What a discovery, finding a dig in this area. It's been well organised, with good signage for each of the areas.

Really interesting ruins, extensive, with optional guided tour of Porto Rosso. Very hot, but with shady spots. Best to wear hiking shoes

As you will see from other reviews, there's not much to excite the casual visitor, but if you are interested in archaeology you will enjoy visiting this interesting site, even though only the lower part of site is currently open (September 2018). The upper part, that is the Acropolis and the museum are still closed following a wild fire on the hillside a year or so ago.
This means that the visible remains are all Roman, as the Greek part is the Acropolis.

We visited Elea in 2016 and were fascinated by the view from the top of the tower. Also the tower itself is improbable.
Unfortunately this year we found out that a big part of the road upstairs was destroyed by a landslide and the tower and museum are closed for visitors. The rest part is interesting only for real fans of excavations.

We have visited Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Paestum - all of which are MUST SEE places. Sadly Velia is a place to avoid for several reasons. Firstly the site is only partly excavated, the part which is excavated is not being maintained with plants growing all over it. A huge part of the park is closed - apparently due to a fire. There are no sites or parts worth photographing. Some of the excavations are covered by ugly roofs, which makes nice photography impossible. To top it off, the drive from Paestum to Velia is a long winding road and it takes a lot of time to get there. We regret our visit.

Compared to the other similar places within a 50 mile radius, this place leaves a lot to be desired and with the main area apparently closed, there is very little worth the visit.
Honestly, don't bother, go back and see one of the other historical sites, you'll get more out of it a second time than a single trip here.

First of all there are not signs showing the direction or even the existence of this precious site: if you haven't read or heard about it, you're not going to find out about it while on holiday in the area. It's in the town of ASCEA.
In the site there are only a few signs (some of them half burnt...) explaining what you're seeing, but I don't think they're explicatory enough: since I've just been in Malta, I think Heritage Malta has done a great job in places such as the catacombs, putting signs explaining in detail, with drawings, videos, available also on YouTube with links given by QRcodes, the rituals and lifestyles of the people at that time.
Also, only one of the findings in Velia is covered and sort of protected, whereas the thermal baths, which are beautiful, with a mosaic on the floor, are open air...
One more idea from Malta could be useful here: an app which can be downloaded and provides an audio guide to the site.
I know all this is expensive but apparently the site received two European funds... And maybe for the information panels it could be a good idea to ask some universities help from the students, why not?
The site is worth a visit, but my main feeling was disappointment for the state it's left in...

This place feels like it is off the beaten track for the most part. The times I have been here have not been busy and the walk around the site was peaceful and quiet. Plan on spending at least 90 minutes or more to walk around the site and take in all the history. It has excellent signage with detailed explanations of the history that is found at the site. The small museum at the top houses some beautiful aritifacts along more explanations on history. Just below the main tower that you can see from a distance there is a small chapel. The view from the top is beautiful as you look up and down the Italian coast. It is fun to listen to the trains as they pass. Although you cannot go into and up in the tower you are able to walk around it and get a good view from its base. There are parts of the site that are still being explored (excavated) so the site's history is still being explored. At the bottom (the entrance) there is a small gift shop with a very good selection of books, some local foods, and other artifacts. Be sure and pay for the ticket that gets you into the site and museum in Paestum. An excellent site to learn about the history of this part of Italy.

We were all alone the day we wandered around the ruins, imagining what it must have been like to live there 2,000 years ago, marveling at the building skills of those long-ago stone masons, and at the fact that some of their structres, like the Porta Rosa, are still intact.

Being curious, we went to Paestum for the day. Yes very informative, smaller than Pompeii, the archaeology work is also active. It's not much to see, but the ruins of the temples almost complete give a better explanation than the ruins in Pompeii. My wife and I were more interested in the buffalo cheese and the Paestum wine.
