Abbey is high in the mountains, road to it its good and in less than one hour you can be on quiet and nice place above Tuscany valley. In the summer there are picnics there, concerts and people getting away from the summer hot weather. Abbey itself it is quiet and there is nice monk pharmacy shop.

Slightly difficult to reach through beautiful forest roads so a very quiet and peaceful abbey to visit. The chapel, abbey and gardens really merit the trip. Interesting herb based products made at the abbey in a very traditional shop.

We really enjoyed our visit to Vallombrosa and we would recommend you to visit. When you visit, take a picknick blancket and food and drinks with you. They is a huge valley where you will find locals having a barbeque and enjoying their free afternoons. It is wonderful to sit there and enjoy your day.

Recently we visited the monastery with a tour group. It is located in a beautiful setting with beautiful artwork. The chapel has some lovely statues and is quite peaceful.

Be sure to stop by the shop on your way out for some homemade candies, chocolate, jams, jellies and alcohol. All reasonably priced.

The 80 something year old father welcomed our bus load of Mennonites, eager to give us an educational tour of the monastery, paintings, rooms, its activities, local connections, musical events and more. Our professional organist was able to present an impromptu 15 or 20 minute concert on the beautiful organ. We closed by singing a special song for the priest.

The visit of this monastery is not easy: predefined schedules of inside visit are only provided in July and August, as for the rest of the year only visits by groups (by previous reservation) are allowed.
So at the "regular" visitors only the chance remains to see the whole of the monastery from the outside; in addition the church (of beautiful baroque architecture) and finally the pharmacy, which sells, along with the products of the monk's work, products coming from outside.
It 'a pity, because the history of this monastery is very interesting in many respects.
It refers, on the origins, the story of Giovanni Gualberto, Florentine noblemen, then monk, who the first time founded here, in the eleventh century, a basic monastery, after having played an important role in the fight against the corrupt clergy of the nearby city of Florence.
The slogans of the movement that he has animated (inspired by the original poverty of Christianity) a few decades later would lead on the pyre many supporters (as they were convicted as heretics); but for a series of circumstances they have yielded to Giovanni the support of the Pope and the permission to found a new branch of the Benedictine monastic order: precisely the "Vallombrosa" branch, of which this will be the leader abbey.
Build in this wooded area, the abbey as a result sees the monks achieve excellence in forestry technics (although a real scientific treatise on this topic will be published only in 1804; the author is the abbot Luigi Fornaini).
Thanks to this tradition, the newly built italian State installed in the abbey the first National Forestry School (in 1866, after the expulsion of the monks). The school then moved to Florence, when, after the Second World War, the abbey was returned to the monks.
The effects of the monks' work, then of the governmental technicians, are visible in the dense forest of fir surrounding the abbey from all sides; forest that - as others reviewers have noted - allows scenic walks around.

We decided to go to Vallombrosa to find out what inspired John Milton to write a passage about this place in his famous poem “Paradise Lost” in 1667. The route to the abbey buildings was very scenic. The woodland reminded me so much about another place – Vitosha Mountain near Sofia in Bulgaria. It may be because of the same sort of trees, greenery or just the sprinkled light coming from the trees.

How this landscape looked nearly five centuries ago we don’t know, but today it is still beautiful and inspiring. Unfortunately, the abbey is not open for public on daily basis and we didn’t see it (as we found out it offers just guided tours on specific days). Yet, the church offers some really good works of art. Before you get in the church have a look at the wooden sculpture – it is a fascinating mixture of figures of humans and of animals.

The shop next to the church is full of things obviously produced by monks such as soaps and cream made by different herbs. I’m very happy with my nice bracelet and my husband with the propolis soap.

The area around the abbey is great for a picnic. It was Sunday when we visited the sight and there were many people, most of them Italians, who enjoyed the sunshine, sitting on the grass and surrounded by the beautiful forest. There are also some restaurants and bars around so a day here can be spent easily even if you are not local but just a visitor.

The enchanting, silent place surrounded by fantastic nature. It's a shame that the abbey, with the exception of the summer months, is open ONLY, upon reservation.
I would improve online communication about opening times to avoid other people, especially with children, from making empty trips.

The abbey is beautiful, and it is best to visit it with a guided tour to understand the many facets of the place that we otherwise would not be able to discover on our own.
