We had an absolute blast on a tour with André Matos.
André was enthusiastic, eager to help and really helped make this a great experience. Unlike the larger tour groups that run from the beach, André was able to take us into a couple of harder to reach locations because of the small size of the group. He helped us launch and land the kayak a few times in what might have been intimidating scenarios for people lacking experience. It was obvious that he cares as he also helped other people not part of his tour launch from the cave in waves that were a little larger than normal. At one point we were going to go through a small cave on the kayak, but André let us know that it wasn't safe to do that with the weather. It was awesome to see that he balanced fun and safety. André also called us when he arrived in the beach to help inform us where he was. It was nice that he was actively looking for people that booked with him.
We were initially toying with the idea of renting our own kayaks but we are so very happy we booked with André to maximize the fun and adventure on this excursion!

The Benagil caves are spectacular and iconic appearing on almost every tourist brochure about the Algarve. But what a fuss! People hire paddle boards, boats or kayaks to see them. But far easier is simply to swim! From the left hand side of the beach it is about 100 yards to swim into the cave! Despite warnings of currents, I found it an easy swim at high tide that took about 7 minutes. If you can manage four lengths of your local pool you can manage the swim to the caves. Keep to the left so you don’t interfere with the kayaks and boats and ENJOY it! Incidentally, lots of free car parking above the beach which you access by driving down the road to the bottom of the valley and then back up a few yards. It is all clearly marked – but it does get busy!

Stunning beach! Wow! One of the prettiest in the world, with striking rock formations. Highly recommend André Matos Boat Trips to see the caves and beaches. Definitely go early in the morning. The earliest was 8:30 a.m., and I had a private kayak tour because no one else booked that trip! My guide was very skilled at navigating the waves that came from the larger cruise boats towards the end of our two hour excursion. This trip was one of the highlights of my Portugal experience.

WARNING- I swam to the cave with my 10 and 14 year old daughters. It was mid August and the sea was very very cold. So cold it was a painful even. Once we acclimatised in the clear water close to the beach we decided (after seeing people swim it, we could too. ) I
Was concerned for my 10 year old but she was adamant she didn’t want to miss out and would manage. She did her 1 mile badge when she was only 6!) very confident swimmer.
As we were making the decision a young couple with snorkels and fins were also about to swim and said we should do it together as they were strong swimmers and would help if needed. My husband stayed on the beach with all our belongings.
Initially getting to and around the cave was ok, lots of boats coming in and out was concerning me. We stayed nearer the rocks. We were well ahead of the couple, but decided we couldn’t wait for them and continued. I started to worry as we entered the cave. The under current was very strong. I felt nervous and I think I’m a strong swimmer. The girls both looked frightened so to keep calm we swam on our backs and tried to keep our heads above the water. Waves went over my youngest and I tried to keep her very close although struggling myself. We could see the beach in the cave and had no choice but to keep going. The final push was hard work. I was pushing my daughter to shore with all my strength. Once on the beach we collapsed and tried to get warm in the sunlight through the hole in the rock. Around us were lots of tourists happy having just arrived by paddle board and kayak. No one seemed to notice our distress.
Finally the couple we set off with arrived to the cave. The guy was not in a good way at all. He looked terrified. His heart was racing.
There was no way back other than swimming. We were essentially trapped. I knew within about 5 hours the cave would fill up completely. Boats of tourists were coming in and out but not close enough and and there was no way to raise an alarm for help. We were stranded. I refused to make the children swim back and put them in further danger. I witnessed a few people with swimming aids trying to get back out the cave with much difficulty but at least they had floats. After the scare we had I was filled with panic. I looked around for anyone that looked official or a tour guide but couldn’t differentiate between tourists.
Relief finally came when two young English women approached me. They had paddle boarded in and saw me looking desperate for help. They were so kind and let all us travel back on their paddle boards with them even offering the children their life jackets. They also let the guy from the couple on the board too. I have never felt more relieved. I feel terribly guilty for offering the children this swim. I had read everywhere it was doable and no where that it would be dangerous.
I have since done more research and found 3 people drown in the space of a few months in one year alone attempting it. Also a woman was hit by a boats propeller in 2017 and died as she attempted the swim.
I saw nowhere on the beach a sign warning not to swim it. The cave itself is stunning and should absolutely be witnessed, but please go by paddle board or kayak. I don’t want anyone else to experience the fear I felt for my children that day.

We decided to sea kayak from the beach based on a review we read. We booked through André Matos boat trips. We chose the 8:30 start time. Highly recommend to do the early time because the lower parking lot is pretty small but we got a close space when we arrived at 8:15. My wife and I were the only ones on the early tour so $75 for a 1 1/2 tour that included kayaking through caves and photo op inside the Bengali cave was well with it. By 10 am when we returned the low parking lot was full and it was really crowded. There are a few other operators but I really enjoyed not being part of a huge group. The upper parking lot is a long walk so it pays to wake up early. 10/10 the best thing we’ve done in Portugal so far.

