Lovely place to visit however my fiancée has just received a debt collectors letter due to a parking charge she never received, we didn't even know you had to pay, there is no clear signage and now just read that you have to do this online, so what happens if you don't have your phone or you don't use Internet?
Anyway we won't be coming back there are plenty of areas to visit, we don't mind paying parking either we just don't appreciate debt collectors when we've not even received the notice letter, we will visit other areas and won't be paying these threatening fines.

This is a lovely nature reserve that we have visited on several occasions, particularly through lockdowns. However, we visited in May for the first time this year. We were surprised to find the car park with only a couple of cars in it, it was midweek so we thought nothing of it. I checked the board and there was nothing to say parking was now a payment. There was no machine to put money in. We wandered for just over an hour and enjoyed seeing the bullfinches. Ten days later in the post we received a parking charge from a company called CPM. The charge was for £60 if paid quickly, £100 if not.

On checking the website we saw that there is now a charge which has to be done on line, not all pensioners have smart phones. This makes it ageist. You apparently have to pre register 48 hours prior to visiting. As we were just passing and thought we would call in we were unaware of such conditions. We appealed against the fine which has been rejected. In over 50 years of driving we have never received a parking ticket as we would not intentionally avoid payment. I have written to summer Leys to advise large signs should be erected showing changes and unfortunately we will not be visiting again and have told others about the change in conditions.

The important thing to understand about Summer Leys is that it’s a nature reserve rather than a country park. So it’s not a place to fly a kite, or bring a disposable bbq, or cycle round or…well, you get the idea. If it’s a nature reserve that you’re looking for, with the chance of sighting some very special wildlife, then Summer Leys is definitely worth a visit.

Created from a former gravel quarry, the reserve consists of a large body of water and surrounding land that is carefully and actively managed by the wildlife trust. A path runs all the way round and there are a number of observation hides for birdwatchers.

The reserve is very popular with birdwatchers, amblers and dog walkers. At the time of writing this (January 2022), the wildlife trust, who own the reserve, have introduced parking charges for the carpark. There are plans to site a small visitor centre there, as Summer Leys is one of the most popular reserves in the county and attracts a lot of visitors.

Happened to be in the area after a meal at the Stag’s Head in nearby Doddington. Highly recommend a visit to this great, well-managed nature reserve. Plenty of parking, a 2 mile round walk and several well-maintained hides overlooking the wetland and water.

Nice wetland area with some good paths. We had planned to walk to the pub in Great Doddington - but our route took us there first, so called at summer leys on our way back. There are some lovely views we would have liked to spend longer.

Visited Easter weekend as eased Covid lockdown. A great parkland / reserve with free parking. Easily accessible and well maintained foot paths around the estate. Lots and lots of wildlife.

Family and pet friendly and a great place to visit.

Read the reviews and decided to visit with my partner and 3 year old daughter as this is quite close to home. Parked up which was free (+) and started to walk along a nice pathway (+) to be greeted with an overflowing dog poo bin (-) so we steered clear of that path way. We moved on to be met with 3 separate monumental dog poops(-) just off the pathway which we slalomed our daughter away from. Alarm bells were ringing by now but we soldiered on only to then come across what appeared to be the fly tipping Olympics (-) just off the pathway. At this point I turned to my partner and asked if she would like to call it a day to which she agreed. So we walked the I would guess 200 meters back past the fly tipping, dog poop and the stinky bin back to the car and high tailed outer there. I'm sure its been busier than normal during lockdown hence maybe the overflowing bin and I'm sure there are some lovely views like shown in the pictures online but sadly my family and I shall not be going back to search for them.

I feel very fortunate to be less than 10 minutes' drive away from Summer Leys nature reserve.
Not only is a it a lovely spot for a walk, set in the midst of the beautiful rolling countryside of East Northamptonshire, overlooked by pretty villages perched on low hilltops, with its lake full of picturesque islets, reed beds, and forest edge habitat, but it is also absolutely teeming with wonderful wildlife. I counted 46 species of birds and mammals in the three hours or so that I was there. I could have spent much longer viewing the flotillas of waterfowl or the throngs of small woodland birds that make the feeding station a perpetual spectacle. All of this is very easy to enjoy from any of the the many strategically placed hides.
For a wildlife enthusiast, Summer Leys is genuinely exciting - there was never a dull moment.
I saw several species I had not seen before including great white egret, goldeneye and little grebe and was also lucky enough to see a pair of great crested grebes doing their balletic, beak-fencing, weed-waving, water-walking courtship dance.
This reserve is free to enter. Parking is also free. Footpaths are well maintained although there was a little mud in places.
There are no facilities such as cafes, visitor centre etc. but it would be a great place for a picnic.
Wonderful.
