eg. Belinda (a very nice, English speaking person) who can drive you arround and the only walking you do is when you stop and leave the car to take a few photos or go a few steps to the viewing platform. So the effort you take depends on your choice only...
