Another well frequented sport by China expats, this is a gorgeous and peaceful village in the Yunnan mountains. There are two villages (Upper and Lower) with most people staying at the upper village. Its quite a challenging hike to get here but absolutely worth it

The primary reason for these villages is to act as a camp of sorts for the various hiking trails that are nearby, including Glacier Lake ans Sacred Waterfall. The trails are well signposted and easy to follow. But are extremely difficult.

The village has some charm and character as well as having a couple of restaurants and cafes. It's all basic accommodation but it does the job nicely.

A wonderful, beautiful place that I was privileged to visit. The weather is very changeable here so be prepared

Best hiking trails I’ve seen in China, but development is rapidly increasing traffic while decreasing privacy. Garbage is everywhere on some of the trails, and the ubiquitous sound of construction dominated the daytime soundscape.

Definitely still a good place to stay, if you spend most of your time out and hiking. But it’s gonna go the way of LiJiang Old City (e.g. LiJiang Outside Super Shopping Bazaar) within a few years. Get in while it’s still worth doing so.

Did this as part of a food tour with Lost Plate, and it was amazing. Jeeps are the only way in and we stayed at Yubeng Upper Village. Cloud and snow covered the next morning, we set off on a 16km roundtrip hike with our group to the Sacred Waterfall. It was slightly below 0 but with warm clothes, temperatures weren't a problem. Hike was great and there's also plenty of birds to see along the way. Prayer flags everywhere make for great photo ops! The morning of our departure, we finally saw the sky and the peaks of the surrounding mountains, truly awe-inspiring.

We visited Yubeng Village in June 2021. Our guide offered us a few hiking day trips - one out to the base camp and another to the sacred waterfall, but the weather was not great that day, so we did partial hikes for both. The ride to the village is via 4 wheel drive on a windy (and steep) dirt road. This was definitely part of the adventure and took about 45 minutes from the parking lot.

We arrived in the upper village and did a walk a few miles in along the yak trails. We saw a lot of local animals - and some wild monkeys in the hills! It was a pretty hike. The village has little shops and restaurants if you forget something. From there, we walked down to the lower village where you can pick up the waterfall hike, which is paved and was far less interesting. We walked another mile or so before the rain was too much and turned back. While we did not get great views of the glacier, the walks were still interesting and definitely enjoyed our time there. I should note that there is a lot of construction, so I expect the nature of this village will change in the coming years.

If hiking to/from one of these destinations is your goal, I would recommend an overnight stay in Yubeng. For us, the drive from our hotel, the 4 wheel drive trip and then the hiking was too much to finish in one day.

Stunning snow mountain views and mystetious Tibetan culture create this small but beautiful village at the foot of the sacred Mount Meili. It's quite exhausting to hike a long way on the high altitude above 3000 meters to entering the village, but it is worthy as soon as you see the grand view of the valley and the snow mountain.

As sep/19 it is possible to reach it by car from Xidang

To get there I took a car from the hostel in feilaisi at 08:00 (25 RMB), arrived around 9:30 in Xidang and, after a 5h rough track, entered upper yubeng, where I ate lunch and drank one of the best cappuccinos I ever head at Hey Joe (the first hostel you see/payed 30 RMB each).

Continuing, I walked to Lower Yubeng (another 30 min) where there are less of options to stay (single room 120 rmb/shared room 40 RMB). I was quite happy with that decision because the hotel was nice (with hot shower and WiFi) and the place looked more like a village with cows and donkeys on the street. And they had a restaurant too. Don’t remember the name, though. Just that it is the last but one on the left before arriving at the monastery

During my stay I just visited the sacred waterfall. It’s a 2h one way and 1:30 back. You can go until kilometre 4 by motorcycle.

Get out through ninong. 4h easy track almost downhill. There arriving you see some vans on your right. At first they priced 120 RMB to take me right away to deqin, but after a few refusals they lower it for 50RMB. After 1/2h you arrive in deqin, where there are plenty of buses to Shangri-La

Hint: Leave your heavy luggage at Shangri-la or deqin

Yubeng Village is hard to get to, but the experience is totally worth it.

Day 1.- Getting to Fei Lai Si
From ShangriLa I got a bus to Deqin (approx 4 hrs); and after leaving passengers in Deqin, the bus continued to Fei Lai Si after charging an additional 5 RMB. There is no much to do in Fei Lai Si, but it does have an amazing view of the Meili Mountains (specially at sunrise if you are lucky with the weather).

Day 2.- Hike from Xidang to Upper Yubeng
In the morning I was picked up via a shuttle in my hotel in Fei Lai Si (arranged by hotel), and we went to the Xidang Hot Springs, an approx 40min ride, where the hike to Yubeng starts.
Hiking distance: 12.6km
Elevation gain: 1,113m (~3800m highest point)
Time: 4- 4.5hrs
The hiking path is well maintained and signaled with prayer flags, the first 8k are a tough climb but when reaching the top you are rewarded with an awesome view of the valley. The hike is downhill from there to Upper Yubeng, if you are going to Lower Yubeng its an additional 40 mins downhill.

Day 3.- Hike from Upper Yubeng to Glacier Lake and back
Hiking distance: 12.4km
Elevation gain: 851m (~3900 highest point)
Time: 5.5 - 6.5hrs
I only had time for one full-day hike in Yubeng, so I chose the Glacier Lake one as it seemed more scenic.

Day 4. Hike down from Upper Yubeng to Ninong
Hiking distance: 14.3 km all downhill
Time: 4hrs
There will be several shuttles waiting for hikers in Ninong, the cars start at 150RMB to go to Deqin (the ride is approx 40 min, where you can find a bus back to Shangrila, approx 4hrs and 50rmb)

Weather in Yubeng village was cold (I was there at the end of October), between 0 and 12 degrees.

I really liked yubeng! We slept at feileisi and at 8am we took the minibus to xiding, 1:30 hour later we arrived. From there we walked to yubeng upper village what was quite a heavy hike. It is a 1000m climb and you only go up up up and at some point you think when its gonna end. So better prepare for that. :) near the end there is a nice viewing point and at around 4:30pm we arrived at upper yubeng.

Found a nice guesthouse/hostel in upper yubeng and the owner spoke some english. We stayed there for 2 nights. Good food and view from the room.

The walk to the ice lake is really nice, you can walk where you want, longside the river for example. In Yading that is not possible, there are mostly iron or wooden paved roads. So Yubeng has a more authentic feel.
