The building was beautiful (and mostly intact), but interior had only a few interesting but miscellaneous pieces as part of a museum collection. The grounds are lovely, but there are no longer formal gardens.

There was, however, a wonderful creperie/resto about half a km down the road past the chateau. Enjoy!

The grounds of the chateau are vast, and inside the walls the history is presented in both French and English. Bring your walking gear (or bike) if you want to tour the area outside the walled chateau. There is a chance to have a coffee at the shop inside the courtyard.

Louis XIII called it one of the most beautiful chateaus in his kingdom. Even though it was ransacked during the French Revolution, you can still see what made him feel this way. The reality is that this once beautiful estate was vandalized and all but destroyed during the Revolution. But, its original beauty is still evident, and that beauty, and the determination of the heir, is what saved it from destruction in the early part of the 20th century.

You start with a good film which traces the history of the estate. From there you follow the numbers through about 30 rooms which have been restored to approximately what they would have looked like in the 18th century.

Most of the information is in French, but there is enough in English to let you understand what you are seeing. We spent about two hours there and could have spent more time if we had made more use of the many interactive displays which do have an English option and are located in most of the rooms.

Look at the carvings on the wooden beams in the chapel.

The have a large collection of furniture, especially Breton beds.

We learned a lot from the hunting displays. Imagine being a land owner and being told you cannot hunt on your own land. That was the case in France before the Revolution.

We went here on a rainy morning, not really expecting a lot but were pleasantly surprised. It is certainly is not the biggest or most impressive castle we have ever visited but the interior is well done - although not original - and the displays are interesting and in French and good English.(Most of the places we've seen here don't bother translating their information.)
I would definitely recommend a visit.

This chateau is definitely worth a visit! Although it isn't huge and a lot of the original furnishings have been destroyed or removed throughout history (as have parts of the chateau) what's there has been carefully restored and is well presented to inform and interest a visitor. We visited with our children (a 7 year old and an 11 year old) and the audio visual displays (in English) kept them interested and brought the chateau to life. It was a good introduction for them to France's history without being too detailed or heavy going. Personally, I would give the hunting exhibition a miss but that's just a question of individual taste. Don't be put off by the negative reviews if you want a fairly small scale introduction to France's history and its chateaux.

You have to see the incredibly enormous rabbit made entirely of rabbit skins! I didn't know whether to be amazed or shocked - you decide. Apart from this, the centre-piece for the hunting galleries, the rest of the Chateau contained much to educate and enlighten the visitor about its tumultuous and varied history. There are audio visual presentations that are worth sitting through to help you understand the history (in French but with English sub-titles)

Getting in is a mission, but once we found the entrance it's a great place to spend time. The setting is beautiful and it's very interesting. Just not sure of the weirdo exhibition (giant white rabbit while funny, the stuffed fox and deer was just creepy). My 4 year old loved the castle and enjoyed exploring it.

We visited on a rainy day with small children and it kept them amused for an hour or so running up and down steps and looking out of arrow holes. Inside there are a few bits of furniture, some audiovisual presentations and some large and slightly creepy modern art installations.

I love visiting churches, cathedrals and country houses. After reading the reviews for this old French Country House we nearly didn't go. The weather was indifferent and it was the day before we came home...we were based close by...so we went anyway. We were prepared to be disappointed...

We arrived to a big, almost empty, car park. We made our way, slowly, up the driveway stopping to inspect the pigeon house. I have seen dove cotes before but not a pigeon house. The children were under the impression this was what we had come to see!

Well, we then walked across the moat, through the outer gate and were warmly welcomed by the people in the shop/ticket office. The Bretons are really friendly people. We then proceeded to the Chateau proper. What a contrast to the reviews we had read! We took a very long time to wander around the many rooms and explore the nooks and crannies and enjoy the several exhibits on display....the furniture...typical of the Brittany region...the Hawks and falcons...the weapons...the kitchen, not not to mention the magnificent chapel.

We then ambled around the outside where the children could run about after being fascinated by the interior. They enjoyed the shop and bought the usual stuff that children like. We bought a T-shirt of a Chevalier(?) I hope my French is correct!! This was for a grandson back home.

We had a great time and very glad we discovered this 'monument historique'. Don't believe everything you read...except this review of course...if you are in Finistere visit the Chateau de Kerjean and see for yourselves...
