Our birdwatching tour at Ebony Forest was incredible. At Ebony Forest, they are putting countless efforts into the reintroduction of the native flora and fauna of Mauritius.
Our guide was passionate and knowledgeable, which really enabled us to leave the tour with so many learnings. What they're doing here is truly a wonderful project and the view from the top of the birdwatching forest hike is breathtaking.
The Endemic Birdwatching Tour at Ebony Forest can't be recommended enough!

Our birdwatching tour at Ebony Forest left me speechless. The countless efforts that have been put into the reintroduction of the native flora and fauna of Mauritius are absolutely incredible.
We were able to learn so much during this tour because of how knowledgable and passionate our guide was. What they're doing here is truly a wonderful project and the view from the top of the forest hike is breathtaking.
A trip to Ebony Forest alone is worth the visit, however, it's located nearby Charamel Waterfall and the Colored Earth Geopark making it easy to visit the other attractions. Ebony Forest is a MUST when visiting Mauritius!

Great to learn what this conservation area has brought back to Mauritius. Very interesting, beautiful place . The chance to learn and see rare creatures. And of course the renowned ebony trees. We loved learning about the history of these trees.

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour with Aveesh. A big highlight was seeing the flycatcher forest. We also loved seeing the echo parakeet aviary and the pink pigeons. The view at the top is amazing. The drinks are a good reward for the hike. Highly recommmend!!!

Nice walk with pretty views. Lots of indigenous trees, ebony tree, plants. Conservation. 2-3 hours leisurely walk in nature with fresh air. Family outings. There is also a small museum about the plants and trees in the forest and evolution of Mauritius fauna, plants and trees. Also a small souvenir shop and a restaurant.

We travelled from the north east if the island and it took nearly two hours to the trail. It was well signposted and the staff were welcoming and accommodating.
The walk itself is approximately 5.4km if you walk from the bottom to sublime point (There is also a further point if you are interested in walking further). Sublime point offers a great view of Le Morne, there is also a small cafe that offers a welcome snack / cold drink, this is reasonably priced. There is also a nice seating area to relax and enjoy the view.
We met Zean for a short time for the raised walkway, he was a lovely guide and was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. This is an excellent project and well worth the visit - look at the photos as proof. We did see a few endemic birds, like most things this is often down to the time of day and luck, if I were a little closer I would certainly visit again during my holiday. It is a good location to visit the other attractions such as coloured earth.
If you are not that mobile there is a vehicle that can take you up and down, also the museum is good at the bottom. Great visit - thank you team.

We visited Ebony Forest in December 2021. Off the back of visiting the 7 coloured earth at Chamarel.
We arrived not quite knowing what the attraction was about but was very surprised with the outcome although did not leave enough time.
For the ticket price we were able to self tour through a small informative museum which was about the history of Mauritius with a focus on the Ebony deforestation.
This was very informative but very focussed on a lot of reading and the numbering system was difficult to follow at times.
This self tour takes approximately 20 minutes. Allow more time for slow readers.
We then walked up to the raised walk way. The initial part of the walk was very steep (although concrete path underfoot). The walk between the museum and the raised walk way was approximately 20 minutes.
On arriving at the raised walkway we met Dia who guided us on her very first guided tour. Her English was great and her knowledge of the endemic flora and fauna was brilliant. Thank you Dia.
As we weren’t planning to head to the Ebony Forrest we didn’t leave ourselves enough time to complete the walk to the sublime view point.
I would allow a good 3-4 hours for this museum and unguided walk to experience it without rushing.

The trip was superb - our guide was knowledgeable, quick to point out all of the rare local birds that came close to us (including some flycatchers and a beautiful endemic kestrel!) and the views were stunning. It was generally really great to see their efforts in reintroducing the native wildlife and forest.
Well worth a morning hike to avoid the heat of the day!

We got a 4x4 tour and had to wait 20mins.
We only had 2 stops which lasted over an hour.
Though, would definitely recommend Lucy as your tour guide - she was lovely!

Had a lovely hike to the view point with spectacular vows of Le Morne and th ocean
Easy to follow the trail , a bit hard work towards the summit but worth it .

Hello, you can reach Chamarel through Public transport, however from the Seven coloured earth gate, it's 3.5km to our reserve. You do not have any bus on this road.

Hello,
I would like very much to visit the reserve but I have a bad back. I am concerned that travelling in a jeep maybe too much for me if the route is particularly bumpy. As I also have weak joints I could only manage a small climb.
How physically able do you have to be for this trip? Are the roads really bumpy? Are the climbs steep?
Thanks

Hi the road is very steep, a hard climb. It is a tar road so not too bumpy but you have to hold on tight as you will be shaken about. Steps at the beginning, steps during the tree walk, and a walk at the top.
I would like more information on the ebony tree forest restoration project.
Ebonyforestreserve
Chamarel
Hello, Our forest restoration project is a long term project started in 2006 by Mr & Mrs Griffiths, our aim is to restore the native forest over the 50 Ha of the reserve, so far it is 14 Ha that have been restored. By restoring the forest, we have to keep the biodiversity present in the pristine forest of Mauritius. Hence we have been re-introducing the endemic birds of Mauritius namely the Pink pigeon and the Echo parakeet during the past year and the project is still in process. This project takes a really long time and this is why we opened to the public to make them aware of the importance of preserving our native forest, learn more about it and get the funding to continue the restoration work. We are open everyday to the public.

Can anyone please recommend a guide reference and how much to expect by person with jeep tour ?
Singfat_Chu

The ticket includes a jeep tour and a guide for the initial and more flora-rich part of the tour. Then it is self-discovery for the rest of the park. I think it is a good formula.
Non-resident ticket price is about 12/6 Euros per adult / child (3-12 years).

Hello, you can still use the jeeps for the kids, which is included in our ticket price. Our raised walkways are accessible even if not equipped with hiking gears.
