Exiting tour inside a genuine original world war teo submarine. You can get the feeling how tiny and small everything is. Must have been a horrific air when douzins of men under the sea….

I've always wanted to see a U boat close up and this was a real experience. You can imagine what the sailors went through in this confined space. Guaranteed a warm bunk, only 25 for a crew of 55. We enjoyed it, even my wife who doesn't like confined spaces.

A great experience of seeing and feeling what it must have been like on board a German Submarine during World War 2. On after paying for admission at the counter, put a token through the turnstile and you are clear to board U995 from the stern.

Its extremely tight for space inside, the only way through being via a central walkway. You can marvel above, below and all around at the sheer amount of heavy metal pipes, cogs, chains and systems equipment that there is right in front of your eyes. I say that because its all up close and personal on board, such is the limit of space. You can walk through the centre of the boat passing the engine room, control room, crew quarters, and exiting via the bow torpedo room at the other end. Be sure to crouch if you are tall minding your head, and be flexible enough bend down to get through the small bulkhead doors to each section of the boat.

I can imagine during busy periods, the amount of visitors allowed in is restricted, as there is little space to pass others. To move from section to section of the submarine you would need to wait for them to move on themselves before continuing through. Likewise I would not advise entering with a backpack for risk of it getting caught and the fact it limits movement.

Once exiting the U-boat, rather than following the gangway back towards the road, walk around to the other side as this allows you to get closer to it's exterior given the submarine is slightly raised from the ground. Some areas are off limits - you cannot walk along the top of the submarine, go up the ladder into the conning tower, raise the periscope or man the guns ;). This I would imagine is for safety and preservation reasons.

U-995 is well preserved and is one of a kind - being the last remaining submarine of its type left in the world to visit. There is an information board near the the entrance before the submarine, but do not expect lots of information about the type, its career/service history or much about the crew. This can be garnered from the internet in greater volumes than what could ever be provided at this site.

Definitely worth a visit, especially in the low season during the week as there are less visitors around.

The submarine is quite impressive and shows the cramped and challenging conditions. Would have been great to have more information additional to one stand at the entrance.
The cost was 20 euro for a family of 4 and 2euro for the carpark. The minimal charge for the latter entitles one to to 8hrs parking and we did this in less than 45 min! The joys…..

This is one of only two German World War II U-boats left in Germany (the other is in Bremerhaven). It was built in 1943 as a type VIIc/41 U-boat at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. At the end of the war, it was surrendered to the British and transferred to the Norwegian Navy. In 1962, it was transferred back to West Germany and, in 1972, it was restored to its wartime appearance as a museum vessel.

Once you purchase your entry token, you proceed through the turnstile and walk through the submarine at your own pace. Depending on how crowded it is, you may need to move along or allow others to move past you.

It has been well-restored and you can experience what it was like to be in such a cramped space. A somber reminder of the senseless death and destruction caused by fascism.

I don't like cramped and spaces in water, however, if visiting Usedom I would recommend going on this tour of the submarine. I have never been on anything like it, it is extremely fascinating for those interested in the WW's and definitely something I won't forget. It is quite an experience to take the same footsteps as those in the past.
Once you have worked out how to get on board (a strange timed turnstyle) you are effectively left to yourself to explore the submarine. Putting yourself in the shoes of those that operated it is quite traumatic, it is cramped and smells strongly of fuel. The submarine was cool when we were there, however, I can imagine it became very hot with all the machinery on.
The main downside of the tour is that all the signs are in German - so take a translation device along if you need one.

Last of the few wolfpack U boats, just sheer emotion walking through her. Looking at the very small Galley, to the oversized torpedoes, the cramped living quarters, the narrow passageways, just can't imagine living on her. A big car park is about 5/7mins walk away.

A very interesting pieces of naval history, I couldn’t truly imagine being inside this U-Boat for any prolonged period of time as it’s very cramped! The volunteers were friendly and informative, the 1 downside is that all signs are in German (well it is Germany after all!) but luckily my fiancé is German so he translated for me!
