Wonderful experience in getting to know the events that took place in Salerno and surrounding territories during the invasion of Italy during World War 11. A must see with artifacts and videos.

Driving from il Sassi de Matera to Napoli my thoughts were to find Eboli, with a fascination of a quiet town of which I knew nothing except reference to a famous literary work. Eboli .. the signpost is clearly marked on the S7, the turn just before Salerno. Shifted down a gear the Fiat Ulysses valiantly climbed steep, ever narrowing mountain roads until there was nothing for it but to walk or give up my mission.
In the midday hush my determination only strengthened to tramp on and upward, past a tiny chiesa, closed to the world. One more turn and there suddenly, in amazing contrast to its surroundings stood a modern building with solid glass doors, marble stairway and a high wall of shimmering glass.
This is la Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Eboli e della media Valle del Sele ... Testimonianze Archeologiche da Campagna .. a modern marvel of a museum dedicated to the area findings dating as far back as the Bronze Age .
Inside, I felt utterly alone. It was eerie but mesmerising .. and inviting. A stone stairway bathed in heavenly light led to a cool chamber where one glass cabinet after another displayed the artefacts of ages, contents of graves, funeral furnishings, vessels and earthenware known to be made around Paestum and local valleys centuries before the time of Christ.
Hundreds of humidified items of life, clothing, adornments, pottery and iron utensils, armory dating back to the bronze age and beyond, relics of graves and evidence of necropolis of an age long buried .. chamber after chamber unfolded in this fantastic place.
(At this stage I must mention it was a hot, hazy September day, previous to the last visit date Trip Advisor has provided)
A gentleman stepped out in greeting and explained his role as historian. I stumbled an apology, as if I had trodden sacred ground but, with great charm he invited me to peruse at leisure, handed me a glossy journal of information and so I spent the day in Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Eboli.
Archeologists and researchers have provided invaluable insights into the life and times of the area over the ages. There are documents of the iron age referring to pit graves coming from small settlements linked to routes followed by shepherds when moving livestock.
Ancient customs are revealed .. of a young woman of high social standing I could piece together a picture of her life and her family. Of another small grave statuettes placed prominently seem to be a tacit request to protect the child entombed there.
With my interest in ancient cultures, this day was pure serendipity. The museum will appeal to anyone fascinated by history, with some knowledge of the area.
