There are no original buildings and the garden and main building are pretty new (main temple was build in 1989). Did not bother to look any further, but heat and disappointment drove us away...

Nice to walk around taking in the scenery and the beautiful nature walk. But mostly ruins. Not as impressive in stature and condition as the main temple complex chusonji. But pleasant to walk around and relax.

First the only thing original is the garden, all the other buildings are later reconstructions. I strongly recommend going into the treasure house / museum first to see a very good scetch of what this huge temple compound looked like in the 1100's when Hiraizumi was one of the largest cities in Japan, rich beyond belief and the location of the Northern Fujiwara Clan.
If you can accept a mental reconstruction then go as it is a lovely place, stop for a moment to read the short poem, translated into English by the great Japanese poet Basho who visited here 700 years ago, it goes something like,

Visited Motsuji temple & its gardens in october 2014. Very well maintained. Its a UNESCO world heritage centre. The main temple is very well preserved. Also the adjacent garden is a nice place to see the fall colors. The lake & its main attraction( the rock formations) is a sight to watch. but compared to Chusonji temple, its bit small & less attractive. But still on the whole, worth watching.

This garden is nice but there are much better ones. However, it does have one special feature and that is the inlet stream to the lake. It is very nicely landscaped in the Japanese style. Not worth a special trip but if you're in the area you might want to drop by.

Just a second voice to exactly echo the opinions expressed by Seasondtraveller below.
There are essentially no buildings here, so you'll need a good imagination to make much of it. It's not terrible, it's just not the most important thing to see.

There used to be a number of buildings here but very little is left, which is a bit frustrating. The pond is pretty and the park alright, as are the standing temple and shrine, but this place is less interesting than Chuson-ji or Bishamon.