Decided the night before to use the last day of our holiday to kayak to Benagil cave from Benagil beach. Searched online for providers but could not find anyone offering a slot for the next morning until I came to experitours. They said they had availability at the 1030 slot I wanted but I saw they used other providers so I made the booking but was a bit doubtful if they would come through. Had the confirmation within minutes. Good communication- 2 emails back and text from provider Andre Matos next morning. Arrived at carpark a bit earlier than the 10 they said. Met rep in carpark wearing AM tee shirt and he gave us paddles vests and waterproof bag and sent us down to beach to meet the other rep. Rep there saw us coming amid the crowd, met us and took us to kayak. Straight on and away before 10 - missed some of the 1030 slot crowds. There were lots of kayakers SUPers and tour boats about. Kayak very stable even when the tour boats created (deliberately?) waves. I have kayaked before - wife had not. No issues. Paddled straight to Benagil cave and landed inside. Then went on as far as Marinha beach and stopped there for a bit. Came back visiting the other caves and beaches with stops and a great paddle through a small tunnel cave in one end and out the other. 2 hours more than enough time to do all this. Brilliant experience, equipment all good and staff very helpful and friendly. No hesitation in recommending. If we had done it earlier we would have done it again.

the beach is so busy that its not nice to stay for longer than it takes to visit the famous cave. We swam to the cave and the water is lovely. the cave impressive. However the boats come right beside you (and there are at least 4 boats at every moment in time IN the cave. diesel fumes surround you when you are swimming towards the cave or back. The peddle boats and kajaks are usually guided by one person but controlled by novice sailors. this creates like the boats a hazard. The beach itself is clean and safe with life guards around who are mainly telling paddle boarders not to come to close to the beach. Getting to the beach is a nightmare. although there are two policemen at the bottom of the hill at the entrance to the beach it is so busy that it is also dangerous with all the people and traffic. There is a small restaurant at walking (climbing) distance. Toilets (which are clean) and one cafe, which is very very busy. There are no other shops around, so you either have to bring your own drinks (plenty of water) or get in line at the cafe at the entrance. the three stars are purely for the police and lifeguards that keep things in order. But not recommended for kids or older people.

This beach is an absolute mob scene. Steep, active, yet manageable roadway going down to the wide, cliff-backed beach, where there are WCs, café, a single shower for the masses, and loads of young people (teens and 20s) booking water sports rentals. Not possible to see the iconic caves from the beach itself.

The beach itself is not as impressive as other beaches in the area. It's crowded and has a hectic feeling to it. A taxi driver told me that during the busy season there are bad traffic jams to get to this beach.
My review is really to share my experience swimming to the cave. My daughter (age 10) and I did it around mid-May. She's a far better swimmer than me; having been on a swim team for 4 years. The water was definitely cold. Probably around 68 degrees. The adrenaline kept us from feeling the cold after we started the swim. The distance itself isn't so long, as other have mentioned. The biggest concern I had was whether waves would slam us against the cliff wall if we got too close. Fortunately, the water was relatively calm that day and the only waves were from occasional tour boats heading toward the cave. We kept a distance of maybe 10-15 feet from the wall the entire time. One thing I'd mention is, after turning the corner of the wall, as we approached the entrance of the cave, it felt like my breaststroke was not moving me forward as quickly as before. I think it may be due to the water converging into a smaller point which causes the water to push back out from the cave entrance. I switched to a freestyle stroke with head above water to make more forward progress. Also be prepared to feel the water get even colder once you're in the shadow of the cave. The cold made my muscles tire faster. When we reached the sand in the cave, we rested for maybe 3 minutes. Prior to starting the swim, I figured I could rest up and hang around the cave before swimming back. It didn't occur to me that being totally soaked my body was getting cold and my muscles stiffening. So after about 3 minutes, we decided to swim back. Not ideal but it seemed the lesser of two evils. The swim back felt easier. We did mostly freestyle it. One peace of mind I had was that if we needed help, we could always call out to the numerous kayaks and boats coming and going from the cave. Super happy to have this memory with my daughter. She loved the experience; probably wasn't worried at all like I was.

Hi All! Our family will be in Portugal this summer with children aged 12, 10, 9 and 7. Do you think it possible to see the Benagil caves by kayak with kids? It seems a much nicer way to experience them but I'm not sure what the water is like for kayaking. All children are elite athletes so I was planning on putting the two oldest boys together and my husband and I each with the younger girls.

Hello traveler. This place it’s a bit crowed it. However you shouldn’t worry about that. The place is big enough. I would go 2 pm since it might be hotter since the water is very cold. About 14 C.
It is fun. Take floaters to make it easy to swim. It is a short swim.
If you want a more reserved beach. You should rent a kayak the have some for rent as you go down the hill toward me the beach. Reserve with time. Then you can go some smaller and more private beaches. It is worth it.
Ciao , si può portare il cane in questa spiagge X vedere queste bellezze di grotte. Grazie x le risposte
