I am kind of an architecture buff and I just loved walking around and through this amazing modern architecture monument! It feels so organic. Even without a ticket you can go inside some of the lobbies and performance areas too. But the highlight is the structure itself. Really something worth experiencing!

Let me say at the outset that if your traveling here by train then you can take Exit 5 (which was recommended in a travel blog) however Exit 6 is far more convenient.
After I arrived and looked around I thought why did I come here. I didn't have a ticket to anything. But I found it interesting seeing photos of inside the Opera House, Concert Hall, Recital Hall, Indoor and Outdoor Theaters, Playhouse (unsure) and all these massive venues all under the same roof. Pretty impressive.
There were stall vendors inside the complex and other stall vendors were setting up outside from 2pm onwards.
So all was not lost.
I would probably have given another point if I had had a ticket lol.

To respond to someone complaining parking.

There are no public parking facilities that will reserve parking space for concert goers anywhere in the world! If you don’t want to take the risk then you should use public transportation or taxi.

On a normal day, the parking space is enough. In rear occations such as full house concert, better use public transportation or arriving early.

After the dinner, I usually go around Weiwuying .Weiwuying National Kaohsiung Center is surrounded by a huge park ,so I think that it is a nice place to take a walk at nigt. However ,under the building ,you will feel it is an enormous UFO, not a national art center. In addition,I also get inside to see the symphony orchestra ,and the decoration of the building is so amazing that I had ever seen before.I think it is a nice place the you must visit definitly.

Marvelous!!! This is a huge building complex, housing an Opera House (2236 seats), a Concert Hall (1981 seats), a Playhouse (1210 seats) and a Recital Hall (434 seats).

All are world-class venues. They are connected by wavy floors and a stunning, streamline roof. It is said that the center is the largest single roof arts venue in the world.

The Center has opened and operated since 2018. In the building complex, there are also a restaurant, a dinning pub, a coffee shop, a tea house and some other shops. You can hang around here all day long.

It really is a modern architectural masterpiece. I think it will become the land mark of Kaohsiung City.

Don’t go for a concert there. You will be told that the underground parking is full(!!!), no places reserved for concert visitors, and a paper map of parking lots nearby will be handed out. Even knowing the parking situation , they will start the concert with the strike of the clock.
Concerns are not accepted either.
So best be there much much earlier, as you need to consider a long walk back to the concert hall.

My wife called the night before to tell me that Kaohsiung has the largest performing arts center in the world. This was a fact unknown to me. The fact that was known to me (I had checked before arriving) was that there were no performances scheduled for the dates of my visit to Kaohsiung.

The center is easily accessible by MRT (Weiwuying Station). The building is enormous. I am not really into architecture and cannot make a qualitative statement as to its aesthetics or functionality. Regretfully, the performance halls were not open and so I did not get to see them.

You may find this place boring if you are not interested in learning about and architecture. This is definitely the place to witness and be awed by the special and unique architecture style. There are many things to see and learn. There is also a park to take a walk and relax.

Its main body Banyan Plaza is divided into several buildings, including theatre, opera house, exhibition areas. It’s spacious and comfortable. If you have time, try to buy a ticket to feel the modern experience. There is a good restaurant named Stage 5. It provides world class food quality. Taste it too! If you drive, there are enough car parks underground.

INTRODUCTION

Again not a historical opera house (such as the Moscow Bolshoi, London Royal Opera House, Milan La Scala, Paris Opera, Sydney Opera House, Saigon Opera house), this southern Taiwan performing arts center has the innovative, modern dynamics of many inspirational opera houses, categorically earning a place amongst others such as the Singapore Esplanade, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Harbin Opera House, Dubai WS Atkins opera house and Zaha Hadid's opera house in Guangzhou.

Finally open to the public in October 2018, this monumental, magnificent construction took a lengthy 15 years to build on an old military landsite, adjoining the Weiwuying park. The luxury of space cannot be underestimated in this lavish design, attracting many visitors to the first-prize unique design by Dutchman Francine Houben. The white, wavy exterior echoes the waves of sound both within and thrrough the complex walls, and there are numerous cafes and a restaurant (Stage) onsite.

