The Blue Hole in Belize is a must do dive for scuba divers who visit Belize but it is not a great dive. Very little marine life. You dive to 140 feet and due to the depth only have 10 minutes at the bottom of the dive. The stalactites are amazing. We did two reef dives after the Blue Hole dive and quite a bit of marine life on those dives.
I did the dive trip with Frenchies Dive out of Caye Caulker and they are brilliant. Great hire gear and excellent dive masters.

A flight over the blue hole is a must on a clear day if you happen to be visiting the country. It's short, fun, offers an incredible view to the Blue Hole and many other sights on the way there.

So here’s the thing… if you visit the GBH because you expect (incorrectly) to find the same kind of vibrant coral and sea life you’ll experience at other Belizean sites, you’ll be disappointed. But that’s not what your visit to the GHB should be for. Instead, come prepared to be blown away by the immensity of the sunken cave structure, the huge stalactites that were formed over thousands of years, and the vastness of the deep, dark waters off the sandy shelf and you’ll be richly rewarded. If you come here simply to check the proverbial “bucket list” dive site off your list but leave dissatisfied, it’s your own fault for not appreciating what has given it that status to begin with. And yes, enjoy the other dives that’ll be paired with the GBH (Half Moon Caye and the Aquarium) because they are the amazing, vibrant sea life we all love, too.

I dive the Great Blue Hole with Amigos del Mar dive shop.
I liked it but it takes a two-hour rough boat ride to arrive.
The Great Blue Hole dive was only a 25-minute dive, with 5 minutes bottom time at 40 m / 130 feet. Stalagmites and stalactites were cool things but too dark for my taste. I am glad I went, but will not go there again.
The two dives after that - Half Moon Caye, and the Aquarium, were quite good. Also, lunch on Half Moon Caye island and the walk around it made the long boat ride worth it.

We visited the Great Blue hole today as a scenic flight from Caye Caulker.
Neither my wife or I dive (I have ear issues which prevent proper equalisation) but while in Belize we wanted to see this wonder so thought a scenic flight would be a great option.
There are two companies that do scenic fly overs of the blue hole - Maya Airlines and Tropic Airlines. The tour companies offering them on the streets will normally just place you with one of these two - they don’t have their own private planes. We messaged both - the tours offered were essentially identical (1 hour scenic flight) but the price for Maya Airlines was 240 USD per person while tropic airlines was 269 USD per person so we went with the former rather than the later. They don’t fly everyday though so its worth checking this.
We walked to the airstrip in Caye Caulker and check in was seamless. There is a room you wait in that has air conditioning and wifi.
A short walk (100m) to the approximately 12 seater plane and off we went.
The flight itself was exactly an hour. The highlight was obviously lighthouse reef and the blue hole.
In terms of the plane it doesn’t matter where you sit - the pilot does a number of passes of the big ticket attractions (Blue Hole, Shipwreck, Island Atolls) that allow both sides of the plane equal vantage.
Now we normally travel on a limited budget but I felt even though this cost a lot it was worth every dollar as we loved it that much. Would recommend.

This "bucket list" item is a "ONE AND DONE". To go diving in Belize and not see it, would be dumb. We went from Ambergris Caye, it was a 2 and 1/2 hour boat ride and was VERY rough. 5 days later, I am still sore from the 5 hour rt boat ride. 25 minute dive, 5 minutes bottom time at 122 feet. Stalagmites/tites were a cool thing. I am glad I went, but will not go there again. The two dives after that - Half Moon Caye, and the Aquarium, were OUTSTANDING - sharks, turtles, grouper. Lunch on Half Moon Caye island made the long boat ride worth it, but this is the last over 30 minutes boat ride I will ever take on a dive venture.

