We took a group boat ride out to the caves - we were lucky it was a beautiful sunny day (and pre-Covid!). This was actually in Feb 2020 but TA won’t seem to let me review that far back so just adding that caveat here. Definitely worth checking out.

“Boat trip on the Lago General Carrera in Chile”

984/5000 With the speedboat 'El Chile' we start our wonderful trip on the icy and clear water of Lago General Carrera. After a short boat trip through the beautiful landscape, we arrive at the first rocks and caves. The openings are just big enough to enter the boat so that we can also touch the smooth inside. Unfortunately, our guide only speaks Spanish, so we only catch a few words here and there, but we don't mind because the view is breathtaking. Depending on the position of the sun, the rocks and caves also get different colors. Of course, the most beautiful rocks with common names such as 'the cathedral' and 'the chapel' are visited at the end of the tour. The water has carved these marble rocks in such a way that holes have really formed where you can see through. On the other hand, there are also a few thin lines of rock straight, making it look like pillars. Very nice!

Boat trip on the Lago General Carrera in Chile

Over-crowded, becoming the "Cancun" of Southern Chile

The caves are wonderful, but the growth of the village is unpleasant, street hawkers touting tours, which leave every five minutes. It's a queue of boats jostling to see the caves. Prices have sky-rocketed, accommodation and food are mediocre and expensive, and the caves across the lake are far nicer and not so well-known. It's a pity, as the Carretera Austral was "off the beaten track" until recently. Tranquilo, and the caves, are a worrying omen of where this region is heading.

We visited these unique geological formations by boarding a tour boat from Puerto Sanchez, a small village accross from Puerto Rio Tranquilo. This allowed us to avoid the mass tourism (relatively speaking for the Carretera Austral that is) of Puerto Rio Tranquilo and also in addition to the caves and formations along the coast just south of Tranquilo to visit the caves of the large island in the archipelago to the east. You have have to make a detour from the CA over a dramatic pass to get to Sanchez but this road also offers spectacular views on the Lago General Carrera as well as some impressive overhanging rocks along this gravel road only built in year 2000. The caves offer fabulous shapes and amazing colors and definately worth visiting.

Beautiful natural structures

The Marble Caves are amazing and beautiful! We did two options -- the boat ride and the kayaks. I'm glad I did both -- the kayaks feel much more intimate and let you really soak in the spectacle of it. We got extremely lucky and no other boats or kayaks came by for about thirty minutes, so the caves belonged just to us. But our guide said he had literally never seen it that peaceful before! But the boats are nice because you see WAY more -- I did the kayaking first and had no clue how expansive the cave system actually was until I saw the boats. Beautiful!! I didn't get the vibe that there are too many protections in place, though, so I hope this landscape is well-taken care of and stays the way it is! You could feel infrastructure coming into Puerto Tranquilo. It's already a hot spot on the backpacker trail and a tourism-based town (glacier treks and the caves), but I bet in a year they'll finish paving the road down there and the whole atmosphere of the town will change.

This is truly a magical place. I wonder if there are any other naturally formed caves in the entire world with similar appearance.

We couldn’t take a boat trip to the caves the day we arrived in Puerto Rio Tranquilo, because the wind was way too strong, so the port was closed down. But we booked a trip for the next morning at sunrise, despite a windy forecast. As did everyone visiting Rio Tranquilo that day!
The boat service was very serious, though it may not look that way at first glance, and after safety equipment was distributed, we set out on a choppy lake.
The caves are unique, and marvelous! I’m so glad we could get there, they really are worth the trip to PRT. Not much one can say as to what they look like, they have to be seen.
The return trip, head on in to the wind, on a lake that by then was getting tricky, was mastered superbly and patiently by Captain Luis Cansino, an excellent helmsman, who knows his lake, and how the job is done.
Highly recomended!!

A wet and fast boat trip to the caves followed by a gentle tour in an out of the caves. A lot of explanation but all in Spanish but the main point is what you see. The longer trip is probably worth the extra cash for a more relaxed time in the caves.

A must see!

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this amazing natural rock formation, many forms, the colors of the lake are marvelous, many people on high seasons.
They also recommend to visit the marble caves at Puerto Sánchez, not so popular and great place as well.

Definitely worth a visit!

Took a day trip from Chile Chico to visit the caves. Long day + journey in the minibus but absolutely worth it. Took an excursion through Martín Pescador - very happy with the service provided. Managed to help us organise things and treated with upmost professionalism. Skipped the queues for the boat (however word of warning the lake can be pretty rough!) Definitely worth the money, and would recommend booking through Martín Pescador.
