Amazing ancient castle! Not that much that remained intact, apart from the walls. Nonetheless very impressive.
Not wheelchair friendly unfortunately.
Quite a climb to the top, but totally worth it!!

Well preserved castle. In a nice location with good view to the sea. You can take a look from the "Kamares" location which is an ancient aqueduct and then go inside the castle from the normal entrance. There is no fee/ticket (it is free to enter) and even if the small gate is closed just push and enter, it is normal open. It is better to visit the castle during evening in summer time due to see a beautiful sunset. Be aware of the friendly goats.

Just north of Karystos is a rusting signpost pointing to Castello Rosso. A steep road leads to a gate, then steps up to the ruins of a small walled village built around 1209 on Byzantine foundations. Not much to see other than a tiny church and the excellent views down to Karystos and the bay.

A nice short stop to see the ruins of a castle north of Karystos. The place was well kept and clean, and appears to have recently been overhauled with a conveniently paved access trail. We had the place to ourselves, which was a nice bonus.

We almost drove away as it looked like the entrance gate was locked. You just need to push the gate open! The view is fantastic but there is no info/ history regarding the castle itself. It's a bit of a let down as at night it gets lit up and it looks fantastic. The place needs some info plaques to bring it alive. Also be aware if you go on a windy day, risk of injury is high!!

The walls are still in reasonably good condition, and there is a good pedestrian path right into the castle. But there is not much promotion of the site - there are no interpretation boards or explanatory literature, and no café or visitor centre. More effort needs to be taken to promote this as a tourist site.

After a steep climb along a path with easy steps, one reaches the former castle which offers nice views in most directions. Unfortunately no information on the castle's history is available. The development of the castle as a tourist site is obviously still under construction.

We have visited many castles and were very much looking forward to checking out the Kokkinokastro, the Red Castle. We were quite disappointed, as we drove for over three hours to get there. There is literally very little to see apart from some barely standing remnants of what once would have been walls and plenty of rocks all over the place. The "castle" is at the very top of a high mountain, which also includes a good number of steps in order to access it. Apart from the view not much else is really worth the effort. As for the view, well you get it while driving there anyway, or you can get that view from any high place. Perhaps I am being a bit too cynical, as I have travelled extensively, and recently I have done a lot of driving around Greece and its mountains. Greece is an absolutely magical place. Its mountains are fantastic and the views are unbelievably beautiful. However the main reason I visited Kokkinokastro was because of some very positive reviews about it. I was disappointed. By the way the place appears to be padlocked, until you push the old iron gate and it just opens just a little. You enter. You go up the steps, to the top. When we were there, we were the only ones there. There was no one else. It was around the middle of the day. There was what appeared to be a ticket office, but it seemed to have been closed for years. Just as well. I would have been mad had I been asked to pay an entry fee. It is also sad that maintenance of the place appeared to have halted. The general financial troubles of the country are obviously having negative effect all over. Perhaps tourism needs more encouragement.

Follow the signs to the village Myloi, standing above Karystos town. The castle is well visible from all sides near Karystos and actually dominates the gulf and the whole area. Historically, it is an important castle built right after the Frankish conquest of central Greece and Constantinople. The notorious, dark, Ravano dale Carceri built it and made it seat (at least initially) of his fiefdom. The history of Ravano and his successors as well as what happened here could be an inspiration for a tv series. Now days, you can leave your car at the gates of the castle and continue on foot straight to the top. The castle has been partially renovated but it is not enough and much money and effort should be given in order to obtain its former splendor but at least you could have an idea from whatever remains. At the top there is a chapel of Prophet Ilias and right below its floor a huge cistern. The view from there, even for the most demanding visitor is really majestic. Please note that pets are allowed and there is no entrance fee but you should close the iron bar doors behind you in order to hinder domestic animals (e.g. goats) to enter in the archeological area. For sure, a visit there is well recommended.
