It's a two hour walk at least, so be prepared to go up and down. The path is nice, many plants, trees, and some animals if you are lucky. The waterfall itself is impressive. It's so huge you cannot express it through a picture, you have to be there and just watch it. It is powerful. Entrance is 20 soles pp. They keep the path clean of rubbish. some parts of the track have stairs. Do rent a walking stick at the beginning (just one sol), it helps a lot, especially on the steep parts. Try to start your trip early in the morning. Some people swim in the pool under the fall. It seems to be quite cold.

It takes just 45 minutes by bus from Chachapoyas to Cocahuayco (on the main road to Pedro Ruiz) from where there are moto taxis in the direction of Gocta. You can either go to the bottom of the falls following a trail from Cocachimba, or to the top part following a trail from San Pablo. Moto taxis to either village cost 5 Soles per person and take about 45 minutes.

For me hiking along the trails was the best part of the experience.
From San Pablo to the upper part of Gocta took me one hour and 15 minutes. The trail goes up very gradually and most of the time you have great views over the valley. The trail is connected to a trail leading downwards to the lower part of the fall. I found being at the bottom of the fall the most spectacular as there is a pool in a kettle-like rocky formation. From here you can walk to Cocachimba (one hour, more if you are not fit).

Overall a great experience if you like hiking.

Admission fee 10 Soles to enter either at San Pablo or at Cocachimba. There are no check points in between the hamlets or when exiting.

We visited the Gocta Falls in early February as part of a tour of the sites of the Utcubamba Valley. It is an impressive water fall standing 771 meters high, one of the world's highest. The water flow was low during our visit making it less impressive that it could have been but it was still worth the trek. We stayed in Chachapoyas and booked our tour through the hotel. There is about an hour's drive to Cocachimba where the trek to the base of the lower falls begins. It is about 10 km to the falls and back, and the path is rugged and anything but flat. There are substantial climbs and descents involved and it is warm and humid amid in the subtropical fauna that blankets the mountain side. An alternative is to rent a horse and handler (see note below) that will escort you to within 2 km of the base of the falls and wait for you to return. Contrary to what several people told us, the last 2 km is not flat and has several climbs and descents before arriving at a mirador which presents fine views of the lower falls. A further hike of half a kilometer takes you to the base.

The community that manages tourism at the falls has a stable on the main square and horses can be rented there. Cost at time of writing was 40 soles round trip. We booked our horses through the tour company which ensures availability upon arrival.

It was a wonderful experience, the waterfall was amazing and beautiful. Friendly people and delicious food. I encourage you to ask for a horse instead of walk ( almost 3hours) , there are a lot of people renting horses close the bus station.

We hiked gocta on our own and couldn't be happier we did it that way. We started in San Pablo and walked our way down to see the mirador from the upper part of the waterfall and also the down part. It was a beautiful 5-6 hour hike. When we arrived down we walked to the village of Cocachimba. There was a colectivo there who offered direct transport to Chachapoyas for 10 sol. This is a very good deal because taking a moto taxi and after that a colectivo costs 10 sol as well. The man was the only collectivo who offered direct transport to Chachapoyas and he drove us very safely back and with a lot of tips and tricks about what to do in the region. I would definitely recommend taking that colectivo!

Beautiful, breathtaking, amazing. Just wow! I hope we had more time and would visit both parts of the waterfall (we only wernt to low level). The walk is about 5 km one way but not complicated at all and really worth it. Highly recommend it to visit.

Really nice place that should be done after the rainy season (the rainfalls will be more impressive).
Don't hesitate to start from the top city (don't remmeber the name) to reach the high part of the rainfall and then go down and see it from down.

The cataraca de gocta has 2 falls, the upper which is a shorter one and the second which is a longer one. I visited the place without joining a tour.

How to go?
Took a combi at the terminal Terrestre which go to Pedro Ruiz, told the driver to drop you off at cocahuayco (which is before Pedro Ruiz), the combi is around 5-7 Sol. Then took a combi to go to San Pablo (5 sol), there you can buy the entry ticket which is around 15 sol.

The path (please refer to the map)
The path is very well paved and not steep until you reach a junction (1hr 15 min) , where you go to the right path and walk up for 30 minutes to reach the 1st fall. After that, return to the junction and this time head for  the right path. It is a path all the way down to the bottom of the mountain, and I took 1 hour to walk down (it is really all the way down and was slippery due to the rain). There is a Mirador on the way where you can see the whole cataraca, continue walked down until you crossed a bridge. Walked up a bit and you will arrive a junction, go to the left and this brings you to the second fall. After that, return to the junction and go to the right path, about 2 hours you will reach Cocachimba.

Note:
* I arrived San Pablo around 9am (Wednesday) and I was the first one to enter, so there was no one at the 1st fall except I saw two reporters who rode a horse to get up there from Cocachimba.
*Personally , I like the 1st fall more because I can have the whole fall for myself! Expect to find quite a lot of people at the second fall.
*I took 6 hours for the whole walk because I stopped for awhile until a shower ended.
*bring water, snack and raincoat, the weather changes rapidly at the mountain.
* there is no stall selling food along the way to the 1 st fall and the 1 hr way getting down, but there are shops on the way return to Cocachimba.
*you could ride a horse to the fall at Cocachimba, I heard it is around 40 sol.

This is an amazing place. The walking is very challenging as it is a long hike climbing most of the time on an Inca style trail, a lot of steps and rocks. It takes at least 2.5-3 hours. If you are not physically ready I recommend to get a horse. Once you get there you will see it was worth the walking. Breathtaking scenery and it you are for it get in the water at the bottom of the first fall. The water might be around 50F but it’s worth it.