Seeing the Great Blue Hole has been on my my dream list for a while now so to see it on the day of my birthday was something special! The joy and satisfaction I felt the moment it appeared in my sight... the adrenaline from flying the small plane, COVID masks and all of the things that kept me on the edge just suddenly went away, I entered a perfect state of peace :) the beauty of the atolls and the Great Blue Hole is something amazing, next to flying over Bahamas the most unique "world" ever - it's like a different planet, it's hard to believe when you see it that we are still on Earth.
For those who want to organize it - do contact both companies for the quote, we ended up going with Maya Air (even though our round trip from BZE to stay in San Pedro we flew with Tropic Air) simply because they gave us a much better quote - that is $430 for two people, which honestly was much less than I expected but that definitely was a pleasant surprise. Both companies are great and have nice crew, clean planes. We visited in "still COVID" April 2021 and pretty much the entire plane was full for the tour - if you are interested ask the company in advance to have the seat next to the pilot to have the "front row" if that's your thing.
The tour on paper is almost 1.5h long - you fly along the reef to then hop over Turneffe Atoll and finally to Lighthouse Reef (I absolutely loved the wreck of the huge ship stuck in the reef, saw smaller ones on different reefs but here the contrast is just so vivid!!!) - beautiful views, like I said you forget that you are still on mother Earth :) if you are concerned about the angles/views - let me put it this way YOU GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH - they make absolutely sure every single person got to see it, be patient the pilot will approach it for your side of the plane in due time and he will do it many many times, different heights low-high-mid so you will get to see it all and more than you were hoping for :)
Now, do not get your excitement "affect your stomach" as the plane does turn a lot and it is a small plane and I got my stomach "mixed up" for a second and needed to chill out with music but my wife was so excited, moving, turning, taking pictures in wrong time and it got to the point that we were looking in my backpack for a paper back... luckily she "survived" :) but just remember not to move too much in the turns because it is a small plane and if you need the "magic paper bag" there is none and you can ruin the experience for others hehe
The pictures don't give it justice... you have to see it to BELIZE IT! :)

This was the main objective of our trip. Dive the blue hole. We decided to take a flight over the hole as you can’t get a sense of it from the boat. We loved the flight.
We chose to hire a private dive master and see the hole our own way. We didn’t go 130’ with the group to see the cave. We dove half way around the rim.
This is not a pretty dive! Don’t expect colour full coral or tropical fish. This is about the experience. This was a bucket list item for us and we enjoyed it.

Seeing the stalagmites and stalactites 140 feet down is an awesome experience. And you can't see the bottom from there. Our dive lasted about 8 minutes at the Arch. Not much to see- a few fish and perhaps a shark.
The boat trip from San Pedro takes about 2.5 hours. Open seas can get rough. Park fee is $40 per person. It's a worthwhile experience.
The tour includes two additional dive sites where you'll see lots of colorful fish, corals, sharks, rays, turtles, giant groupers, etc. A full day trip that starts at 6:00am and gets back to San Pedro around 5:30pm

Hi, I am visiting Belize City on 27/28 Dec. Is there any dive centres that has daily dives to the Great Blue Hole regardless of the number of divers?
Thanks!

Hi Kim -
I'm trying to see about booking this trip for my husband. We will be in Belize in June and wanted to know which company you used, and the cost.
Thanks,

If you do not mind, could you please tell me the company that you used to visit the Blue hole for snorkeling? My wife and I are interested in seeing this and your review seemed to fit the type of excursion we had in mind. Thanks!

I am terrified of heights and not a great swimmer. My husband and I are going with another couple in September. Can I still walk with them and not do any diving. Also, are there any shallow area where I can just relax and wait for my group to finish?

First time scuba diving - I want to dive the Blue Hole, but I have never dived before. Is it possible? Do they allow inexperienced divers.. like the “Discover Scuba” tours offered in Key West, Florida? Please advise!

Sorry just saw this. You cannot do a first dive at the Blue Hole. You have to have a few dives under your belt. We were certified months before our trip, and hired a private guide to do 6 dives around AC before we attempted Blue Hole. We did just fine, although my husband ran out of air so that was a little scary. So do other dives before even looking at the Blue Hole.

Are there day charters/boats to the Blue Hole? If so what is the name of the company?
Thank you

The only boats there are the ones on the scuba/snorkel trip and you still need to pay the fees (if you look at the photos, the view is just of dark water).
If you want to simply see the Hole, the best thing is to take a flight there. A helicopter will be $$$$$$$$$$$ but a flight on Tropic Air will average around $250 USD. It was worth seeing it from the air, despite being afraid to fly.