ENVIRONMENT

Akin to other Opera Houses around the world which seek to landmark the city and add a smooth wavelength/wave mark to the city skyline, this enormous classical masterpiece is engineering of precision masterskills alongside treacherous and laborious hours of blueprinting, planning, compiling, execution, construction and tailored craftmanship.

Like the conductor of the orchestra, each part of the structure must come together to perform well, play the piece and astound the audience. There are various outdoor and indoor activity space pods/area dotted throughout the vicinity for events. Sitting on the outside roof auditorium is quite an experience, also offering landscape views of the surroundings.

The Central Lobby area near the PLAYHOUSE where the ticket/registration counters are located is rather small, made smaller by an elevated loft area with 4 steps up. Usually the lobby foyer is the biggest and grandest area to contain many guests/visitors/tour groups. This does narrow the walking area.

The interior is carpeted, which is fine for the main foyers, but a no-no for the food and beverage area. There are multiple stains all over the carpet at the eating area, which should be uncarpeted to facilitate cleaning and maintaining hygiene conditions.

The outside ground area resembles caves with meticulous engineered metal piece melted into archways, giving the impression of being inside but outside with dark sheltering areas illuminated by round orange lights and spotlights shining on the floor and ceiling.

ART and CRAFT KIOSKS

The art and craft kiosks and shops are isolated in a cordoned area, arranged like a exhibition store with smaller stalls within, which limits exposure to visitors. This is not obvious when walking within the premises, unless one is searching specifically for this attraction. Much too inconspicuous to boost shopping/economy/local craft/sales!

INTERNATIONAL PEFORMANCE

Compared to the Taichung Opera House (see my review), the spatial arrangement of the center has wasted a lot of space, whereas the Taichung Opera House is rather compact but still maintaining a spacious vibe and ambience.
Like the Sydney Opera house, Kaohsiung has also adopted a European design with waves emphasizing the harbor city and sound waves.
Compared to the Saigon Opera House (see my review), the Kaohsiung center for the arts is modern, minimalistic, stylish and grandiose.
Have not yet attended performance there yet so unable to comment on acoustics.

CAFES

There are about 7 food and beverage stores onsite at time of writing.

STAGE- fancy restaurant at the CORNER of the MEGASTRUCTURE

SimTREE- AWESOME COFFEE!

I-PIN CHEESE CAKE
Creamy, delicious, cheesy, yoghurty ice-cream! Comes in a small purple plastic cone cup, which one can reuse with the water fountains.

Baggage deposit boxes available at eating area.

PERILS

Being brand new, there are various humps and bumps like all new things that should be addressed.

Firstly, would suggest the Arts Center get rid of the carpets at the F&B area, which are dirty and soiled. One cannot just wipe with a cloth.
Second, the ultimate aim and goal is to bring visitors to see attractions/performances at the center, not just to see the building infrastructure. To achieve this, there are already multiple small TV advertising pods located both inside and outside the complex. However, these dynamic advertising screens are small for such a massive complex. Even more effective would be for installation of a crowd-screen LCD on the walls at the food and beverage area, so patrons can be aware or reminded of upcoming events at the center, like at the movies. Instead, the café area is rather quiet, with lack of these noticeboards/trailers. This would boost performance and publicity.

LOCATION

Adjacent the Arts Center is the Wei Wu Ying Park, which is Kaohsiungs’ version of Manhatten park, complete with resident squirrels and birds. There are bicycle lanes, bridges, fish ponds, lake area, forest walks and a childrens’ section under renovation.

PARKING

Charging 30NT per hour at the Weiwuying art center, it is more cheaper to park at the Weiwuying park. Excuse the pun.

No bikes, skates permitted at the center ground area (CAVE area). Some areas around the center has small wobbly square stone/cement not making the bike ride smooth at all.

TRANSPORT

Take the orange MRT line and alight at the Weiwuying station
Open hours 11AM-9PM

SUMMARY

Great place for a stroll, a coffee and a ice-cream!
