My husband and I just had a 3 D 2 Nts tour with Orangutantour. We had a fantastic time. We arrived in the morning on day 1, we made it to feeding station 1 around 2:30 pm, we saw a few orangutans, but the platform was at least 30 feet away, hard to take good pictures. The next morning we went to station 2, there were a few more orangutans, and the platform was only about 15 feet away, it was a much closer encounter. What we experienced later that afternoon at camp Leaky was something I will never forget. We saw a resident female Garra at camp leaky up close. She was walking around the footbridge when we visited, she was so close to us, Also saw a young adult male Tom, and a female with her baby just off the bridge, only a few feet away. At the feeding station, king Terry was there as well as around ten orangutans. They were there from around 2 to 3:30 pm. What an amazing experience. Our tour guide Anh is local. He took good care of us during the entire trip. The food and the service we had on the boat was very good. Most of the boats are very much alike. Guests dine and sleep on the upper level. In general, June, July and August are the best time to see the Orangutans. September is not a good month as Orangutans can find fruits somewhere else in the jungle, its quite possible they don't show up at all at the feeding station. Orangantour is run by local Kumai people. Hendra the owner responded quickly to all my questions.

The tour has been very complete. All services are included, transports, meals, tickets, tourist guide. It was two amazing days. On the boat, we were alone my partner and I, along with the crew and the guide.

Hendra helped us at all times to organize our trip and he also helped us with a problem we had with one of our suitcases. Febri, our guide was great, very funny, always aware of us and willing to answer all our questions.

The feeling of navigating the river is so great and seeing the organgutans has been unique.

In a way I am hesitant to write this review because this trip was incredibly sacred for me-- and the calmness of drifting along River Kumai without heaps of other boats is something I hope they are able to maintain in years to come.

With that said, I hope my writing here gives this team justice as they are definitely the 5 star experience! Aside from myself, my godfather, and friend, on board was a crew of 5 people: the captain, the guide, the cook, and two assistants.

Our guide was very friendly, open, had excellent English, and was incredibly knowledgeable as he used to be a ranger at Camp Leaky. The food was superb! Wow!!! Assistants were very cool and we enjoyed hanging out with them. The boat has a lovely front deck area to lounge on and just absorb the beautiful scenery. This area is also where they set up our bed every night. They draped mosquito mesh around the bed for added comfort.

Of course it was such an experience to see the feedings-- but what really blew my mind was that on our way back to our boat, not only one, but TWO mothers and their babies crossed paths with us!! WOW!!

Other than visiting the orangutans, we were also able to see other creatures in the nature along the riverbed-- dancing fireflies were probably my favorite!

Anyway, I highly recommend this team-- they are fantastic!

I read about Rini Mariani's orangutan tour in the New York Times. I contacted him and set up a trip up the river for two nights.
I brought my God daughter and her best friend and the three of us had a blast!
There was a crew of four and the three of us on the boat. We had the entire upper upper deck to ourselves with the crew living on the lower deck.
Our guide Yepi, a former ranger at the National Park, was excellent, and quite knowledgeable.
The cook prepared us three meals a day where we ate at a candle lit table in the back of the upper deck in the evening.
The boat had a shower and two toilets, and comfortable mattresses, sleeping out on the deck under a large mosquito net.
The tour consisted of three stops. Two at feeding spots within the national park where we could observe the orangutans and take pictures.
The third stop was at Camp Leakey further upstream where we also went to their feeding spot.
But it was here on the trails to and from the feeding spot that we encountered orangutans passing us on the trail. How delightful that was!
Rini took care of our arrangements, making our reservations for us from Jakarta (CGK) to PKN, then pick up from the airport, drop off at the hotel in Pangkalan Bun, pick up the next morning and drop off at the boat. The same at the end of the tour.
The round-trip airfare from Jakarta to Borneo was about $120 per person. Cheaper on many days.
Even though the purpose of this trip was to see the orangutans, the girls and I thought the most enjoyable part of the entire trip was sitting in the front of the boat and just watching the river and jungle go by.
It was on the boat while going up the river that we were able to spot all sorts of wildlife, including long nose monkeys, macaws, and beautiful birds with every color from the crayon box.
