Good museum
Mar 2020 • Pasangan
This museum is pretty good. You can see not only the prehistoric civilizations of eastern Taiwan but the diverse cultures of aboriginal peoples. However, its location is really remote from wherever you are. The only way to get there is taxi; otherwise, you have to rent a scooter, which maybe a little inconvenient for foreign visitors.

Also, the architectural style is really..... um......revival? It can be easily recognized that it’s been built for decadesssssss. Not a disadvantage, but a little surprising~

Must Visit Museum
Des 2019
This attraction is not well known but it has to be one of the best museums we have visited. It is definitely world class with good English explanations. Museum focuses on the pre-historic history of Taiwan and how the archaeological findings in places such as Taitung's Baxian cave showed the existence of prehistoric people and their way of life. It is fascinating to find out how Taiwan was connected to the mainland in prehistoric times and people and animals migrated to Taiwan and were then cut off after tectonic movements created the Taiwan Straits, thereby separating Taiwan from the mainland. There were hardly any visitors on a Thursday afternoon which is a real pity.

Museum was huge and needed at least 2-3 hours. Please note that it is quite out of the way and trains to the nearby Kangle Station comes by infrequently. Check the train schedule on the TRA website and time your visit with the train schedule. Kangle Station is only 1 stop away from Taitung Station (7 mins) and a 5 min walk from the museum. Due to the infrequent trains, we took a taxi from Taitung City to the museum which cost about NT250 and took the train back to Taitung Station.

Good for kids but parental advisory needed
Sep 2019
The museum is kinda remote form everything and although there is a train station close by, trains don't stop there very often. So it was kinda energy consuming to get there and away as a backpacker.
The Museum itself is huge and got a lot of stuff to see, but most of it seemed to me to be arranged for kids or teenagers. The reason I came there was the exhibition about Taiwanese aboriginals. Unfortunately those were exhibited at the end when I was already quiet tired. There were some other highlights in the museum and I believe for people who don't know much about these things it may be exciting, but for me as a trained anthropologist there was not much new and the interesting objects weren't explained. in depth. There was a strange video of the daily life of a couple of "cavemen". That video gave me the feeling of traveling back through time....to the 1950ies: he goes fishing, while she stays in the cave sewing and making fire, waiting for the man to come back, so she can cook him his food. I seriously doubt most things in that video to be close to reality, starting with people living as a monogamous 2 people couple in a cave at that point of pre-history. There were a few things like that, that would need some parental advisory, but also quiet some scenic enactments that appeared more reasonable to me an a lot of beautiful stone objects.

Excellent displays of pre-Neolithic finds of Taiwan.
Okt 2019
We ordered a taxi(US$14-RT) for the 4 miles southwest to this isolated museum. After checking our passports, we were given free senior tickets and followed the signed route through the large museum. We wound through halls of basic natural history and archaeology before descending a ramp into the lower levels. Here around a large atrium, were a succession of halls displaying life-sized dioramas of the small tribal groups performing a specific activity.
-Cutting stone tools.
-Burial in slate coffin.
-Cleaning fish at beached boat.
-Making pottery.
-Dressing a killed buck.
-Harvesting clams.
Along the walls were encircling displays of relevant artifacts dating back to the Stone Age, often with dimly lit descriptions in Chinese and English.
Exiting, we passed through the Hall of Indigenous Tribes of Taiwan with colorful costumes and handsome fishing boats. This is a wonderful museum.

Amazingly important museum - with lots in English
Sep 2019
This museum is on the site where a pre historic burial ground was discovered more than a decade ago during the building of the new city railway station.
Archaeologists were only given ten years to excavate and find out what they could before the very ugly station was built (and out of town?!?!)
But the museum staff have done an amazing job telling the history of the site but it also explains the 16 aboriginal tribes that were from this area.
Loads to see and read - lots of interactivity for adults and children alike.
Our guide Lily also had excellent English.
We stayed in the museum's own hotel next door which was very handy as this site is out of town - though next to the airport.

Somewhat interesting, not a Must See
Agt 2019
Fairly new facility covers many aspects of the ancient inhabitants of Taiwan (but there are also sections devoted to human evolution and the sciences involved in archaeology). There are artifacts and life-sized sculptures covering different historical eras, and a section devoted to the indigenous tribes on the island. There are large concrete-like models of ancient animals (which bear no relation to the tiny actual fossil artifact displayed). Lots of activities geared towards young children, including 3-D movies of the kids inserted into the displays and hands-on exhibits and play areas. The projection mapping program in the basement was just weird: new age music with stylized cartoonish depictions of ancient humans, artifacts and other things projected onto the walls of the central courtyard (something like a laser light show); perhaps entertaining for kids, but no direct educational value.

A great way to spend half a day in taitung
Feb 2019 • Sendiri
This museum proved to be an excellent learning experience. I learnt about the creation of taiwan and the tribes. Spectacular. And a lovely tribal lunch to round it off. Definitely recommend it.
It is greatly appreciated that there is a lot of information in English. At times though the sequence to follow is not clear. Other than that, go and enjoy.

One of Taiwan’s best museums
Jan 2019 • Teman
National Museum of Prehistory was a big surprise and was well worth the trip to its rather isolated location in the city. The permanent exhibition covering the natural history of Taiwan specifically was well set up with decent English explanations. There are sections of the museum that specifically highlight the indigenous culture which were informative. The two temporary exhibitions were about the ancient and relatively modern music of the indigenous people which were quite interesting. Handful of interactive displays like the one creating prehistoric images of visitors was entertaining. Well worth a couple of hours, it is one of the best museums in the country.

Austronesian tribal culture - not just pre-history
Jun 2018 • Pasangan
We expected to see nothing but dinosaurs and their relatives, but the Museum of Prehistory offers much more, and focuses on Austroneisan tribal culture, providing a great deal of information on aboriginal history and lifestyle. Much of the material is interactive, in a variety of ways. Particularly intriguing was a device that enabled the visitor electronically to try out various tribal tattoos on a picture of one’s face.

Numerous staff members are Austronesian, and we had a couple of very interesting and informative conversations with two of them. There is a restaurant that serves ethnic food – the server had a Master’s degree in social anthropology, so she was able to tell us quite a lot!

The weather outside was extremely wet, so it was an excellent way to spend a day. It is slightly out of town. We were told it was possible to get a bus, but we preferred to be safe and take a taxi. The museum staff kindly phoned for a taxi to get us back to the hotel.
