Rijssens museum revisited
Nov 2019 • Pasangan
Some years ago I visited Rijssens Museum and as I was in the vicinity I decided to renew the acquaintance. The Kasteellaan is a narrow road which brings you to the gate of the estate. Ample parking is available at the road side. Tickets are available at the tourist office counter in the "Brandweer Museum" building. Free entrance with the annual Dutch museum pass. Actually, part of the Rijssens Museum is in the basement of the Brandweer Museum, reviving memories of the jute manufacturing in Rijssen. But the main exhibition is in the manor house opposite. Wander through the rooms and look at the collections. In the attic there is a presentation of washing, drying and ironing clothes through the ages. An interesting hour can be spent in this museum.

One of the best local history museums

The Rijssens museum now includes the the firefight museum, something which is not indicated (well) on the websites. It is located in a castle and one of its annexes. The firefight museum is spread over two floors of the annex building, and shows some old carriages used by the fire brigade. There's also helmets, uniforms, and tools used by the firemen. There are no fire trucks, only old carriages which could still be operated by hand. The ground floor shows items related to the industries in Rijssen, such as the textile industry, and an oven which melted during its first use. In the castle there are many paintings of the surrounding landscape. There is a nice style room, and a room filled with family scenes from about 100 years ago. The attic is really nice with a large collection of ironing bolts and other old household items, mainly for doing the laundry. Traditional clothing is represented as well. Well worth a visit.

Recommended when staying in the vicinity

The "Rijssens Museum" is located in the Manor "De Oosterhof" in Rijssen. The entrance fee must be paid at the counter in the adjacent "Fire Brigade Museum" (See my review). Entrance is free for Dutch annual museum pass holders. Part of the Manor is sub-let to a Rijssen society, but a number of rooms is dedicated to different subjects, the "Van Heel" collection of objects of art, including a collection of silver miniatures, the history of Rijssen, notably a tribute to the famous Dutch writer Belcampo, who spent hit early years in Rijssen and is also buried there. Chilling was the telephone book dated from the '30's of last century, in which all the names of Jewish people, who lived in Rijssen, and did not return after WOII, were overlined in yellow. Furthermore, local costumes from earlier times can be admired and in the huge attic, the tale of washing and ironing in the last centuries is being shown, including a large collection of irons, hand and foot operated sewing machines and a lot more. It is an interesting museum, not to make a detour for, but recommended if staying in the vicinity.
