Beautiful scenery, nature at its best. Awesome views.
Best time to visit is morning. Was there this August and started to get crowded in the late morning.

I went there in early spring (early May) which was a low season. The park was not crowded (a plus) but the scenery was a lot less attractive than that in autumn (Sept.) Nevertheless it was good experience. The Moon Bay was perhaps the most scenic spot in the geopark; in autumn it would be much more colorful with autumn leaves but one would have to tolerate the huge crowds and to pay a higher group tour price. There was a shuttle bus service to the big lake. One could walk along the water-side (for 5-10 minutes) and return by the shuttle. From there one could take another shuttle to see the 3 "bays"; the bus would stop at each bay for 10 minutes for visitors to take photos. Although one could stay longer and then board the next shuttle, it would not be advisable even in low season, since a vacant seat could not be guaranteed. 10 minutes would be sufficient, even for a photographer like myself.

Kanas lake is located at the Kanas Nature Reserve in Altay mountain area in northern Xinjiang near Russia border. The alpine lake is famous for its beautiful scenery with dense alpine forests filled with spruce surrounding the lake with snow cap mountain. You could take a cruise or walk along the lake. I prefer to walk on the wooden planks along the lake as you can enjoy the scenery, dazzling turquoise water, the changing foliage from green to yellow in autumn, feel the cold air brushing your face this is paradise on earth. Kanas Lake also have others hiking routes. The most popular hiking route is to hike up to Fish viewing Pavillion where can enjoy a bird-eye's view of the lake, the snow-capped friendship Peak, and nearby grasslands. If you are lucky you may see the monster fish from hill top.Take the sightseeing bus to scenic area enjoy the beautiful scenery of Crouching Dragon Bay, Moon Bay, Yaze Lake and Angel Bay on your out. Mentally be prepared for the long queue, noisy crowd and lots of jostling from the local while waiting for the shuttle bus to bring you in to scenic area.

No wonder some people say that Kanas is the Switzerland of China. The views are simply awesome.
You will need at least 1 full day just to tour this park. Park entrance fee plus shuttle bus transfers within costs 220 RMB per person. Be sure to get there early in the morning as else, you will not be able to catch even just the key attractions.

A must visit place if you travel to Xinjiang! Kanas national park is vast and would take at least 2 days to fully discover this gem. Weather is just nice for trekking in summer, about 20-24 degrees in the day. Trekking up guan yu tai is a must and do spend some time trekking along the river. There is actually a river rafting facility in kanas national park. We only got to know it when we got there but would highly recommend for travellers to try it if you have the time. Although we went during the summer, it was considered an off peak period but already queues were everywhere and it can be quite messy. Do be patient as local tourists can get pushy and 'tailgate'. Would advise travellers to be prepared if you travel during golden period in China as the crowd will get even more crazy.

We spend close to half a day in this national park. We can spend more time in here, but we ran out of time.
The place is pretty, plenty of photo opportunities. Dragonflies, butterflies, flowers, reflections etc. The stillness of the water in the lake is amazing!
Forget about the boat tour. For rmb 120 per person, and Not allowed to stand on the top deck of the boat, I am not sure it is worth it. Better spend this time on something else. Would have loved to do some hiking.

Clear blue skies, snow capped mountains, beautiful river and lake.
Climb up 1068 steps to the viewing platform (观鱼台) to get a bird's eye view.
Worth the long bus journey from Urumuqi there - Scenic.

The park is huge. There are so many places to see if you like the mountain landscape. Better to tour by car than buses.

Hi any idea if one could do Kanas trekking/hiking without a guide or going with a tour? Thanks!

We went there by taking a "Northern Xinjiang" tour package from this travel agent CTC based in Singapore. Since I can't post link, a quick google on keywords I mentioned should get you the information you need.
